  SEATTLE PICKS
life + style to you: every Friday
March 21st, 2008

The amount of sports our husbands and boyfriends watch can be staggering. Beginning in September, every Sunday is spent watching football, from dawn to dusk. Once the Super Bowl is over, it’s time for the college basketball championships. Can’t a girl catch a break? All we want is a nice leisurely weekend spent strolling hand-in-hand, peeking in shop windows, stopping for a café latte. That has to be as much fun as football, right?

But in the spirit of compromise, we’re going to make a real effort to get on the college hoops bandwagon. We’re even going to fill out one of those bracket-y things. No one needs to know that we’re picking the winner based on uniform color and number of cute guys on the team. Bonding with our man is sure to win us one whole weekend spent shopping in the city—or at least a café latte.

p.s.: Being a devoted reader of Seattle Picks pays off, ladies! Forward this issue of Seattle Picks to 5 friends and CC picks@seattlepicks.com. You could win a $25 Gift Certificate to Tweed Boutique! Just think … you could be putting that $25 toward an adorable new spring top or necklace in no time.

A Shop Fit for a Queen

We have this reoccurring fantasy we just can’t shake.  No, it doesn’t include George Clooney or being left alone in Vogue magazine’s accessory closet.  We imagine leaving our corporate-selves behind.  No more bad office parties, battling the copier, or getting cabin fever in tiny cubicles.

The owner of Majesty must have had a similar fantasy.  Located in The Marketplace at Redmond Ridge, it’s a haven of fresh and stylish details for the home.  With a whimsical European aesthetic, Majesty could only come from someone with business savvy and impeccable taste.  Years of buying have trained the owner to pick the goods no one else has. We adore the custom furniture from LA’s Haute House, and the collection of delicate stemware and silk satchels is downright glamorous.  Flameless candles from local Ashley Danae Designs are smart, and ceramic place cards are a must for every hostess.

Until we make our own corporate departure we will joyously visit Majesty and buy one of those flameless candles for our desk; it does comply with corporate policy after all…

That’s Amoré!

We’ve never really been lucky in love.  That’s why this last February we were spending another Valentine’s Day celebrating our independence with a fellow single friend.  While grabbing a drink in Ballard, we decided to take part in lip-print-on-a-cocktail-napkin contest and pulled out a win.  With a gift certificate to a nearby restaurant in hand, we praised the god of love, who definitely works in mysterious ways.

A couple of weeks later, we joined three of our favorite single friends at Volterra.  Named after the Italian hilltop town in which the chef and his wife were married, Volterra captures the essence of Tuscan cuisine.  We shared delicious plates of lentil and pork jowl salad, wild boar in gorgonzola sauce, and a chestnut panna cotta. (We predict that Volterra’s modern Italian cuisine will win over even the staunchest of food critics.)

With a reasonably priced bottle of wine from their extensive Italian and local wine list,   we happily clinked our glasses and said a prayer to Cupid that we would have the same good luck next year.  With or without a date.

Walk This Way

We love Seattle’s distinct neighborhoods, each thriving with yummy restaurants and adorable shops.  For us it has created a new pastime—pick a neighborhood and spend an entire day exploring it.  We have made something of a game out of eating, shopping, visiting with friends, or just enjoying a new hood, and often, it’s all of them at once.

Sometimes we even find ourselves daydreaming that we’re in a different country—a fun twist to the exploration game.  And, thanks to boutiques like JayWalk, it’s not only a cinch, but its becoming somewhat of a regular occurrence.

For instance, last weekend we found ourselves envisioning a tiny shop in France, buzzing with neighbors and filled with an eclectic mix of wares.  We’re talking local art and antiques, children’s clothing, jewelry, scarves, aprons, soaps, candles, books, and cards.  Unique items tied together by a welcoming owner that invites shoppers to open drawers and to see, touch, and ultimately find their gem.  We know it’s been a long time since you’ve played Simon Says, but trust us.

Trouble-free Travel

We were beyond excited for our spring vacay to St. Bart’s last year.  But when we opened our suitcase to find our $100-an-ounce moisturizer had leaked all over our sarongs and swimsuits, we were less than pleased.

So we invested in Pitotubes—developed by a former flight attendant and TSA-compliant, they are completely leak-free and come with 14 pre-printed labels for shampoo, conditioner, etc.  Now this is traveling in style.  Enter the code SEA Picks at checkout for a 20% discount!
