life + style to you: every Friday

April 11th, 2008

Have you ever seen that show “Survivorman” on the Discovery Channel? The guy is completely brilliant—and completely insane. Not to mention, he does a lot of things that cause our gag reflex to start twitching. We sometimes find ourselves taking mental notes on how to survive should we ever become stranded in the desert or woods. Things like which bugs have the most protein, and make sure to pee all around the perimeter of your campsite to keep out bears.

We think we should start our own show about how to survive the biggest, hairiest, craziest sales of them all. “Survivorwoman.” We would include tips like stay hydrated, wear flat shoes, scout the terrain beforehand—know where you are headed. Don’t waste time in lingerie if you really want shoes. There could even be a special that was live from the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale. It’s gold we tell you. Pure gold!

p.s. Here’s your treat of the week, ladies—forward this issue of Seattle Picks to 5 friends and CC picks@seattlepicks.com. You could win a gift certificate to Retail Therapy for $40!

Totally Tots

Like most little girls, we spent a lot of time playing dress up. We would dream up a fabulous life as president (not so far off now!) while simultaneously caring for our (Cabbage Patch) quintuplets and dating eligible bachelors (that looked a lot like full-sized Ken dolls). Although this imaginary life sounds a little overwhelming to us now, we still love to play dress up in the most mature sense of the word. And with a recent birth in the family, we now get to play dolly with our adorable niece too.

We are currently solidifying our place as the “cool” auntie by shopping at Pop Tots. With a wide collection of punk t-shirts, vintage outfits and designer shoes, our little niece is going to be better dressed than we are. They also have a wonderful wall of artwork for sale, perfect for a hip nursery. With options like these, kids can get the boutique-ing bug from birth.

So while we may not be ready for kids ourselves, our biological shopping clock is definitely ticking for Pop Tots.

Let’s Get Physical

We envy the contestants on shows like “Celebrity Fit Club” and “Biggest Loser.” True, they have to work out like crazy, but the instructors make it look fun. Left to our own devices, we tend to get bored easily, and pretty soon we find ourselves inventing reasons to not go to the gym. Instead, we stay home and watch people exercise on television.

Recess is putting an end to those days—and our waistline couldn’t be happier. Their nutrition and fitness experts create personal fitness routines and meal plans that are completely holistic in their approach to getting fit. And here’s the kicker—they come to you! No more fighting for a parking spot just to get into a smelly gym. Recess will bring on-site yoga classes to the office for us and our co-workers, or meet us in our living room for a personal training session.

We love the convenience of it all—it’s no sweat. Well, except for that whole working out part. Mention Seattle Picks when you call and get 10% off an individual package or bring an instructor to your workplace for a free group class!

How Sweet It Is

We never got to celebrate our Sweet 16. Not with a pretty pink dress, a cake with 16 candles, or a big birthday bash. Instead, we got our license and headed to basketball practice—and yes, a decade later, we’re still a little bitter.

So we were thrilled when we heard that Madrona’s Dulces Latin Bistro will be celebrating their 16th birthday by serving each dinner guest a slice of birthday cake to end their evening, for the next week. What a way to make up for lost time! Especially since Dulces is the kind of charming, homey restaurant where the staff calls diners by name and a live pianist will play you a birthday tune should you time your visit right.

Plus they just unveiled their Latin-inspired spring menu. We shared spicy Prawns a la Diabla and brightly hued roasted red bell pepper ravioli stuffed with Mexican chorizo, mozzarella, and ricotta cheeses. Toothsome paella was chock full of chicken, flaky fish, bitty shrimp, Spanish chorizo, clams, mussels and calamari. And we still found room for dessert. After all, we came to celebrate.

Meet Me in Paris

Certain scents in life transport us to other places and times. The smell of Dolce and Gabbana’s Light Blue perfume reminds us of the semester we spent abroad in Florence. The smell of pies baking reminds us of our grandmother. Rendezvous Candles must have known this.

Their delicious smelling soy candles have scents made to match the destination in the names. We love the gardenia scent of “Paris Loft” and the frankincense/myrrh aroma of the “Bombay” candle. Ahh, memories.

Simply Enchanting

We like to live vicariously through our siblings that already have children. We play with our nieces and nephews, give them tons of candy, and then send them home with their parents.

One thing is for sure, though—when we have kids of our own, we are going to buy them a KLT:works mobile. Made by hand with cotton and wool felt, the vibrant colors and bold shapes are entirely charming and sure to keep the wee ones entertained.

For the Love of Paper

Notebooks, journals, cards, stationery—we can never seem to get enough of any of them. We love to cram our desk drawers full of beautiful paper products. So naturally, we are huge fans of the Pile of Paper, a collection of vintage greeting cards, postage stamps, postcards, paper dolls, maps, illustrations, labels and more.

Each pile is different, so you never know exactly what you are going to get—oh the sweet joy of paper!

  Cocktail of the Week!

Mind the Gap
Courtesy of Tini Bigs

With warmer weather on the horizon, we need a go-to cocktail that is light and fresh, so we headed to the renowned martini specialists in the area, the folks at Tini Bigs. The result was a Mind the Gap martini; named for the repetitive announcement in the London Tube to “mind the gap” (the space between the car and the platform) while boarding the train cars. Delightful name and a delightful taste. Drink up!

Mind the Gap

2 1/2 oz. Pimm's
1 1/2 oz. Absolut Citron
1/4 oz. Triple Sec
Pernod (just to wash)

Wash a martini glass with a thin layer of Pernod. Muddle a thick piece of cucumber and 2 orange slices. Add Pimm’s, Absolut Citron and Triple Sec, then strain into the glass. Garnish with a slice of cucumber.
