life + style to you:
every Friday
|
|
 |
July 6th, 2007
We are officially overscheduled. Seriously, it has gotten to the point where we look at our calendars and wince. “It’s all fun stuff,” says our boyfriend, but he doesn’t understand. Every meeting, every phone call, every cocktail with friends is something we have to doooo. And all we want is to sit on the sofa in our PJs, watch Suzanne Somers on home shopping, munch popcorn and snuggle with the dog. (And no, “snuggle with the dog” isn’t slang for something naughty or perverse, though the more we think about it, the more it should be something really truly obscene, don’t you agree?) |

Soho Style
When life gives you lemons, you make lemon drops. When life gives you a man who tucks his jeans into his hiking boots, you take him to Ian.
A fresh update to eclectic Fremont, this urban, contemporary boutique is a little slice of Soho in our backyard. With a spacious interior, warm wood floors, and numerous full-length mirrors, it is the perfect environment for gazing at yourself (we all have a narcissistic side), and shopping, of course.
Ian carries men’s and women’s clothing, specializing in casual looks with a modern edge. Men can choose from preppy-meets-Cali surf with the uber-chic line Trovata, or even deconstructed contemporary pieces from Helmut Lang. Women’s lines range from the resurrected 80’s brand Generra to unrestrained designs from Daryl K and denim by Tsubi. So blunt your bangs and flaunt the colored denim while your honey pegs his jeans…without the hiking boots!

Fashion For Less
Every girl has a super stylish pal. She’s the one who always looks like she’s just stepped out of Lucky magazine—even at the grocery store. We adore the way she combines skinny jeans, a striped strapless dress, and silver flats, finished with string of red beads and matching wristlet. We dream of measuring up, but are rudely awoken by the sound of the coin it would take to revamp our wardrobe.
So when we asked our stylish pal and she told us about Trendy Wendy (her new BFF) in Capitol Hill, we dashed right over to check it out for ourselves. Fittingly located in one of Seattle’s hippest neighborhoods, Trendy Wendy is packed with fashion-forward clothing for every occasion, and surprising very well-priced. Check out the adorned jeans from Miss Me, dresses from Heatherette, and jewelry from Tokidoki.
Owner Lisa Chang told us she gets new merchandise daily—emphasizing the importance of uniqueness in being a trendsetter—and prices it to move quickly. Time to be the fashionista you always dreamed of!

Sipping in Seattle
It's beginning to look a lot like summer in Seattle—finally!—which is making us super-stoked for sitting outside in our oversized sunglasses with a couple of cold, fruity beverages. And we've found one of our newest fave spots for engaging in said hot-weather pastime: Marazul.
The South Lake Union restaurant gives us the best of two worlds with its unique Latin-Asian fusion theme. We totally dig the jerk pork pot-stickers served with guava-plum dipping sauce, paired with a refreshing mango lada (or two or three) made with white rum, mango puree, coconut milk and pineapple juice. Mmmmm! For the adventurous
drinker, we recommend asking for a rum snow cone (you won't find it on the menu). Definitely not your toddler's summer treat!
With an extensive cocktail list, and happy hour food and beverage prices topping out at $5.95, we know this will be a post-work mainstay for us even after the sun has set on our all-too-brief summer.

Tweedy Pie
Ever been in a schmancy store and tried to calculate how long you’d have to eat boxed mac & cheese to afford the dress you were trying on? Well, if you want the dress and some cha-ching left over for Canlis, check out Tweed Boutique.
Established in Greenwood, owner Danielle Luarres caters to the cost-conscious hipsters. You’ll find chic pieces at affordable prices, including well-tailored jackets from Skunk Funk, Ivana Helsinki designs straight outta Finland, and a huge selection of denim with brands like Silver, James Jeans, RVCA, and Wrangler. Plus, you can’t miss her magnificent selection of jewelry and hair accessories. There is plenty of eye candy to tantalize the senses in this store.
This fall, Tweed is moving to a larger space and will add sizes 14-20 to appeal to more voluptuous figures. With her well-edited assortments and range of sizes, it is certainly a fashion destination not to miss (regardless of your mac & cheese diet).

