life + style to you: every Friday

April 27th, 2007

We just had friends visit for 5 days. It was a whirlwind of food, shopping and booze, and milk thistle might be enough for our livers, but the big recovery will be from our charge cards. We can’t…shop…any…more. Well, at least til maybe mid-May. Of course we can’t name names, but we hit our fave haunts and threw cash around like the Hiltons. But still, our friends put us to shame. They were on a mission, ferreals, and went home with all kinds of indie goodies…cropped pants that tie at the knee, jeans from small L.A. designers, an 80s-looking blouse with asymmetrical buttons up the neck (tres Prince circa 1999), a ladylike cotton wrap dress, plastic hoop earrings in an un-missable Kelly green, and an armload of locally made t-shirts with plenty of rock and roll style. And not a single item is available in their hometown, which makes it all extra awesome.

Just a Wish Away

We’ve always dreamed of having a huge room, or maybe even a whole floor in our house that’s brimming with dresses, all organized in an OCD way by color and length. The room would have a vanity for our perfumes and makeup, organized just so, plus great lighting and a full-length skinny mirror. We’d hang out there, playing dress-up with all our fabulous one of kind frocks.

But til then, we’ll hang at Les Amis in the Fremont area. This French-country girly-girl boutique has a selection of gorgeous dresses, lingerie, tees from Michael Stars and Petit Bateau, stunning pieces from Theory, Nannette Lepore, Trina Turk and more of our faves.

We love to loiter at Les Amis, and inhale the sweet smell of their designer duds...in fact you might see us there, a permanent fixture on their sofa. Or you’ll see us making many a wish at their store fountain, wishing for more money so we can buy all those new dresses that just came in for spring that we so covet.

Hairs the Thing

We can go from feeling like we’re going through an “ugly stage” to feeling completely put together with just a good haircut. We enter the salon looking like crap, having low self-esteem, repulsed by our image in the mirror, staring at how old we look, wishing we would have put makeup on…to, bam!, looking fabulous after the blowout and walking out feeling like Gisele.

But it’s sooo hard to find a stylist you truly love, who caters to your ego, and flatters you just enough to make for an enduring relationship. But we did, finally. We found Cowboy and Angels in the Phinney Ridge neighborhood. (Lyndon was fabulous, fyi!) We left there feeling extremely hair-cocky, and met some friends who remarked how we looked very Jackie-O.

The salon has a cool spa-like and artsy vibe, it’s other-worldly, and all the ‘artists’ are extremely gifted and expertly trained. We are so hooked. We have found our match, and now our hair will live happily ever after.

Making Scents

We like to smell pretty. We swear after a workout we smell like maple syrup, honest (or at least we think so, the dude next to us in our spinning class might think otherwise). But at the same time, we have this terrible insecurity that maybe our pits or breath is stinky and we don’t know it. It’s admittedly crazy, to the point that it’s morphed into personal-space issues. (Don’t get too close!)

So we wear lovely scented lotions and fragrances...but not the icky kind that Aunt Mildred wore that you could still detect weeks after her visit. And not the kind the department store ladies chase you with that ignite our migraines. We want lovely scents that tickle our noses, but in a whisper, a hint, as if we were born that way. Which is why we adore the lotions and perfumes at Essenza.

Essenza is a beautiful store with a European feel, which is reflected in all their products. They also sell yummy cosmetics, hostess gifts, soaps, baby gifts, loungewear, and more...and none of them smell like maple syrup.

 Posh Toes

You’ve always been a hep cat, forever the trendsetter. You had Famolares and Sbiccas and Bare Traps and Candies and Get There’s before anyone else on the playground. All the other girls copycatted everything you had, in an almost creepy Heathers-type way. Well, look out, gal pals, because you’ll be doing it again when you’re kickin’ it in shoes from Posh on Main.

We guarantee you’ll love Posh—they sell luxurious women's shoes created by the world's most exciting designers like Hollywould, Sergio Rossi, Missoni, Tory Burch and Michael Kors. Even if you’ve been locked in a cave and away from Lucky Magazine for the last three years, you will be instantly up-to-the-minute with any purchase from Posh.

They’re not just upscale, they’re completely dedicated to carrying a unique selection of high-end brands and styles not seen elsewhere, except maybe NYC and London. Or LA and SF. Bottom line: you don’t have to hop on a plane to buy fabulous shoes. Just head over to Bellevue and your twinkle toes will be wowing them all yet again.

 Frock On!

We love shopping…but this is no secret. We especially love shopping for A) things that nobody else has, and B) things that nobody else has at snap-em-up prices. We shop, but we also budget. (We’re shoe-sluts and handbag-’hos, but that doesn’t mean we’re totally clueless—for we’re also Earth-minded, socially conscious, and respectful of our bank accounts, meager as they are.)

Which is why we heart Frock. It’s full of freshly feminine local fashion, lots of one-of-a-kind creations, which truly makes it a throwback to the original “dress shop.” Play dress-up in their charming space as you select the perfect item just for you. They sell the works of some of Seattle’s coolest designers (including cute Suzy, Frock’s owner and designer extraordinaire), as well as accessories o’plenty, including jewelry, handbags, shoes, and note cards.

Their well-lit storefront window optimistically showcases adorable spring dresses that we may be wearing with galoshes, but who cares! Support local talent and get noticed in new and nifty duds! Go on now, pay a visit, and tell them Seattle Picks sent you.

 We Must, We Must...

There's a miraculous new product out there from Japan that's supposed to give you bigger boobs. It's gum. Just chew the gum and your breasts start to grow, or so they say. It's like that Willie Wonka gum that turns you into a blueberry, but happily, this stuff blows up your boobs!

And since we believe everything we read, we're going to give it a try and we'll keep you posted. Because even if we just think our boobs have grown, that's something.

Foot Petals

You might say by all accounts that women are crazy when it comes to their shoes. We love high heels, but then we actually have to walk in them, and not trip, or wobble...a daunting task, to say the least. And that’s not even taking into account the pain in our toes and blisters on our heels.

But now there’s relief in the form of foot petals. Pretty, soft little foot petals to cushion your toesies and make the task of walking in those wicked kicks just a little more tolerable.

Don’t Leave Home Without Them

We are so grody’d out by brown, dirty-tinged bar soap in public restrooms that strangers have used before us. Which is why we always carry the Passport Case of on-the-go soap sheets wherever we go.

Germies be gone! Paris, Barcelona, Rome, Puyallup...no matter where your destination takes you, take-along refreshing On-The-Go Soap Sheets to keep you clean. A single wafer-thin sheet will cleanse hands or delicate washables, leaving them lightly scented...without touching soap someone else has touched. Ewww.
