life + style to you: every Friday
January 4th, 2008

Our New Year’s resolution is all about cleaning out our closets—both literal and metaphorical.  Donate all those sweaters that are actually midriff-baring tops (we have a freakishly long torso), get rid of at least two of our seven pairs of black pants (namely the ones that don’t fit), start doing yoga again, hit the gym, eat more fruits and veggies, practice our forgotten French—you get the idea.  Ah, but we figured we would share the love with you guys and clean out Seattle Picks’ figurative closet by paring it down.

Don’t fret.  We’ll still be combing the city for the best and brightest in hip, independent shopping experiences.  But we’re going to give it up in a more condensed package for your reading pleasure.  Think of it as indulging in a decadent, deliciously rich piece of dark chocolate to satisfy your sweet tooth instead of eating an entire slab of German chocolate cake that’s just going to make you feel like you’re going to yack later.  Bon appetit, lovelies!

It’s Easy Being Green

As much as we loved that green frog and his sassy lady friend, Kermit was wrong when he sang “It’s Not Easy Being Green.”  With all the new products and local shops popping up, being green is not only easy, it’s fun and fashionable.  Even bigwigs like NBC are jumping on the bandwagon with their “Green Week.”  If NBC can do it, so can we.

That’s why we love Goods for the Planet.  This newcomer to Dexter Avenue features all you could want—from cleaning supplies to gorgeous gifts—from the finest, earth-friendly vendors.  In our pursuit to shop green, we couldn’t get enough of the recycled glass dishware and the fabric-scrap baby shoes. Plus, they carry a great collection of recycled cards and hemp gift wrap—because what’s the point of shopping green if you aren’t going to wrap it up right?

We spent over an hour at Goods for the Planet pondering the many uses of recycled chopsticks (chic placemats!) and old maps (unique stationery!).  And when we finally left we felt great about our purchases and about ourselves for making the world that much greener.  Sorry, Kermie.

Work It Out

We're trying something new this year: one-word resolutions. Topping our list is “yoga.”  Since we've found that it's always easier to stick with a new activity when we've got the right accessories, we were happy to discover Yogalife—a one-stop shop for yoga classes and gear.

Both locations (Queen Anne and Greenlake) offer classes seven days a week as well as special workshops and retreats, so you're sure to find something that fits your schedule.  Need the right gear?  Yogalife has got you covered there too—with cute and comfy clothing by Buddhaful, Prana, Om Girl and more, as well as basic equipment (mats, blocks, etc) and stylish bags to carry it all.  Best of all, Yogalife strives to carry products that are organic and green—two of our favorite words (other than “sale” and “free,” of course)!

Start your 2008 with a trip to Yogalife—you'll be well on your way to a fit, flexible and fabulously outfitted new you.  And by all means, tell them Seattle Picks sent you!

Freezer Food Without The Burn

We’re very into supporting all that is local here in Seattle—especially the food.  When a new restaurant opens, we’re there.  We tote a basket to our neighborhood farmers market every weekend.  In a perfect world, this cuisine would not only be good for us but good for the earth.  Even with the best intentions, life can get in the way and make us forfeit our local ambitions for convenience.

Perched atop Queen Anne Avenue, Eat Local is the perfect solution to our inner struggle.  Part freezer aisle, coffee shop and art gallery, Eat Local is truly a unique offering.  Sourcing all ingredients from a 200-square-mile radius, all of Eat Local’s food is organic with minimal carbon footprint from farm to table.  The end result is gourmet frozen dishes, from soups and sides to full entrees and desserts.  Pick up appetizers for your next party; they’ll never know those apple canapés were once frozen.  Eat Local even produces baby food!

Amidst our busy Seattleite lifestyle, Eat Local satisfies our desires for fabulous local fare.  Our freezers will never be the same.

The Shirt Off Our Backs

We live in T-shirts, but we’re over the whole faux-vintage tees with lame-ass sayings thing.  You know, like the one with the piñata that says, “I’d hit that.”  Or the one with little Michelle Tanner on it saying, “You got it, dude!”

Park Life knows what’s up, though, selling contemporary art in the form of T-shirts (along with righteous photography and trippy homewares).  Our new fave T is super-soft and whale-emblazoned, designed and hand-printed in the artist’s Brooklyn aparment.  Feel the indie love.

With this Ring

Picking out wedding jewelry can be taxing. You already have a pretty sweet piece of jewelry on your left ring finger; and when you get to the end of that aisle, your significant other is going to probably give you another. So what about adorning the rest of you?

We think we’ve found a good fix in Saori C. Jewelry Designs’ wedding and bridal jewelry. Ranging from romantic and elegant to delicate and unique, we think you’ll definitely find something to help you shine. We love this white pearl necklace appropriately called “First Love.” Awww…

A Hummingbird’s Heart

Our guy pals reveal an interesting point; according to them, nothing is sexier than a woman in jeans, a T-shirt and no makeup.  We think a tee by Spraygraphic fits their bill.  So send some love to your local designers and artists by visiting this online store.

And when you have to sneak out to your local supermarket for a loaf of bread and onion, the karma of this tee is sure to bring a saucy conversation with the bohunk buying cat food in aisle #2.

  Cocktail of the Week!

Visions of Sugarplums
Courtesy of The Local Vine

We know it’s January, but we’ve still got the holiday bug. Thankfully, The Local Vine is still feeling festive too with a timely cocktail, and donating 25 percent of the drink’s proceeds to the Moyer Foundation.  We jumped at the chance to make stopping for a Visions of Sugarplums and the truffle popcorn a priority. You can still enjoy some holiday cheer through the end of the month.

Visions of Sugarplums
1 Tsp. Special Syrup (see below)
4 oz. of your favorite bubbly

To make the syrup:
1 c. sugar
2 c. vinegar
1lb. bag cranberries
1/2 c. cloves
1/2 c. juniper berries

In a saucepan, caramelize sugar over low heat.  Add vinegar and the rest of the ingredients through juniper berries.  Remove from heat and let steep for 30 minutes.  Strain out berries and cloves. Makes about two cups of syrup; save remaining syrup in the refrigerator.

Have a Ball

We read “Eat, Pray, Love” over the holidays, and it’s given us a mad craving for everything Italian.  Seattle-based non-profit Crooked Trails is throwing an authentic Venetian carnival ball, giving us a reason to get all gussied up, indulge in Italian apps and support an amazing cause.  Proceeds will help the organization build a school in rural Peru.  Not bad for one night!
