September 21st, 2007
This past week we had two "dress-up" events to attend, and we were totally stumped by what to wear. It's not like we don't have access to the best of the best in the Jet City, it's just that A) it's colder than we thought it would be at night, and B) we'll admit it, we're not in this for the money. So we had to raid Ye Olde Closet, and hope that our random outfits are instead considered "eclecticism." That instead of looking like hicks, people think we're "above fashion" since we know so much about it.
At least, that's what we're hoping for. Case in point: We went to a wedding over the weekend, and had a tough time deciding what to wear so we brought two dresses and three pairs of shoes. An hour before the wedding, we realized we needed a camisole under the "main" dress since our new bra was making its debut in a not-so-ladylike way, and that the "secondary" dress didn't go with the boots we brought to wear with it. Lucky for us, we are pack rats as well as fashionistas. We headed out to the trunk of the car, found a white sweater and pair of bronze metallic mary janes, paired them with nude-colored fishnets, and went to the wedding in the secondary dress with heads held high. Our new motto? If we pretend we look good, then darnit, we must look good! |

A Little Understanding Goes a Long Way
It seems like lots of our friends are having babies these days. It great for us—finally we’ll have a social life again. Our friends will understand why we’ve had to cancel plans at the last minute, make emergency exits from restaurants and wandered around
like zombies from sleep deprivation. Most importantly, we can turn our girlfriends on to the coolest kids shops in town.
Our most recent discovery is Mon Petit Shoe. It’s one-stop-shopping for kids of all ages. From shoes to diapers bags to clothing and gift items, this colorful and friendly boutique has it all. On a recent visit we picked up some soft pink leather booties for our little one and a Petunia Picklebottom diaper bag for a friend’s baby shower. A display of kidss galoshes anticipates fall’s puddles and knitted sweaters by local designer Baby by Britta promises to keep kids cozy and warm all winter.
We love the shoe selection here, too. After all, it’s never too early to starting teaching the basics to our little ones: shoes make the woman.

Welcome Home
We can’t help ourselves. At the first sign of fall we begin to feather our nest in preparation for shorter days and added indoor time. Cozy fires, snuggy blankets, hearty meals, and bottles of red wine come to mind, invariably leading to a revamp of our home décor.
That’s why we jumped at the idea of getting design ideas from Veritables décor. Just take a snapshot of the area you’re focusing on and bring it into the store for expert advice! Whether you find owner Marie Harris there or one of her employees, you’ll get fab ideas for ways to spruce up your space, including adding a few pieces that you can purchase from her store. Trust us, you won’t be able to resist.
Among the beautiful furniture, lamps, vases, bowls, pillows and treasures, you’ll find an eclectic mix of styles and prices at Veritables. We especially love the uniqueness of the merchandise—perfect for our style of kamikaze decorating. Ah home… it’s where the heart is, after all.

My Buddy
When we were single digits, we derived happiness from the simplest things: the laminated Tom Selleck poster on our bedroom wall, that My Buddy doll commercial with its hip-happy theme song ("My Buddy, My Buddy, Everywhere I go, He-e-e-e goes"), Sloppy Joes and tater tots day in the cafeteria. So it's really no wonder that new Ballard eatery Zayda Buddy's could develop into one of our faves.
With both tots and Sloppy Joes on the menu (there's even a tater tot casserole), a little cartoon man on the menu who looks like he could indeed be the grown-up My Buddy doll, and a poster of, yes, Tom "Magnum P.I." Selleck in the women's bathroom, Zayda Buddy's Pizza had us at "hello." (And who's featured in the men's room? Why it's Farrah "My Bangs Really Can Fly" Fawcett.)
The restaurant isn’t all about kid stuff, however. There’s a separate bar area for the over-21 crowd looking to catch the game on TV or just catch up with each other on the cozy stools, over some delish pizza.

