February 29th, 2008
There was something about watching the Oscars last weekend that took us back to high school. OK, so obviously, you have all the popular kids (i.e., the stars) walking down the school halls (i.e., the red carpet) dressed in their super-fancy designer duds. And there are the kids on the fringe—the red-carpet interviewers and hosts—who gossip about the popular kids’ clothes once they’ve walked by. Then there's the class clown—Jon Stewart—making fun of all the popular kids and hoping they won’t kick his ass after school. And of course we can’t forget about the band/drama/math-team geeks (i.e., the writers, costume designers, special-effects nominees). None of the "popular kids" really seem to care about who the "geeks" are thanking up there, much less who they are, and the music always cuts them off before they’ve had a chance to say much of anything.
And then there’s us, having a throwback to our own high-school experience—sitting at home alone in our pajamas by 7 pm, eating popcorn and Ben and Jerry’s, listening to Springsteen's "Glory Days" and getting misty. Ah, memories. |

Betty Bump
The first of our friends has been sperminated—thank you Perez Hilton for that wonderful terminology. And let us tell you, she is pregnant with a capital P. Due in less than a month now, the mommy-to-be complains of strange cravings, her slow-moving duck waddle and swollen feet that she barely sees anymore. But her biggest grumble concerns her overall frumpiness, particularly when it comes to her clothing choices.
So we grabbed her hand and waddled right over to Bump on Roosevelt Way. With a tag line like “embrace the bump without the frump,” we knew we would find something for that belly of hers. And boy did we score. With brands like Momzee, Lait and Maternal America, they have beautiful choices that could make the most unpregnant of women jealous. We certainly were. Plus they have stylish accessories, from inconspicuous diaper bags to delicate necklaces with baby’s birthstone.
And when we were done at Bump, we wandered into Pop Tots to do a little shopping for when the baby arrives. This sister-store (attached at the back) sells funky kids clothes and great decorations for the nursery, so that baby won't feel frumpy either.

No Need to Trade Spaces
We have a girlfriend who recently bought a new house and transformed it to reflect her fabulous French-country self. The colors are warm and the details are chic. We can’t imagine how this put-together look is possible without an interior designer or an entire crew from HGTV.
To our delight, our friend filled us in on her little secret—Patina Collections in Bellevue! We headed there right away. Tucked away on Main Street, Patina is the place to find furniture and accessories in European style. Most of the furniture is high-end and antique consignment, which means these are unique pieces that no one else will have. The rest of the items are new and just as fabulous! We love their eclectic assortment of art, lamps and kitchen details, and the combination of elegant and rustic is inspiring. Patina also has in-store and home services, a design club and classes; we’ll be décor divas in no time.
We do have a word of advice when it comes to Patina, since pieces are often one-of-a-kind: Visit often. You never know what treasure you will find!

Liquid Breakfast
We’ve always loved brunch. As kids we loved the buffet, which allowed us to eat dessert first and enjoy as many made-to-order omelets as we could hold. Nowadays, we love the joy of cocktails before noon: Mimosas, Bellinis, Bloody Marys. So imagine our delight when we learned that Queen Anne’s Moxie is now serving brunch, along with all our favorite drinks.
The menu features classics with local flair, including eggs benedict on crumpets from the Crumpet Shop and French toast made from Columbia City Bakery’s brioche. Our fave was the chilaquiles—a unique and delish dish of corn tortillas, beans, chicken, fried egg and salsa verde. More importantly, the Bloody Moxie (their take on a Bloody Mary) and the Prosecco Bellini were divine.
This weekend, get yourself over to Moxie to enjoy your own grown-up brunch. And of course, don’t forget to tell them who sent you!

Bake On, Fair Maidens
V-day is over, but that doesn’t mean that we’re done with sweets (and pink and red, for that matter). While cruising the ’net, we found the very cutest cooking project and just had to share its adorable-ness. Or adorability. Whatever.
Anyhoo, these sweet cake pops are delectable, both visually and otherwise, and are a snap to make. Not only do they look like Dum Dums, they require very little brainpower!

Bat for Lashes
Mascara is our religion. It's stashed in all of our handbags and toted on trips. Even camping. Because, guess what? Our eyelashes are more redheaded stepchild than pretty and bare in their natural state. We know mascara, and Tube Your Lash mascara gives gorgeous lashes and won't cry off, plus it washes off easily with a splash of warm water.
The celebs got Tube Your Lash in their Oscar gift bags and there's nary an unpretty face in Tinseltown ... hmmm, wonder why?
