life + style to you:

May 25th, 2007
One of our friends just met a guy at the gym. She says his name was either Matt or Joe—she can’t recall—and he was cute, she thinks. But what really amazed us about her story is that she actually talked to someone at the gym.
We've never talked to anyone at the gym, let alone meet a maybe-cute guy whose name we don't remember. Seriously, we put on our "F-U" faces and think evil thoughts about people who dare to work out next to us. We are crazy like that. In fact, since we put in a home gym, life has truly been much better. Maybe it’s some early social scarring from P.E. class that has left us this way, but we’re okay with our dysfunction. We’ll admit it: we’re not social sweat-ers. |

Trés Chic
We can’t help but get dreamy-eyed about the idea of shopping in Paris. The boutiques there are like none other in the world—the charming owner; beautiful, well-made designs; rows of perfect pieces that complete any outfit; a sense of community that only comes from seeing the same people shopping with you—oh and of course, a shop dog. So, you can imagine our thrill when we found La Rousse.
La Rousse, French for a “female redhead,” pays tribute to owner Amanda Rosenthal’s love of France, and shop dog, Laddie. (Did you know that only 4% of people in the world are redheads?) La Rousse stocks classic, sophisticated and seriously chic pieces from local and worldwide designers like Masha Osoianu, Karen Walker, Mercy, Christopher Deane, organic line Del Forte Denim, Eros, as well as amazing jewelry by Michelle Lenae and Namiko Nakamura.
And, voila! Two more reasons to visit La Rousse—Friday Happy Hours with complimentary “wine-of-the-week,” and the “boys corner” where our significant others can play vids while giving us the nod on our new vêtements.

I Spy...
We like to consider ourselves detectives in the field of shopping. We can sniff out a good pair of shoes, our innate radar zeroes in easily to a new shop, we can bionically scan a store for just that right piece. But it didn’t take a Sherlock Holmes (or, as some argue, a Watson) to find that one special thing at hitchcock...because we lurved everything in this wee Madrona boutique.
Hitchcock does the detective work for you, cultivating the best of the best in handbags from Not Rational, Bahay Bags (our fave), and gorgeous vintage evening bags. Their jewelry covers everything from Haloe to Lulu Frost to a gorgeous selection of vintage pieces and an ever-changing selection of one-of-a-kind inventory.
This little store has big personality, too. Just like the seasons, like our perpetually shifting moods, hitchcock reflects their own mood and season and is currently painted in spring pink, like a candy shop, and you can bet everything is sooo yummy!

Shop. Sip. Ship.
We are serious multi-taskers, especially when we’re driving. Yeah, watch out. We can talk on our cell, text our BFF, apply lipstick, reach way back and feel around for the binky (and put it back in the baby's mouth), all without nary a collision. We are that good. We can listen to all our children speaking all at once and politely acknowledge each of them, albeit not hearing a thing they say. So when we need to ship off a package or two, we head to the very cool Ballard Mail and Dispatch. Shop. Sip. Ship. Voila!
This is practically a vacation. We can get our caffeine fix, check email, shop for one-of-a-kind extraordinary gifts (and enviable accessories for ourselves), have them wrapped in knockout paper and ribbons, and ship them off, all at the same time!
It’s a busy multi-tasker’s dream, all in one stop, meanwhile, still leaving that impeccable impression as if we actually took the time to do it ourselves. (Time? Ha!)

Anything but Basic
Some of us have moved here from varying environs—let’s say, hypothetically, from a New York 5th-floor walk-up apartment, where we green-thumbed our way through little pots of oregano, mint, and catnip for our feline companion. Deer and rabbits weren’t the problems—instead we had crazy mafia squirrels that ate our cherry tomatoes. So gardening in these far more fertile climes is something that we’re still getting accustomed to.
But now that the sun is out we are trying very hard to get our home and garden in ship shape for all that summer entertaining we plan to do. And we’re starting with a blank canvas and very little imagination, which is why a visit to the basic green box in West Seattle is all we need for inspiration.
They have classes where you can learn to make a tabletop fountain and other projects. They have beautiful milk-glass martini glasses to pair with the swinging garden lanterns to totally Martha Stewart your nest. They have candles and linens and planters and oodles of gift ideas. Hello, green acres!

Winos at Heart
We are wine aficionados, or rather, oenophiles (note the big words). We love a good viognier or pinot blanc. We may not be able to pronounce it, but we are perfectly capable of sipping a Chateauneuf du Pape with the best of them. And you should see our "wine cellar"—our fancy wines stacked very fancily in the garage, in the same Costco box we brought them home in.
But we love a good wine, especially the wines of Washington...and we’ll gladly taste them all, just so we can be in the know, and guess what? We can! It’s so easy, and so delightful, at The Tasting Room. There’s no better local and iconic spot in town, with something new to experience every day...today, tomorrow, and the next! Great wines, flights of fancy, and tastings and info from a cheese whiz—oh no, it doesn’t stop.
Drop by the Tasting Room to sample wines from the coolest boutique wineries around. And these are hard-to-find artisan wines, so you can be au courant and fancy....and enjoy every moment of it.

Rainy Days and Mondays…
While some native to the Northwest will tell you they don't use umbrellas, many of us still like to keep our hair from frizzing and our outfits from getting soaked. Fortunately, Seattle's pare*umbrella knows the score, and does their part to keep us both dry and fashionable.
Not content to stick with basic black, these 'brellas come with dots, stripes and lace, all in colors that will brighten any gray day. Ooh, and the mushroom and forest patterns! Lurv!

Get Your Legs On
We are not a big fan of leg warmers for our own grown-up legs, but BabyLegs is another story. BabyLegs, homegrown in Seattle, are so adorable on little ones. They’re perfect for crawling, they protect your little one’s knees when they are learning to walk and take frequent tumbles, and they warm them when they’re out for a stroll.
They’ll surely be all the rage in the park, and can you say “shower gift”? Forget tights—they were so last year—and hit mum up for BabyLegs!

This is Wild
Seattle-based company Wild Bleu has created comfy pajamas, sheets and cases that give you a better good-night sleep. If you have night sweats or hot flashes, in particular, these duds are for you. There’s no sweat, no wet, no smell. Wild Bleu products are made to wick moisture from the skin, drawing it to the fabric where it then evaporates quickly. It’s genius.
Buh-bye, icky night sweats—hello, sleep.

Make a Wish
“A Belief” embodies life, imagination, encouragement for you. Have you seen them? Part of an oh-so chichi hush-hush club. Popping up all over on the necks of Hollywood’s A-list, the ankles of the quietly self-assured, and the feminine wrists of hipsters everywhere.
Call it a pet rock for the stylish crowd, with a bonus: a belief and a wish come true. These white-gold charms are classic, simple and understated. The packaging is as natural and beautiful as the philosophy.
