  SEATTLE PICKS
life + style to you: every Friday
September 7th, 2007

So this is week #21 of Seattle Picks!  A milestone, indeed.  We have a blast putting it together for you each week, and we are so grateful that you read Seattle Picks when there are many other ways to spend your time.  So to show our appreciation, and share the love of some quite amazing local businesses, we want to "give back" when we can.

For example, be sure to read down to the very end of each issue.  If the stars align, we're able to share some really special treats--everything from Seattle Picks-only discounts to gift certificates at local businesses.  Very cool for you, right?  Last week your benefactor was Clover House, the week before it was La Rousse boutique, and this week?  Well, you’ll just have to read on and find out!

Seattle Picks' mission is to support and promote local, independent businesses.  We are so lucky to write about the efforts of people who are following their dreams by opening boutiques and restaurants and bars and donut shops.  We sincerely hope that Seattle Picks inspires you to visit at least one place that's new to you each and every week.

p.s.: Today also marks two more milestones for us—the first issue of www.PhoenixPicks.com, and issue #2 of www.MinneapolisPicks.com!  Be sure to check them out, and please encourage your PHX and MN friends to subscribe.  It’s free, and they’ll get the scoop in their hometowns, just like you do here!

Dance Hall Days

When we were in high school, we strived to rock that vintage-chic look that Molly Ringwald perfected in “Pretty in Pink.”  There were some fashion disasters along the way, but we’re still in awe of women who can transform a thrift-store find into a wardrobe staple.

When we heard there was a new boutique opening up on the eastern slope of Capitol Hill, we high-tailed it over there to check it out.  Owner Cybele Phillips is one of those women who can seamlessly combine vintage style with the latest fashion and her boutique Last Waltz showcases that talent.

Inspired by her southern grandmother’s memories of dance-hall nights, Last Waltz features designers who capture a bygone era while maintaining a modern look.  We were particularly taken by a forties-inspired dress by New York designer CarolAnn Wachter—her line is exclusive to Last Waltz.  Expected in soon is eco-friendly clothing by Portland designer Emily Katz, and recycled leather handbags by Vancouverite Ashley Watson.  Select vintage finds from shoes to jewelry are also a sure bet at this gem of a shop.

What's Old is New Again

Our home is a mish-mash of old and new.  We've got an antique Persian rug in our stainless-steel clad kitchen, and sitting on top of our ultra-mod bookshelf is a 60s-era electric Sunbeam clock.  And we like it that way.  So when we get the urge to upgrade our pad, we're not quite satisfied throwing all in a dumpster and hitting the Crate & Barrel catalog.  We're thankful that the people at the new Koap Home in Kirkland feel our pain, and then take it away.

At Koap, carefully selected (and immaculate) antiques sit next to contemporary art and modern, locally designed furniture like a big group hug between the old and new.  We fell just as hard for a 1920s two-toned coffee table as we did for the chrome sunburst clock hanging above it.

The folks at Koap have an eye for cool that transcends generations.  Koap may be the new kid on the block, but it has an old, hip, soul.

Bella du Jour

We have a love affair with everything French.  From Provence to Paris, we are die-hard Francophiles and firmly believe that French fries go best with ice-cold Champagne.

Imagine our delight when we stepped into Bella’s Boutique.  Newly opened, Bella’s features clothing by St. James, a French company that has been making French women foxy for over 100 years, as well as body care by Crabtree and Evelyn (including their men’s line) and lovely handbags by Latico.  Bella’s is a breath of fresh air in the boutique world.  This family owned shop’s focus is on real clothes for real women.  They stock lines that emphasize style over trends and strive to provide fabulous and funky fashion for women of all ages.

In the far corner of this spacious store is a small men’s area, complete with a flat-screen TV and a private dressing room.  (The Mister has no excuse not to accompany us on our shopping sprees now.)  A garden-inspired section includes a selection of dinnerware by Vietri, perfect for the kitchen table in the rustic French farmhouse of our dreams.  C’est vrai, Bella’s brings a little touch of France to Ballard!  Stop in soon, and tell them Seattle Picks sent you!

Got Milk-Bones?

We love our dogs.  They don't judge our penchant for bad reality TV about rich high-school students.  If we want to eat popcorn for dinner, they're just happy to occasionally reap the benefits of having a kernel thrown their way.  And they're always so excited to see us when we get home.

Fremont's new Petapoluza is just the place to reward the pups that love us unconditionally.  Owned by Amanda Graci and Nick Zouroudis, the shop offers toys, beds and all-natural, holistic foods for your furry friends to enjoy.  Need a place to suds up Fido and Fluffy?  Petapoluza has a self-serve grooming station with everything you need to get your dog's (or kitty's, if you're brave) coat clean and shiny.

