  SEATTLE PICKS
life + style to you: every Friday
April 20th, 2007

Savor this moment…your email inbox is about to morph into your new best friend. Don’t know if you’ve heard about Portland Picks—well, you must have, since you’re savvy enough to be on the Seattle Picks list. Anyhoo, Portland Picks brings the best of the city—the newest, the cutest, the hippest, the most fun—and we scoop and share and swap stories and basically let it all hang out for your amusement. We’re shallow, we tell embarrassing stories, and we have no shame.

We are your playthings, it’s true.

So this is our first foray into Seattle. The Northwest is so freakin awesome and there’s so much good stuff that we exploded our britches and now we’re sitting pretty on your emerald soil. Hope you like it. And by all means, send us comments and suggestions because without you, dahlings, we are nothing.

Simply Riveting

Some of our biggest challenges in life: Sewing on the Boy Scout badges. Deciding what to make for dinner. Getting to the gym religiously. And finding the perfect pair of jeans.

The latter has always been the most daunting. There are jeans for every shape and size but ours. Our calves are too big to fit into the pencil jeans—you’ve never seen such a struggle. The low-riders are obscene on us and we’d never be able sit politely. There are some that are like “hello booty!” and others that give us Strongman thighs, those that make our legs look short…it’s rough out there, ferreals.

Then we found Riveted. They only sell jeans, well, practically, and their bevy of stock is beyond what we’ve seen anywhere else. They brought out just the right styles that fit like a dream because they’ve searched the world to bring the best & most innovative denim fashion to their glorious store. With over 3,000 square feet of denim, it's a denim aficiando’s dream. Stop by to see them, and tell them Seattle Picks sent you.

Doggie Digs

Nobody’s dog is cuter than yours, right?  He’s so special—that way he cocks his head when you call his name, the adorable shiver of anticipation he gets as you fill his bowl with food, the way he makes gagging sounds as he chokes for no reason, just as people are leaning down, hands extended to pet him, while exclaiming, “What a cute…ohhh…yeah.” Or maybe that’s just our dog.

Seriously, we took him to the beach the other day (yep, we played Righteous Hooky) and he was being so darn cute and people were noticing him, and then—YAACK—this horrible gag and a pulling back of the jowls to expose his tiny back teeth. We felt so proud.

No matter how cute (or embarrassing) your dog may be, they’re happy to treat him like a rock star for a day at the new Downtown Dog Lounge. The new doggie digs in Capitol Hill have daycare, grooming, training, adventures, lounge services with an espresso bar, and a doggie drop (so you can shop!) They are planning on opening May 1, so bring your pooch and stay a while.

Have Your Cake

We poo-poohed the wrap dress for the longest time, convinced it would make us look fat. Then we went to a luncheon and it seemed everyone wore a wrap dress so we rationalized this fear, and chalked up the wrap as too trendy. At a stylish friend’s urging we relented and tried one on in the privacy of the dressing room and wow, did we look fabulous. We suddenly had a waist…and a figure. It was a magic trick. So we bought three.

And these were most definitely not what everyone else was wearing, they were colorful, Pucci-esque fabrics, knock-out prints created by independent designers that you can’t find at any old department store. If that wasn’t enough, we also stocked up on our favorite Milly dresses...although they were super-mini (to wear over jeans, natch). Where oh where was this mecca of dresses, you ask? At Sway and Cake.  And that’s not all we found. Sandals by Michael Kors, sexy t-shirts, lovely jewelry, and lots of handbags, oh my!

Saunter down to Sway and Cake for all their delectable designs. It will definitely get you in the mood for spring!

No Place Like Home

We just graduated to a grown-up house. Gone are the days of futons and TVs on the floor. Though now comes the task of decorating and collecting real-live grown-up things. We have talented friends that scour the flea markets and find antiques and treasures at estate sales. But when we try it, we can’t see the treasures from the, um, crap.

We need “stuff,” you know? Not cookie-cutter things to waste space, or catalog standards. We don’t want it to look overly “done,” like we tried too hard—we want it magically homey. What to do, what to do?!? Enter Watson Kennedy. Their store looks and feels like a classic home, with all the accroutrements we covet.

From Votivo candles to Pillivuyt Dinnerware, Riedel O wine glasses, vintage silver, French linens and more, they have everything to make a house a home. And you can also stock up on hostess gifts aplenty that will definitely wow. And we’re not the only ones who heart Watson Kennedy, it seems the world does…from Seattle Magazine to domino to Lucky and In Style. These guys are all the rage.

When He Dresses Up But You Can't Take Him Out

Are you sick of his clothes? Are you embarrassed to be seen with him? Does he wear white tube socks with his mandals? Is his wardrobe sometimes such a turn-off that you can't believe you're really together, and if you weren't married it would be a deal-breaker, just the “red flag” you'd need to dump his sorry behind? Well never fear, Oslo’s is here.

Oslo’s is a swanky men's store atop Queen Anne Hill that carries the finest in men's clothing. This is the place to get ready for a Saturday Night date. He can get a haircut, a hot shave, a new shirt...and then meet the parents!

Oslo’s carries a variety of classics as well as trendy fashions. Everything from dress pants and cashmere sweaters to premium denim and luxe tees. And of course you’ll find all the must-have brands like Seven for all Mankind, Theory, Chip and Pepper, Lacoste, Loomstate and much much more. Get him down there, stat, before anyone sees him, egads!

Fabulass, Dahling!

You might be a fabulass or you might have a fabulass, but either way this cheeky new slogan will announce your assets to all whose eye you catch! The latest funky design and self-confident sentiment from Misters and Misses  is, well, fabullass.

Perfect for women of all ages, this slogan suits women who eat, exercise, and take care of themselves (you!) and who love to be recognized for it. Plus, 10% of sales from any fabulass items will go to The Global Fund for Women (www.globalfundforwomen.org).

Bad Hair Day?

Sometimes, okay always, we have a bad hair day. That’s why we’re so excited headbands are all the rage again. And Amy Schwab Designs have knock-out styles that are wide enough to cover your part and keep you out of the salon that much longer.

So now it’s not just the ho-hum ponytail but a Pucci-esque retro inspired headband, or a tasteful black-and-white silk band, or her pink one that looks like a scarf, a la Ali MacGraw. Ooh la la!

Stylings

We have a new favorite designer. Well, new to us, and her name is Julie Chaiken. Her designs are stunning and fit real bodies, real lives, and personal style. We are so in love with her designs, though some work better for us than others (i.e., the mini is not our friend).

Chaiken has a faithful following of sexy, stylish, strong women of all ages, including celebrity devotees like Angelina Jolie, Reese Witherspoon, Brooke Shields, and Oprah Winfrey. And now, you!

Get Off Our Case!

Like handbags, one can never have too many laptop bags, and Melissa Beth designs some of our favorites. We have one in every color. Get Off My Case will totally keep you from falling asleep in your next bored (um, we mean “board”) meeting.

They have a soft velour exterior, genuine leather trim, and uber-cute patterned inside linings. But this case is more than just a pretty face, it is also foam-interlined and Teflon-treated; hence, fashion meets function!

Poof...de-puff

It’s best to look pretty when you cry, to elicit the most sympathy of course, but also so you can remain in public afterward. Instead we blubber, the face turns red and splotchy, and the tears flood out when others just shed them sweetly. Our eyes are swollen long afterward and well into the next day.

If you have any tips on how to cry pretty, let us know. In the meantime, try Depuffing Action Eye Gel from Benefit. It won’t make you cry pretty...but at least the after-effects aren’t so painfully long-lasting.
