life + style to you: every Friday

Some people look to Punxsutawney Phil to let them know when spring has arrived. Personally, we’ve never trusted the furry little critter. We know spring has arrived when we hear the birds singing in the trees, spy cute open-toe wedges and flouncy skirts on the streets, can enjoy happy hour at a sidewalk table (without a parka)—and—as of last weekend, when we can once again visit the dog park with our own furry little critter.

Another dead giveaway that spring is here?  Everyone around you is in L-O-V-E. The dog park was couple central—and we aren’t just talking the human kind here. Labs and poodles, bulldogs and chihuahuas. One minute little FiFi was chasing her ball, the next our little angel in the pink sparkly collar was exchanging sniffs with a bruiser named Butch in a black leather collar with studs. Cue the Barry White music. They were virtually inseparable for the rest of the afternoon. Love is in the air, friends—so four legs or two—it must be spring.

In Via Veritas

We lived in Rome for a year in college and while we never understood the lure of the cat-calling Italian men, we do have a special place in our heart for Piero.  He was the only man we have ever known that could rock a vest as a top and look fabulous.  More importantly, he was our Roman hairstylist and he could do wonders with our crazy mop—no euro-mullets for us, thank you very much!

We never thought we could top Piero, particularly back home in fleece-happy Seattle, but Via Solferino Salon has—happily—proved us wrong.  The salon has a distinctly European feel—you’re even greeted with a frothy cappuccino.  You can also peruse a wonderful collection of Italian and French treasures while you’re there, from sparkling necklaces to glass espresso cups.  Most importantly, owner Nello and his staff offer one of the best haircuts in the city, with an eye for flattering but cutting-edge looks.

We will never forget Piero, but we love Via Solferino as a Belltown oasis of all things Italian.  Plus we always leave looking fabulous—and that will keep us coming back for years.

Shop with a Cause

This week we had to pay a parking ticket and library fines.  But we're looking on the bright side—the money we have to fork over supports good causes, like city roads and public access to books.  Fortunately, we just discovered a much more enjoyable way to support Seattle libraries, and it involves one of our favorite activities: shopping.

Located on the third floor of Downtown's Central library, the FriendShop is a treasure trove of reading-related paraphernalia, plus jewelry and accessories created by local artists.  All of the proceeds help support the programs and services of the Seattle Public Library.  So feel good about stocking up on handmade cards, bookmarks, reading journals, and the best magnets ever.  We couldn’t leave without a pair of crossword puzzle pajama bottoms.  We know—we're nerds.

Mention Seattle Picks and get 15% off your entire purchase in March!  And when someone asks where you got those fab earrings or that great "Reading is Sexy" t-shirt, you'll say "Oh, this? I got it at the library."  You'll be the cat's pajamas.  Meow.

Sweets for the Sweet

We admit it, we have a problem.  We have a sweet tooth that we just can’t seem to satisfy.  Oreos for breakfast, a handful of Gummi Bears with lunch, and of course, dessert with two of our best friends—Ben and Jerry.  Could this be why our trainer Thad is increasing our minutes on the treadmill lately…?

Despite Thad’s efforts, no one can separate us from Ben and Jerry—or from our new sweet heaven, the Confectionary.  The Confectionery is perfect for anyone who has ever needed just a taste of something sweet—or an entire pound of chocolate and needed it now.  Walking into this delightfully old-fashioned shop is like walking into the penny candy stores we heard about from our grandparents.  With literally hundreds of chocolates and candies to choose from, you may end up leaving with more than you planned … simply because everything looks so good.

And Thad, if white-chocolate covered popcorn and old-fashioned rock candy is bad, well frankly, being bad never tasted so good.

Jewelry for Your Jeans

We love vintage finds.  And homemade finds.  And one-of-a-kind finds!  So of course we love love love Judy Buckle's collection of unique belt buckles.  They're sparkly, Swarovski-encrusted, and totally fabulous!

We've always admired our best friend's ability to rock a big gold buckle and black v-neck tee, and now we think it's time we tried to pull off that look ourselves.  Plus … we heard that certain stylish celebs are rockin’ Judy Buckles … and we’re nothing if not trend spotters!

Lollipop Candy Kiss

As a little girl, did you always choose "the red one?"  You know, the cherry lollipop or the raspberry popsicle?  'Cause you knew if you applied it just right (like mom) it would give your lips a rosy and totally gorgeous hue.

Well, Treat Beauty figured out how to create that very same wash of vibrant color in a mineral lip stain.  It's made of shea butter and natural oils.  Jennifer Garner is a big fan, and so are we!

It's Only Politics

So you're off to do a little Presidential fundraising with the tot in tow, and you need a conversation starter to get the cash-flow going.  We suggest Emily Allyn's toddler tees and infant onesies, because nothing gets to the core of matter like a little baby talk and a parent who touts their party affiliation proudly.

And just in case little Willy gets in the middle of a heated debate, swap out the donkey or elephant tee for the Crab Cakes one. That'll be sure to leave the other side speechless!