Fall is in Bloom
The days are getting shorter, the air a little crisper, and leaves are starting to fall. Autumn is drawing near, which means we are a wee bit closer to winter! But who says flowers don’t bloom in the fall?
Follow the scent of fresh flowers and you’ll find tulip, a hip downtown boutique with contemporary ready-to-wear and accessory lines. The minute you walk in, you’ll be charmed by the ambience, with calming floral fragrances from fresh flowers decorating the walls and a friendly sales staff giving you personal space to peruse the gorgeous merchandise. Annie Sparrow, owner and buyer, seeks out the latest and greatest new designers from New York to Paris. You’ll find feminine dresses, chic jackets, and fitted blouses from lines such as Vena Cava, Loeffler Randall, Paul and Joe, Nicholas K., Hanii Y and Lauren Moffatt. Also, find the best in denim from William Rast or sweet camisole/panty sets from Underglam. All pieces have feminine flair with timeless versatility.
You might pout about the thought of 30 consecutive days of drizzle, but all flowers need water. Just like all fashionistas need a change of season to keep them thirsty for new trends.

Cheers!
We had one of those nights last week when "a quick drink" turned into three or four, and "an early night" turned into a 9:30 dinner and some serious conversation. Needless to say, this has happened before, and we've found in these situations it's best to be 1) somewhere friendly and bustling, in case things get, um, animated; and 2) a short walk from home.
True to form, we found ourselves at our neighborhood's newest restaurant/bar, Betty, with their signature Sparkling Ginger Lemonade (ginger-infused vodka, lemonade and sparkling water) in hand, surrounded by chatty friends and neighbors. Luckily for us, Betty is the younger, cozier sister of another Queen Anne culinary staple, Crow, and food and drink alike are simple but fantastic. We watched from the bar as the kitchen prepared our perfectly pan-roasted chicken, and then we moved into a secluded booth for a nightcap.
A perfect neighborhood hangout with a killer staff and chic touch, Betty is our new favorite place to accidentally spend an evening.

Safety First
Seattle is a hotbed of scooter-riders. We love them. We feel like big-city girls when we see them cruising by on their way to work, a date or coming home from the market. So we were excited to hear about a new line of brightly colored reflective vests to help two-wheeled drivers ride safely.
Water resistant, little pockets for valuables and a fit that slides over your cute outfit and a jacket. Genius!

Handbags with a Conscience
There was a time when we thought about joining the Peace Corps, but we’re too urban to give up things like stilettos and showers. Instead, we leave it to people like Helen Hoppock, who managed to help others then and help us now, by providing super chic handbags stateside.
Each Helena de Natalio creation is shaped by her time in Paraguay, Argentina and, um, Seattle, with textiles that capture the warmth of South America. Wherever we travel next, we’re taking one of these sumptuous totes along!

Sugar, Sugar
We have such a sweet tooth. From candy to cupcakes, we just can't get enough of the sugary stuff, which might explain why we're such suckers for Sweet Nina's body polish. The yummy-for-our-dry-skin sugar scrub contains sweet almond and apricot kernel oils along with Vitamin A, reconditioning minerals, and honey to give us smooth, glowing skin.
The sweet stuff comes in three delicious-smelling flavors: ginger grapefruit, lavender honey and rosemary mint. So no matter what we're craving, this scrub is a treat to our senses.

Take Credit for Your Vino
When we meet people’s parents for the first time, we always aim to impress, typically bringing a nice cabernet along—always with an eye-catching label.
In the past, we’ve had to hide our snazzy pick in a bag, which doesn’t help us stand out. Fortunately, we’ve got a new solution: Wine-O cards, specially designed to fit around the neck of your bottle, so credit goes where it’s due. Whether you like dots, swirls or stripes, in this case, one size really does fit all.

Genie in a Bottle
We are constantly trying anti-aging products, with little success. So when we found Arbonne International, a company with 27 years of proven results, we were intrigued. We booked a party and invited our friends.
We tried baby care, men’s skincare, makeup and skincare for teens and women, plus aromatherapy, multivitamins, and weight loss products. Call Jana at 425.283.9167 to book your own party and get great hostess gifts! ps: This is a fab opportunity if you’re looking to own your own business or supplement an income!

Vim, Vigor and Vodka at Venik
We love how Russians drink vodka while taking their "constitutionals," and when we heard about Venik, the newly opened bar at Banya 5, we made a bee-line down there to check it out. We’re big fans of a hot soak and cold plunge and were dying to try the bar’s infused vodkas. And oh baby, what a treat. Our favorite was the organic cantaloupe vodka paired with a prosciutto nibble. Perfection. Served ice-cold in a martini glass, believe us, where this drink is served is where you want to be.
