  SEATTLE PICKS
life + style to you: every Friday
May 30th, 2008

We are about to enter the most hectic, emotional roller-coaster-of-a-ride season. That’s right—it’s wedding season. Almost every weekend is spent traveling to-and-fro for weddings, rehearsal dinners and bachelorette parties. Waistlines expand from wedding cake; feet become permanently deformed from ankle-breaking heels, and we are regularly forced to participate in the embarrassing tradition of the tossing of the bouquet. Not to mention that by the end of this wedding season, if we hear “Celebration” one more time, we will go postal.

It kicked off last weekend with our cousin’s wedding. The nuptials were perfect (the groom even shed a tear when the bride came down the aisle), but things began to deteriorate as the reception progressed. As the wedding party took advantage of the open bar, the toasts become more rambling and erratic, and the situation on the dance floor began to more closely resemble a mosh pit. We have to hand it to the bride though—she remained calm and composed, and before long she was a part of the mayhem! Hey, if you can’t beat 'em, join 'em, right?

p.s. Just in case you need a new outfit or accessories for your wedding season, we have a treat to help you make that new purchase. Forward this issue of Seattle Picks to 5 friends and CC picks@seattlepicks.com. You could win a $25 gift certificate to Sway and Cake!

Don’t Make Up Your Mind

We're certain Murphy's Law has it out for us. Wherever we go, they're out of our size, our dessert pick, or our fave polish color. And of course, in Seattle, we're convinced this extends to the weather as well. While shopping down on 1st Avenue, we suddenly got caught in the rain. (Shocker!)

Thank goodness we were in the right place at the right time! The sprinkles became a fleeting thought once inside Sandylew, an eclectic, cozy boutique complete with requisite chandeliers. (Take that, Murphy!) Double thank goodness for the treasures we added to our wish list. We struggled between the brocade handbag and the grass-colored weekender bag, but grabbed both, since Sandylew has scarves to go with either, in retro-y graphic or lofty botanical prints.

We beelined for precious pieces like Italian designer Pono's black resin necklace, immediately declared it our new obsession, and will be wearing it on date night to the theatre (yes, that’s with an “re”). We’re pretty sure Sandylew has something for every occasion, which is great since our style is so indecisive, er, eclectic.

The Ladies Who Lunch

Growing up, we always looked forward to visits from our aunt. She was the one who taught us the truly important things—like life is too short to go without cookies, the necessity of good coffee, and the joy of afternoons spent with girlfriends.

She was the first person we thought of when we walked into the Hi Spot Café at 3:58 p.m. It turns out that they close at 4:00, but by the quality of the latte and the freshness of the cookie, we thought they still had hours to go till quittin’ time. There was only one choice: go back for lunch the next day.

Now that was a smart choice. The restaurant upstairs is cozy but not crowded, the kind of place that practically begs you to linger with your friends. As wonderful as the setting is, the food is even better. Lunch was simply delicious. The salad was fresher than any salad has a right to be this time of year. And did we mention the cookies? We know our aunt would approve.

Lookin’ Good

As women, we try our best to always radiate that ‘I just stepped out of the beauty salon’ glow.  If we all had stylists, personal chefs, and trainers like celebrities, of course we would look just as fabulous as Heidi Klum … all the time.  But since we aren’t that lucky, and we need a little help when the time comes to take care of eyebrows, nails, and other hairy situations, we have the expert for you.

Uni-brows and unsightly bikini lines (eek!) are now a thing of the past thanks to the hair taming talents of the esthetician at the Highbrow Waxing and Nail Studio. Armed with wax, tweezers, and meticulous patience, Highbrow can provide you with the brows of your dreams. After one session, we received compliments on our new look and were ready to show our faces for a night on the town.

This city chic salon with its leaf-green walls and white leather chairs is located inside Retail Therapy, a boutique, so go for the Highbrow pampering and stay even longer for the earrings and shoes.

Nocello and the ‘Cello’ Flight
Courtesy of Tidbit

We love all things Italian—the pasta, the gelato, the art, the men—and of course, the Limoncello. So we were quite pleased to discover the ‘cello’ flight at Tidbit—a chance to taste four of their five different flavored ’cellos. Our favorite is the Nocello, a walnut and hazelnut liquer with vanilla tones, but the Raspicello was a close second with a blend of rich berry flavors made from wild raspberries from Italy’s Abruzzi region. Salute!

Everybody Poops… But We Don’t Have to Admit It

Traveling always messes with our, um, bathroom routine. When we flew cross-country to meet our boyfriend’s family for the first time, two days in, we still hadn’t…gone. Wouldn’t you know, in the middle of a twenty-person family dinner, the moment struck.

Wish we knew about Just a Drop back then. Just one drop in the bowl before you go eliminates the eau de poo afterward—and spares you the embarrassment when Granny goes in right
after you.

More Vitamin E, Please!

Looking at the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit edition a few weeks ago (you know you wanted to look at it too), we decided we wanted the kind of smooth skin that we see on the swimsuit models (the zero-percent body fat wouldn’t hurt, either).

And this summer, we are getting it with the Vitamin E Body Treatment from Jo Malone that sloughs away old skin while moisturizing. It’s available June 1, so you can be a swimsuit model too. Sorta.

Beautiful Inside and Out

We are total suckers for cute packaging. There could be nothing but shredded newspaper inside, but if it has a pretty outside, we could care less what’s inside. And though that sounds bad, we promise that it doesn’t extend to people.

So how stoked were we when we found Velana K lip glosses? Not only are they oh-so-pretty on the outside, but the glosses come in ten fabulous shades that make our lips soft and plump. It’s the whole package.
