life + style to you:

August 24th, 2007
Here’s a sartorial question we never thought we’d have to answer: What does one wear to a rodeo? A girlfriend of ours went on a hot date (no kidding) to a rodeo (again, no kidding), and she had no idea what to wear. We could have advised her on anything from a boat-warming party to a chick-lit book launch to a doggie wedding or lunch with an ex-boyfriend at the grand re-opening of a tiki bar, but she had us stumped at “rodeo.”
We pondered her dilemma. Wranglers are back in style … she could always rustle up a pair of those. Maybe with a tank top? Or a prairie dress and cowboy boots … basically anything that didn’t involve one of those straw cowboy hats would be acceptable. Then we hit on it: Gingham! And she immediately thought, “denim skirt,” and hit the streets to go shopping. Amazingly, she not only found a gingham blouse, but one in a not-so-girly adaptation, and when paired with a dark denim mini and a brown belt worn as an obi, she actually looked totally flippin hot. Cowgirl up, indeed! |

Green is the New Black
Despite our love of city life, we are a hybrid of the City Mouse and the straw-hat wearing Country Mouse. Occasionally, we long for a farm with ten dogs and a big garden, instead of our townhouse with two dogs and a little pot of wilting herbs that keep getting picked over by the birds. Thanks to Urbanweeds, though, it looks like we won't be trading in our Smart Car for a tractor just yet.
The new Fremont garden shop isn't your standard place to pick up a hoe. It caters to the urban dwellers who want a little piece of land to till in their 700 square-foot condo. Urbanweeds can meet city life challenges, with rubber vases for "active households" (or your average Saturday night) and self-watering flowerpots (which could have potentially saved Planty and Planty Jr. from your unpredictable watering habits).
They also have products for those without green thumbs or are new to gardening, and for the crowd that just can't handle the idea of supporting another life form, you can bring home your very own glass slug. No watering required!

Decisions, Decisions!
We grew up on Mercer Island. Yes, it boasts luxury waterfront homes, a Mercedes in (almost) every driveway and excellent schools. But what it never had while we were growing up was good shopping. It was
all about Bellevue Square back then—the mall was the only place to find must-have Esprit tops and
Guess sets!
Thankfully, boutique shopping has come to Mercer Island, and it’s well worth the trip across the
lake. To the delight of the Island’s female population, What To Wear effortlessly blends styles appropriate for teenagers and their mothers, with tees by Michael Stars, jeans by Citizens of Humanity, and colorful, elegant jewelry by Christopher Roca. (Plus, a small gift section in the back of the store features seriously cute baby items and essential Hanky Panky panties.)
It’s a pleasure to see that What To Wear also supports local designers. On our last visit we spotted hobo bags by designer Crystalyn Kae and Suzabelle’s military inspired trench coats. When we heard that they’re bringing in Milly, our decision was made—that’s exactly what we want to wear.

It’s Time for a Road Trip
It’s no secret that Seattle Picks is affiliated with the Rose City. In fact, we started in Portland more than three years ago. So we decided that there are a few events in Portland that are worth sharing with our lovely ladies up north, and among them, the fabulous Pearl District Labor Day Sidewalk Sale.
If you don’t know what’s happening in the Pearl, now’s the time to find out! From Sept. 1-3, you can enjoy a long weekend of shopping, dining, drinking and pampering—and the Pearl’s pedestrian-friendly streets are such a pleasure to stroll…not to mention the 45+ merchants who are participating that weekend with incredible sales!
Save anywhere from 10-75% off items for the home, shoes, sports apparel, jewelry, French dresses, menswear, artwork from Asia, Persian rugs, Adidas Originals…the list goes on! And while you’re visiting the Pearl District Labor Day Sidewalk Sale, be sure to enjoy Art in the Pearl, a Labor Day weekend art festival in the North Park Blocks. For more info about all the fun, click here!

