January 11th, 2008
Still filled with the wide-eyed enthusiasm of the New Year, we’ve started yoga again. And what’s the best way to get jazzed about reconnecting with our yogic self? Getting all geared up of course. So before even stepping foot back onto our mat for the first time in—well, we can’t remember how long—we went shopping. First, we absolutely had to have a great pair of yoga pants. If our butt’s going to be all up in the air downward dogging it, we want it to look good up there. And our yoga pants have a maroon band around the top, so we had to get a maroon yoga top to go with them. Oh, and our maroon yoga top has a salmon-colored lining, and there just so happens to be a maroon hoodie that happens to have—you guessed it—a salmon-colored stripe on the arm!
So there we were sitting in our beginner yoga class looking at ourselves sitting on the mat in the mirror, when it hit us: We looked like Yoga Barbie. But not as blonde, tall or busty, so we would have probably been Yoga Barbie’s cousin, Yoga Janet, who comes with cool accessories like a flowered water bottle to sit next to her on her pink flowered yoga mat. Yoga Janet’s tagline? "Everyone has their own path to enlightenment; hers just happens to be color-coordinated."
Heads up lovers, the first-ever Seattle Picks Valentine’s Day Gift Guide comes out Feb. 1! Wonder if we can find a yoga mat with hearts on it for the occasion … |

Fruit of the Olivine
Sigh. The holiday shopping season is over. Luckily, we have the January sale season to look forward to—when our favorite stores clean house before spring fashions hit the market. Our pockets stuffed with Christmas gift certificates and cash from distant relatives, we hit the town to do some real shopping—for ourselves.
Our first stop? The biannual sale at Olivine in Ballard. This oh-so-French boutique boasts a wonderfully unique collection of all things girly. With their wide selection, we can pamper ourselves from the ground up and start the New Year fresh. We start with sustainable shoes by Form and Fauna under our favorite AG Jeans. Top it off with a Laurie B. sweater and an Ashley Wilson leather bag slung over our shoulder and we’re set. And once we have the outfit down, we can pamper ourselves with a facial or eyebrow wax in their beauty lounge or go for a whole new look at the beauty counter, conveniently staffed by a makeup artist every day.
We survived another holiday season, ladies, and we deserve a little retail therapy in the greatest sense of the phrase. Thanks, Olivine!

Pie Oh My
We watch cooking shows religiously. But when it comes time to actually getting to work in the kitchen, we get a little nervous. What’s the difference between a pinch, a dash and a smidge anyway?
That’s why when asked to bring dessert to a recent potluck, we ran directly to The Sugar Shack Baking Company. With everything made from scratch, all of their cookies, scones and cupcakes taste like they came from Granny’s kitchen. Plus, they help all of us not-so-kitchen-savvy ladies commit the perfect crime. Bring in your own pie pan, and the lovely bakers at the Sugar Shack will make you a homemade treat.
So if the thought of baking a pie from scratch seems a little overwhelming or you just don’t have the time, get yourself over to The Sugar Shack Baking Company. It will be our little secret.

A Boutique with a Brain
We’re into eating locally produced foods, and we’d love to convert our car to biodiesel. After the recent recalls, we make sure we know all about the toys we buy for the baby, and we’re sticklers for recycling. It just stands to reason that we’d make conscious decisions about the clothes we wear.
And Lisa over at Juniper has done our homework for us, carrying a beautiful collection of chic yet wearable clothing, jewelry and bags from designers who care about the impact they make on the world. Tucked down a side street in Madrona, Juniper is a perfect blend of minimalism and luxury. Slip into a handmade silk charmeuse top by Brooklyn-based Sir clothing, revel in the softness of a cashmere sweater by Portland’s Souchi, and snap up a handbag in a custom designed fabric by Dominique Pecquier to capture the effortless style of a Parisian woman.
Plus you’ll find exotic Indian rugs by Matta, fetching embroidered pillows by K Studio and colorful resin bowls from Dinosaur Design. Stop by and shop freely; there’s big sale going on now!

Be Still My Heart
We love websites that convey a sense of lifestyle—making us wish we lived inside the confines of the virtual store without ever having set foot inside the brick and mortar one. Flutter, a Portland-based shop, has just launched a website that does exactly that.
We’ve already snatched up the Jasmine Brown Sugar eau de Parfum from Voluspa and yearn for the dramatic jewelry from Relic. We can only imagine what we might covet should we cross their threshold!

It’s All About Art
Ever fantasize about quitting your day job and doing what you really love? We do. And artist Jason Waskey has actually done it. After years of software design, Jason now paints incredible little paintings almost every day and sells them for only $100.
Jason’s paintings are sweet little moments from life, perfect for our mantel or kitchen wall. He makes owning an original piece of art easy. And we love him for it.

Age is Just a Number
The other day we spotted a few new gray hairs along with some wrinkles around our mouth. We’re accepting the facts—we’re getting old.
But with the help of 29, we don’t have to look it. An age-protecting color cosmetic line, 29 utilizes the benefits of grapeseed extracts, known for protecting skin against free-radicals and pollutants. With exquisite colors, tons of antioxidants and a name inspired by the highway that runs through Napa Valley, we’re ready to drink this stuff up.

Amber Nudge
Courtesy of Mona’s Bistro & Lounge
Catching up with a girlfriend as we walk around Green Lake has become our new preferred form of exercise. And to reward ourselves for hard work, we grab a body-warming cocktail when we’re done. Just a few blocks from the lake, Mona’s Lounge & Bistro offers a cozy atmosphere and our new favorite drink—the Amber Nudge. Smooth and nutty with a dollop of liquor-infused whipped cream, this concoction makes us want to sprint around the lake twice—or maybe just have another drink.
The Amber Nudge
1 oz. Macallan Amber Liqueur
¾ oz. Grand Marnier
¾ oz. Kahlua
Coffee
Whipped cream (mixed with some of the Macallan Amber Liqueur for an extra kick)
Combine Macallan Amber Liqueur, Grand Marnier and Kahlua in an 8-ounce coffee mug. Top with brewed coffee to fill the cup. Add a dollop of the whipped cream and serve.

Do You Feel Lucky?
Due to a lack of depth perception and general clumsiness, we aren’t the most athletic of dames. One sport that we’ve managed without doing serious harm to ourselves is bowling, and the new Lucky Strikes Lanes in Bellevue is the most snazzy place we’ve found to perfect our form.
What: Lucky Strike Lanes now open