Oh, So Pretty
Ladies and ladies, we wish to inform you, after a high-heeled pink 'tini-fueled quest, we have found it. The fountain of frills. The magenta mecca. The ... you get the drift. The Pretty Parlor! Where lace and lovely, new and old, converge to create the closet of Jayne Mansfield’s dreams and the giddiest shopping experience we’ve had in a long while.
At Pretty’s heart is Parlor dame Anna Lange who lives and breathes local fashion. She floats around the Parlor in a cloud of taffeta and pearls and will primp and paw and send you out feeling like the prettiest kitten on the block. Her boutique is the bubblegum pink epicenter of Seattle design on Capitol Hill, hosting seasonal fashion shows under the Parlor’s giant swinging chandelier.
Pretty Parlor offers original and reworked vintage pieces and originals from local designers, for guys and gals alike, but we are particularly smitten with the lingerie. Glam Garb’s hand-dyed vintage slips scream va va voom. Though Vincent, the Parlor’s cat-in-residence, might be our new favorite accessory.

Embrace Your Alter Ego
We have two personalities. The first is innocent and ladylike. After lots of
mirror practice when we were 14, we're quite good with that Princess
Diana/Grace Kelly demure expression, head tilted down with a kittenish glance.
And then there's our wild side, not clubbing-sans-panties-wild—more like footloose and daring with our accessories. And all of our personalities get a kick out of Alter Ego Jewelry. We love the WTF necklace, super funky earrings, and the awesome “Vintage Bimbo” bracelet with the Barbie doll head!

You Should Have it This Good
When we were born, our parents received gifts like a handmade blanket, and a silver piggy bank. Now gifts are more fabulous, especially at Spoiled Rotten Baby.
Their online luxury and baby gift company features products that moms would love to have, like 100% organic Egyptian-cotton clothing for baby, all-natural products for labor, postpartum, breastfeeding, chenille silk-edged blankets, Bumble Bag diaper bags, and more. Everything is beautifully hand-packaged in signature gift boxes; complete with hand-tied bow, linen-textured tissue, and pretty little gift card. Perfect for giving!

You Glamorous Gal
We’ve always wanted to wear hats. We watched a lot of old movies, and we were inspired by every hot hat-mama from Rosalind Russell in “His Girl Friday” to Faye Dunaway in “Bonnie and Clyde.” And when we found Hats by Tanya, we knew this was our time.
Hats by Tanya’s collection features a couture line of handmade straw and felt hats, with current fashion trends and custom-made pieces. Channel your inner glamour girl, and tell her Seattle Picks sent you!

Act Natural
We are huge proponents of organic farming—it not only improves soil fertility but also safeguards the health of future generations of farming. So while you’re being selective in the foods placed inside your body, consider covering the outside of your body with organics, as well.
Loomstate denim is designed for people who want responsible clothes that look hot, too! Organic and sustainability are the way forward, and Loomstate has made it fashionable. Locally available at Les Amis and Ian.

Beyond Obsession
Perfumes often irritate our skin, so we’ve found happiness in naturally scented oils. Another oddity about us? We love to smell like food. So when we found the vanilla-scented coconut oil from Monoi Tahiti, we were in heaven.
We use it post-shower, add a few drops to a bath, or use it to tamp down frazzled/split ends. It comes in other natural scents, like Ylang Ylang, Sandalwood and Jasmine, and is available with sunscreen. We are literally drenching ourselves in this stuff since we discovered it!

The Sazerac

Sazerac Restaurant, Hotel Monaco
As if the Hotel Monaco wasn’t fabulous enough on its own, they have the added bonus of the adjacent Sazerac Restaurant. We can tell you from experience, they make a fabulous cocktail. One of our favorites is the Sazerac, the traditional cocktail of New Orleans. It’s cheaper (and tastier) than a plane ticket, and after imbibing, you’ll be ready to laissez les bon temps roulez!
The Sazerac
2 oz. Rye Whiskey
1 dash Peychaud Bitters
½ tsp. Herbsaint Liqueur (or Pernod)
Coat a chilled martini glass with Herbsaint and pour out the excess. Add bitters, and drop in a single sugar cube, if desired, and muddle to dissolve. Add whiskey and garnish with a twist of lemon peel.