Summer Lovin’
Despite what the weather suggests, it’s still summer! And our need for a sunny patio and a cold glass of Prosecco hasn’t yet retreated into hibernation. Besides, we spend nine months out of the year sitting in dark wine bars, overhearing conversations about varietals while we sulk about damp socks and work our way down the list of local Cabernets, but not in August … August is no time for our “Sideways” ‘tudes—we need fun, easy, yummy, and bright.
So we go to The Local Vine, Belltown’s newest import, where one of the biggest wine lists we’ve seen in Seattle is organized by categories like “statuesque,” “cheerful” and “boisterous,” and speckled with symbols designating “cult favorites” and “female winemakers,” among others. This simple, quirky approach is just what our summer brains need.
Thanks to a high-tech Enomatic Preservation System (the only one in the state) everything is available by the glass, and everything is dee-lish. It also doesn’t hurt that local restaurant darling and owner of Crush, Jason Wilson, designed the big “small bites” menu. Summer lovin, indeed.

Make Your House a Home
It’s more than the furniture or the number of bedrooms that makes a home. We’ve seen enough HGTV to know that the finishing touches are what we need to make our place comfortable, elegant or stylish. We can even turn a studio apartment into a Zen den if we have the right materials!
And week-old Clover House can help us find just the right touches to put the icing on our domicile cake. Just step inside—even the plants in the entryway are inviting—and the rest of the shop is filled with wonderful local and specialty products carefully cultivated for pampering your home. Decorative plates and glassware mix with high-end products like Bella il Jour makeup, Mistral body care, Crystalyn Kae handbags, local jewelry designed by Lauren Schwartz, Paddywax candles, and lovely stationery by local artist Natalie Eden.
This wonderful little gift shop has all the elements we need to nest in style, and Tonia, the store’s owner, has created a unique retail environment that’s as welcoming as we want our house to be.

The Hair Up There
Sometimes things like eyebrow maintenance get pushed to the bottom of our list. So when we made time in our busy schedule to visit Duque Salon and Spa for threading (an ancient hair-removal method), we were excited and a bit nervous.
Our knowledgeable esthetician, Michka, twisted a piece of cotton thread around the hair to be removed, creating a clean line and a beautifully shaped brow (and it was practically pain-free!) We’ll definitely make time to thread again.

Hip Kids Need Hip Threads
Some of our friends have kids who dress hipper than we do. And we always wonder, what can that kid expect when he grows up? How do you top Appaman Japanese racing jackets and polos by Monster Republic? From newborns to toddlers to “little kids”—Blackwagon brings street style to the playground.
And that’s when it clicked. They’ll always be the hippest kid in the sandbox—or at the board meeting—with a fashion head-start like this.

Sustainable Swaddles
Everyone we know has had or is about to have a little bundle of joy, which means relying on a registry or wandering the aisles of toy superstores. No thanks! Lucky for us, the ‘birth’ of a new luxurious lifestyle line called Satsuma helps us give the perfect gift every time.
A swaddling blanket made from 100% bamboo fiber boasts the sustainable label, plus it’s naturally antibacterial and easy to wash. Available in white (no dyes), it’s also super soft, for maximum cuddling.

Drink Your Fashion
We are never without a bottle of water, and we know water. We've tasted them all (and just so you know, Smart Water doesn't make you smart). So far, our favorite is Moda, natural spring water homegrown near the Oregon Coast.
If you're like us, water perpetually in palm, you also know it's a fashion accessory. For the Prada of water, go with Moda, natch.

Dessert of the Week! |

Zeppole
Courtesy of Tavolàta
We've never had that much in common with Homer Simpson, but whenever he says, "Mmmm … doughnuts," we feel like he's connecting with us on a spiritual level. So color us surprised when we visited hip, downtown, Italian eatery Tavolàta only to find doughnuts on the menu! Zeppole—fresh, lemon doughnuts (though they look more like doughnut holes)— is the dessert of choice here, and one melt-in-your-mouth taste was all we needed to know why. As our friend so aptly put it, "I'm going to have dreams about these."