Plus, while pets are number one in this furry kingdom, the shop also caters to their people.  Art, greeting cards and customized T-shirts are available.  And if you purchase one of Petapoluza's $3.99 canvas totes, the proceeds go to Ginger's Pet Rescue and Pasado's Safe Haven to help other animals live long, healthy lives.  We give Petapoluza two paws up!

She’s So Inviting to Me

When we were little, we used to "stage" our bedroom dresser by covering it with wrapping paper filched from our mom and arranging our knickknacks in ever-changing formations.  This was, of course, way before we had any real taste or certainly anything of value.

Perhaps all of that decorating explains how we became such junkies for little what-nots to spruce up our abode, whether they be scented candles in fab packages or funky serving dishes and hand towels.  Of course, we love to spruce up our bod, too, and one place to find it all is the new Fresh boutique—they carry everything from fun, affordable tees, tanks and sweaters to handbags and hostess gifts, all in the sweetest little gem of a shop.

We especially love their baby gifts, including hep little leggings sure to make any princess-in-training warm and fashionable.  (Seriously, what's cuter than dressing up baby?).  Ooh, and Fresh's greeting cards and wrapping paper are so fun we don't want to give them away!  We seriously dare you to leave this shop without buying at least one item.

Where Lawn Chairs Get New Lives

When we reminisce about our grandparents, we remember them sitting in folding lawn chairs, enjoying “happy hour.”  Sadly, like our grandparents, those chairs of old are long gone, giving way to the collapsible styles of today.

At least we’re glad to know that the plastic webbing from these relics is living on in the form of durable pouches, wallets and bags created locally by Rosewebs.  Available in super cute, bright colors, these gems are a great way to hang on to a little piece of history.

Kinder, Gentler Gifts

While we’ve sought out vegan-friendly restaurants many times before, we found a new challenge—finding vegan gifts!  Where would we find something handmade, charming and kind to animals?  Why, Never Felt Better by Jen, of course!

This online store has adorable accessories, including pins, pouches and scarves embellished with woodland creatures.  Every item is created with man-made materials—you won't find leather, wool, silk, animal-based glues or other byproducts. Hooray!

Think Outside the Bra

Lift your girls for that perky B.K. (Before Kids) look without a bra!  Created by Seattle-based designer Paige Fortner, PK Fashion’s Cleavage Couture adhesive bra cups are quickly becoming a staple in Hollywood, with Carmen Electra, Courteney Cox-Arquette, Jennifer Garner and Brooke Shields all sporting them (though you’d never notice!)

Fashion Stick Cups (their latest design) and PermaCups (waterproof and work under swimsuits) are quickly replacing uncomfortable strapless bras and unsupportive, stick-to-the-skin bra cups.  These are the undergarment must-have!

Ooh, That New-Car Smell

We often visit thrift stores to check out vintage bags, but leave totally grossed out.  Nine times out of 10, there are wadded up Kleenexes, pen marks and other unidentifiable materials inside, which leaves us entirely uninterested.

Wouldn’t it be nice to find a bag that looks vintage, but hasn’t been used and abused?  Enter Bari J., a site filled with retro-style offerings that are 100% clean and fresh.  You can even choose a chic fabric to design a purse of your very own, guaranteed to be entirely unsullied by the masses.

 Delicious Lips

We have a chapped-lip problem, and therefore we’re always on the hunt for anything that can help us have kissable, smooth lips.  When we were young we loved Lip Smackers (remember the Dr. Pepper flavor?) but we need something more grown up.

There’s a new lip scrub on the block, called, well, The Lip Scrub.  It eliminates dry, flaky skin and leaves lips ridiculously smooth and supple.  It comes in all kinds of yummy flaves, like almond crème, peppermint and brown sugar.  Yum!

Pairing Drinks and Desserts at Purple

Rain on a summer August weekend?  Instead of foiling the weekend by curling up in a ball and drowning in Seattle angst, we decided to hit downtown’s very own Purple for a spontaneous dessert tasting.  With the guidance of the charming and uber-informed Chris Horn, Assistant GM, we embarked on a journey of steadily intensifying flavors with perfected wine pairings.

Round One: the Basil Panna Cotta with Blood Orange Gelee custard paired with Moscato d’Asti.  Absolutely refreshing with the basil infused cream.  Round Two: the Bacon Ginger Cookies with Fleur de Sel paired with the Pineau des Charantes (a marriage of brandy and white wine).  Then, the Knock-Out Punch ... the Syrah Brownie. Mmm....  Just one more perk of life in Seattle.
