January 6, 2012

Holy cow it’s already the first Friday of 2012. How the shabooty did that happen?!? We’ve been mulling over what 2011 brought to our lives and realized that it was a year of major highs… and major lows. Was it like that for you? Are you hopeful for a totally different 2012 or more of the same from 2011?

All we can know is that the start of a new year is truly exciting—even though it’s just one more page on the calendar. There’s a sizzle in the air and our hopes are elevated. So, 2012, you better bring it. Happy New Year!

Bird's the Word

The Portlandia writers know that these days, everything bird-themed is all the rage. Though we may be a little bit over the “put a bird on it” zeitgeist, we’ll never give up on our love for quirky shopping experiences—bird-themed items included.

The quaint Queen Anne neighborhood most certainly agrees, especially since welcoming the opening of gift shop Three Birds. Shoppers who trek to the top of the hill on the main drag will find a welcoming, narrow space with exposed ceilings and neutral walls perfect for showcasing shelves stocked with charming merchandise. Unique finds range from reclaimed wood furniture and colorful glassware to scented candles and edgy jewelry by talents like Megan Conklin and Diana Acuesta.

You can show your gratitude by presenting a friend with one of Three Birds' clever cards or a shabby-chic accent for the home, but who says gifts can't be bestowed upon yourself? Give in to some Olivina skincare products, a cozy mug for a steaming cuppa, or a flashy new scarf to ring in the New Year!

  Color Theory

Really great things come out of Denmark—furniture, butter cookies, Hans Christian Andersen, Legos, Viggo Mortensen (rowr!). We think we might like it over there.

But since we’re not planning a trip anytime soon, we’ll stick to shopping Danish—at Blue Willi’s at The Bravern. Founded more than 40 years ago in Ikast, Denmark, Blue Willi’s is known worldwide for their Indigo yarns and using the finest natural fibers to create high-quality, timeless knitwear. In layman’s terms, they make totally cute clothes that can be washed & washed and will still look stylish. Love it. Especially since our lives have become more “wash & wear” than “wear & dry-clean.” Ooh, and did we mention that they carry rubber boots by Ilse Jacobsen? (Wait—we just did!) These boots are so cool—made with all-natural rubber, they’re perfect for Seattle because they’re so insulating and the lace-up design is so fashion-forward.

Thanks to Blue Willi’s, we’re feeling more & more love for Denmark every time we shop. (Bonus—mention Seattle Picks for $20 off your purchase—even at their sale, which starts Jan. 15!)

Take a Break

Now that the holidays are over, we need to take a deep breath, find our Zen, and just flat-out relax. It’s time to take some time for ourselves so we can start the New Year refreshed, and nothing relaxes like sitting down with a nice cup of tea and a good book.

Perennial Tea Room, nestled in Post Alley in Pike Place Market, is the perfect spot to find the necessary products to pamper mind, body and soul. With books, tea cozies, teapots and, of course, tea from around the world, it’s the ultimate indulgence to stop in for a minute and recharge—even though it’s right off busy Post Alley. Ask the staff for a recommendation from their multiple varieties of loose tea, or take them up on the free samples offered in the tea room.

Chill there or brew at home—either way you’ll be so happy to be contemplating tea leaves that you won’t even think about the fact that we don’t have paid vacation days again until July… wait... what?

  Neat Feet

Mark our words—we will never wear those creepy “toe” shoes. But the idea is pretty rad, especially when we think of all the things we do barefoot, but would really rather not be barefoot for. Hello, yoga.

These “Dojo” indoor shoes from Sockwa are just what we need! We wear them for Pilates—they slip on, feel like nothing, and keep our feet clean while we get a good grip. Just pop ’em in the wash later. Cute and genius. No toes about it.

Who Are You?

One of our goals for 2012 is to look inward more, so we can “figure ourselves out.” You know—dissect all those patterns and choices that got us here, and decide if we need to change them. We definitely need a journal, and this romantic beauty is just perfect.

We’re going to make lists, dig up old memories, and plan new courses of action… and it’s all going into this journal. Watch out, 2012!
