life + style to you: every Friday
May 23rd , 2008

Summer actually arrived in Seattle—for a day or two, anyway. Last weekend’s hot and sunny weather broke all kinds of records—and left us with a nasty sunburn. It was just what we had been waiting for so we could drink margaritas on a deck overlooking the water, get a tan, wear flip-flops again, and of course, shop for a new pair of sunglasses.

But now that it’s sunny out, we have to shave our legs every day. We have to start working out so we can wear swimsuits without having panic attacks. And we have to find a way to look cute and stylish at backyard barbecues in 80-degree heat despite the sweat pouring down our cleavage.

But we are up to the challenge. And here’s some help for you: Forward this issue of Seattle Picks to 5 friends and CC picks@seattlepicks.com. You could win a $25 gift certificate to Olivine Atelier to put toward your own perfect summer outfit!

Earthly Delights

Last summer, acting as the dutiful bridesmaid, we spent a week traipsing across Manhattan in search of the perfect paper products for our best gal pal's wedding—place cards, thank-you notes, favors—the works. From paper stores to gift shops, by the end of it all we were paper experts.

If only we'd found a one-stop shop like Wallingford's Paper Delights, we might have actually had time to enjoy New York! Offering cards, confections and cravings for any occasion, this new boutique is paradise on earth for those who delight in paper goods. Find the perfect card, and add a sweet treat to complete the gift—or create custom everything (invitations, place cards, wine labels, etc.) for those truly special events. Our favorite part of this charming shop? The color-coordinated tables of accessories and goodies!

Whatever your paper craving may be, the mother/daughter team behind Paper Delights will find something to satisfy … so you don’t have to search to the ends of the earth like we did.

All Spruced Up

Everyone knows that we are obsessed with Northwest designers and boutiques. It is less common knowledge that we are also huge supporters of local dining—and we love shopping at the weekend farmers’ markets around Seattle. Unfortunately, we never seem to know what to do with our bounty of local produce once we get it home. Does anyone know what a cardoon is, let alone how to cook it?

So until we can get our cooking techniques up to par, we have been seeking inspiration and great eats at Sitka and Spruce. Tucked into a strip mall in the Eastlake neighborhood, this cozy restaurant boasts an amazing Northwest menu featuring local farmers, fishmongers and wineries. We particularly love their Saturday and Sunday brunch. In addition to the more standard egg options, they also have a delectable buffet with local breads and veggies, house-made marmalade, and Rockridge Orchards honey.

Happily, Sitka & Spruce makes it easy and tasty to eat locally. Plus, with their ever-changing seasonal menus, we can dine there over and over again—until we learn to cook cardoon. Maybe.

Fabulous Foot Fix

We’ve been avid runners since high school, which is great for our health but awful for our feet. We’re so embarrassed by our calloused, blistered toes and cracked heels that we hide them in wooly socks all winter and absolutely abhor flip-flop season.

This year, we decided to fix our feet by getting an early start with a spring pedicure at Oasis Spa & Salon. Tucked away atop a gym, one would never guess that such a spacious, serene spa existed up there! We loved the décor (it evoked the look of a Tommy Bahama store with potted plants and warm hues), and even more, we loved the staff’s approach to pampering from head to toe.

We settled on the sport pedicure, designed—you guessed it—to fix our feet, with nail shaping, cuticle care, exfoliation, and a massage. The 45-minute treatment ended with a paraffin-wax dip that left our skin buttery soft. We didn’t even recognize our feet! Next visit, we’ll be sure to schedule a caviar facial, salon haircut, and—if we’re really feeling a need to pamper—a cocoa butter massage. Ahhh…

Runner’s High

With swimsuit season upon us, we have recently taken up running again—in extreme earnest. But with a few (try 15) extra pounds around the middle, it was time for new running clothes.

We found the best-fitting (not too poofy, not too short) running shorts at Oiselle Running, a local company founded by a lifetime runner. We also got the T-shirt with “run” across the front, which we will use as our new mantra, come 6 a.m. Monday morning.

A Relaxing Aroma

Last week on a flight to Chicago, we encountered some nasty turbulence. Sitting white-knuckled in our seat, we thought of the Calm Me aromatic balm from Rouge Aromatics in our handbag.

We opened the drawstring muslin bag it came in, applied the all-natural and organic balm (created by a certified aromatherapist) to our pulse points, and as we breathed in the ylang-ylang and mandarin scent, we felt our vise-like grip on the seat slowly easing. Sweet relief.

Just Kickin’ It

We frequently fall victim to the dreaded Heel Wedgie. You know—when your pants bunch up and get caught between your foot and your shoe when you are wearing long pants and open-back heels.

We thought it was incurable, but then we found Kix by Katie! It’s a lightweight fabric strip that can be applied to the back hemline of your pants, adding a little extra weight and rigidity. Genius! Our pants now hang nicely wherever we go.
