August 29th, 2008
The imminent arrival of fall is making us feel bittersweet. When we were kids, we weren’t necessarily excited to go back to homework, but we were excited to do back-to-school shopping—and not just for clothes (although that was the definite highlight). We loved picking out new pens, pencils, Trapper-Keepers and Peechees. Any chance to shop we suppose…
These days we get our back-to-fall kicks a different way. We buy every September issue of Vogue, InStyle, Harper’s Bazaar, Lucky—they each weigh about a ton—and we plant ourselves on the couch, turn off our phones, sip a martini, and read each one cover to cover. Absolute bliss.
And we’re always thinking of you! Forward this issue of Seattle Picks to 5 friends and CC picks@seattlepicks.com, and you could win a matching necklace and earring combination, made with Peruvian Opal and Citrine stones, designed especially for Seattle Picks by Rock Star Jewelry. |

Mix and Match
We remember how much fun we used to have when we would rummage through grandma’s closet and parade our finds around town, shuffling in her saddle-shoe pumps, bobble necklaces and beaded carnival glass clip-on earrings. And we’re okay with the fact that we haven’t outgrown playing dress up, especially when we mix and match vintage and trendy.
Marilyn Berg in Belltown is like being inside your grandmother’s jewelry box, with a glam twist. This boutique gets it right by featuring iconic, luxury fashion, including tortoise-shell handbags, Titanic-style toque hats and cascading strings of pearls and fashion-forward, contemporary clothing lines. Marilyn Berg’s trendier inventory includes pieces by Ed Hardy and Crystal Rock. Marilyn also hosts her own line of jewelry and accessories, including a series of Lucite laser-cut earrings, featuring funky and fun prints of wiener dogs, Eiffel Towers and cactuses.
Pair an Ed Hardy “rock n’ roll” rhinestone top with a Marilyn Berg original cowboy boot-stitched, leather tote to throw over your shoulder and you’ve got the perfect equation—art deco, plus eccentric and bold accessories. It equals totally glamorous fun!

Sweet Tooth
Lately, we’ve noticed that the sweltering summer evenings have brought out our romantic, Parisian sensibilities—and our sweet tooth! And all of the sudden, we find ourselves hunting out the Seattle haunts that complement our desire d’jour.
Where else can we beat the heat, and satiate our sweet tooth, than Bakery Nouveau? We headed to the West Seattle favorite to sip a much needed iced coffee, and watch the locals pass us by with their pups and tots in tow. We indulged ourselves with a creamy coconut Parisian macaroon that had the lightest but richest coconut filling. But then we noticed how lonely it looked, sitting on the plate all by itself, so we found a friend in the milk-chocolate rocher. With its salty slivered almonds and melt-in-your-mouth silky chocolate, it barely had a chance to get acquainted with the macaroon before meeting its maker.
We know Bakery Nouveau is well known for its breads, and we really should have picked up on a crispy baguette or the Croque Monsieur that was calling our name from the bottom shelf… but there’s always tomorrow.

Summer Sipping
It’s August, the sun is shining, birds are singing, we’re wearing our fabulous new shades, and there is no place we rather be than outside on our patio. After a long day, quiet time with a good magazine (such as our guilty pleasure US Weekly) and a well-deserved beverage feels like a little slice of heaven. Lately our refreshment of choice has been cool, crisp white wine, especially the satisfyingly sweet varieties.
And when we’re in the market for wine, we find Madison Park Cellars a mouth-watering treasure hunt. Located in a stone-walled room below street level, shoppers find endless selections of red, white, champagne, and dessert wines in all price ranges. Varietals from all over the world are represented and the more we search, the more we discover. On our last visit, we found a bottle with a bright, fun polka dot label on which we based table décor for a dinner party!
If you have a favorite or are looking for an excellent wine pairing for a recipe (or the new issue of Allure), head to the Cellars, ask the experts, sip, and enjoy!

Sets Our Hearts A-Flutter
As we begin to mature and grow into our sense of style, we have discovered that some days, we feel the need to make a dramatic, eye-catching statement—you would too if you worked in a gray cubicle all day.
Portland-based Flutter has plenty of unique, statement-making items, from hard to find perfumes to home décor, but our pick is this Peacock Feather necklace—sure to put an extra strut in our step and kick any outfit up a notch.

A Place to Call Our Own
After years of roommate issues, dumpy apartments and moving at least every six months, we are finally settling down and getting our own place. It’s small, but it’s pretty… and it’s all ours.
Naturally, we need pretty things to decorate our space—and the first thing on our list will be this Egg Planter by J Schatz for our mini-patio. In tons of candy colors and a unique, mod shape, it’s our first truly grown-up purchase for the home.

Very Hollywood Street
Browsing the tabloids usually makes us feel envious, greedy, and five sizes too big. So obviously we keep reading them. We're masochists like that.
Anyway, the typical Hollywood starlet is the same shrinky-dink size as our 13-year-old prepubescent cousin. Though we maintain the occasional hamburger and ice-cream diet, we can't deny that we track the low-key style of the L.A. scenesters. Grab a boho-glam beret or hippie leather-woven headband from Bleu Dame, and strut the Seattle streets like the celebrity you are!
