April 4th, 2008
Last week we joined the entire family clan to celebrate Grandma’s 85th birthday with food, drinks and of course, fun. After dinner, the plan was to head to the new Cirque de Soleil show, “Corteo” (absolutely amazing by the way). But instead of all twelve of us carpooling there, we decided to surprise Grandma with a stretch limo—and a white stretch limo at that.
It had been a while since we rode in a limo, and we kept flashing back to our Senior Prom. The big puffy lilac princess dress, the completely hairspray-stiff updo, waving out the sunroof at passersby, the awkward conversation with our date on the way there, dancing to our favorite boy band of the moment, the cheesy poses in our prom photo, the cheap keg beer at the after-party… ahhh memories. It had us wishing that there were more opportunities to dress up and go dancing in adult life. It also had us wishing there were more occasions in life to take a limo. If we are ever given the choice between having a personal chef or having a limo, we’ll take the limo.
p.s. Don’t miss out on this week’s special offer—forward this issue of Seattle Picks to 5 friends and CC picks@seattlepicks.com. You could win a gift certificate to Oh! Chocolate for a 24-piece box of chocolate. Yum! |

Best Face Forward
We watch the red carpet events in total and complete awe of the flawless, translucent skin that the stars possess. How do they accomplish such a feat? Sure, our skincare routine has improved since high school, when we regularly slathered our faces with Oxy pads, but to get to that next level, we are in need of a guru—a skincare guru.
Ladies and gents, we have found her—our new skincare guru—at Jill Bucy Skincare, located in the MarQueen Hotel in Queen Anne. And let us just say that she has changed our lives. Inside her very Parisian-feeling salon, Jill Bucy and her fully CIDESCO-trained staff create customized treatment plans for your face. Focusing on French-style facials and skincare, the treatments are natural and unique, and completely amazing. During our 45-minute facial, we were continually impressed with the wealth of knowledge our facialist had—this girl knew skin. And since visiting, our skin has never felt more vibrant, smooth and bright.
We are assured that we will have movie-star skin in no time—and for once, we believe.

Le Frock C’est Chic
Last summer we were booked solid with weddings. We love weddings—cover bands, catching up with friends and free champagne? Genius! What we don’t love is the fashion minefield that wedding season creates. We all know the unspoken rule of repeat dressing, especially at events like weddings, where photographers and videographers can capture the faux pas on film.
But who can afford a new dress for every fete? Until we figure out how to become independently wealthy we’ll need to get savvy: work a little harder, look a little closer. Our secret weapon is Capitol Hill’s Le Frock. For almost two decades Le Frock has been providing stylish Seattleites with vintage and recycled fashions. We’re smitten with their collection of vintage bags, shoes and jewels, and we’re downright amazed by the designer pieces and prices! From Trina Turk to Diane Von Furstenberg, Le Frock’s “recycled” looks are fabulous.
We can’t help but feel a wave of relief knowing we can have a new look for every “I do.” Thank you, Le Frock. Next up: working on our moves for the dance floor!

Sweet Treats Without the Wheat
We love to indulge in cakes, pies and cookies—baked goods are our favorite treat and our nemesis—depending on how you look at it. After our recent discovery that we’re allergic to wheat (and the flour used to make all of our fave goodies) we are leaning more towards nemesis. Very dismal. That is, until we discovered Haley’s Corner Bakery in Kent.
This storefront shop is a dream come true for the wheat-free population. Bakery shelves are filled with pies, cookies, breads, muffins and more. Best of all, these goodies taste like the real thing (if you’ve ever tried a wheat-free cookie, you know it’s often hit or miss). It was all we could do to not stuff our faces with our purchases the moment we got into our car. The slice of berry pie (with the perfectly buttery crust) and the delish
lemon bar barely made it into our apartment.
If you are riding the wheat-free train like us, get yourself over to Haley’s Corner. After all, you shouldn’t be at war with pastries.

Fashion Meets Freedom
Nothing feels better than when you can shop and contribute to making the world a better place at the same time. So when we came across the wire crochet bags on the Uhuru Designs website, we went nuts.
Uhuru Designs represents designers from South Africa who employ only African artisans to make their collections—empowering women socially and economically. The bags are colorful and totally unique, so to do our part, we got one in every color.

A New Spring Handbag
We have been searching for a charming new clutch to use at night—something one-of-a-kind that will add a little spice to our new little black dress. When we found Nancy Phan’s bags, we knew we had hit the jackpot.
It was hard to make a choice, but in the end, we chose the lasered green and brown calfskin clutch—totally fierce! Now, all we need is a sky-high green stiletto and we will be ready to rock.

Mind Your Manners
Our adorable puppy is, truth be told, a little monster. Cute, yes. Good at obeying? Ha. Her bad behavior included jumping all over dinner guests until someone suggested the Manners Minder, a remote-control treat dispenser available at one of Seattle’s best training centers, Ahimsa Dog Training.
It actually helps to train Fido to behave—including giving a polite door greeting. Plus, our hands don’t get dirty! It is revolutionary—and our personal life-saver.
