April 25th, 2008
Last weekend we indulged in one of our favorite guilty pastimes—karaoke. Really, really bad karaoke—involving lots and lots of alcohol. The kind where no one in the room even comes close to hitting anything resembling a note. In short, it was awesome.
There was a whole cast of characters there that had us rolling with laughter all night long. Among our favorites: the drunken stoner who got up to sing “Because I Got High,” complete with assistance from a smoke machine, and the May-December couple who sang the wonderfully sappy “Faithfully” from Journey while gazing into each other’s eyes. Our boyfriend tried to hound us into singing the oldie “My Guy” (a bet we lost to him long ago), but lucky for us, it was too late for any more requests.
We did however, do a rockin’ version of Sheryl Crow’s “The First Cut Is the Deepest” and brought the house down—we swear. Next time, we are thinking either Barry White or Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’.” You know, the classics.
p.s. How lucky are you? The giveaways just keep on coming—forward this issue of Seattle Picks to 5 friends and CC picks@seattlepicks.com. You could win a $50 gift certificate to Synapse 206. |

Neighborhood Revival
As avid boutiquers, always in search of unique shops, friends have repeatedly suggested we visit Georgetown, the up-and-coming south Seattle neighborhood. But while we love love love Manny’s Pale Ale (of Georgetown Brewery fame), we were a little skeptical of the seemingly industrial neighborhood. Girls, were we wrong.
Revival Home & Garden is just one of the many new and hip spots popping up in the not so new (but definitely hip) Georgetown neighborhood. We loved their collection of modern furniture paired with Asian flair and vintage steals. They have great gifts for the home as well, like ginkgo serving spoons. And at the back of the shop, we found terrific garden buys for those with green thumbs, plus a sweet kids’ section with soft tees and our favorite This is Paris book by Miroslav Sasek.
We wish Revival Home & Garden had moved into our neighborhood, but in the meantime we will just have to keep going back to Georgetown—a neighborhood that we definitely love love love.

Come Together
Although we give equal opportunity to all kinds of alcohol, our man is not always as open-minded. While we will gladly imbibe a goblet of wine, tart cocktail or frosty cold beer, our man likes to stick to his brews—making it hard to do one of our favorite pastimes—wine tasting—together. Luckily, we have found the best compromise in the history of our long list of compromises.
Full Throttle Bottles, a new specialty beer and wine shop, is immediately charming in that industrial-chic sort of way, and it is as budget-friendly as they come. They specialize in “Tuesday night” wines—meaning all but one or two of the bottles we lusted after were less than $30 and most of them can’t be found at our corner grocer. Such finds fill one side of the shop while beers dominate the shop’s second half. We spotted tons of imported and craft beers—and even a PBR hiding among them.
Compromising isn’t always fun, but this time it was definitely successful for both parties involved. We credit Full Throttle Bottles for our continued relationship bliss.

A Flair for Design
It takes a certain talent and flair to create the perfectly put-together abode. It’s a talent that we would like to think that we have, but others would disagree—namely, our mother. While we could just pick out an entire page of a catalog and call it good, she would be sad to think it looked just like a million other homes.
On the tip of a designer friend, we decided to check out Zanadia instead. And voilà, problem solved! This home décor and gift shop literally has everything you could ever need or want for the home—and beyond. Beaded, fringed and multihued pillows, plush couches and crystal bud vases cohabitate with Hobo handbags, delicate jewelry and the entire line of Voluspa candles. Across the way, we found an overflow for their larger furniture and Chinese antiques, full of trunks, bureaus, desks and mirrors.
Everything in the store blends together, creating a design aesthetic that would lend any home a stylish, one-of-a-kind feel that no mother could argue with. Naturally, we left with bags full.

Of-the-Moment Trend
Has anyone else besides us noticed the new trend sweeping the fashionable shows on TV this season? The headband is back, people, and we are jumping on the bandwagon with gusto. We are adding to our collection of plain black ones with the vintage-inspired ribbon headbands from One Crafty Diva.
Handmade in fun prints—we especially love the Burberry inspired stripes and the polka-dots—we now have enough to wear a new one every day!

Mmm … Barbecue
Ever since that one sunny hot weekend day, two weeks ago, we have been dreaming of summer and eagerly anticipating the mojitos, sun-tanning, camping trips and Seafair madness. Also among our daydreams—a big old-fashioned backyard BBQ.
We can hardly wait to try our newly found sauces from Docco’s on the first ribs and pulled-pork sandwiches of the season. Made from fresh vegetables, they are low-cal and low-carb, so we can slather as much as we want on our burgers. Drool…

Dessert of the Week! |
| |
|

We spent a semester abroad in Italy, and gained ten pounds during our sojourn—mainly from our daily consumption of gelato. However, we never ran into a dessert quite like the one being offered at Troiani for Administrative Professionals Week (April 20-26).
Known as the Favolosa e Indespensabile, it is layers upon layers of praline nougat and chocolate mousse, topped with goat cheese Bavarian cream and wrapped in fine chocolate. We may go every night for a week—for the administrative professionals of course.
