September 5th, 2008
While we feel that we were totally robbed of the last few weeks of summer by the very un-August-like weather, there is one good thing about the impending arrival of fall. Our television shows are back after the summer hiatus—and we could not be more excited. We here at Seattle Picks love our nights out on the town, dancing with the ladies and sipping our cocktails, but we are also big fans of night spent on the sofa with a cozy blanket, sweat pants and the television remote firmly in hand.
Among the shows we are totally stoked to welcome back? “Gossip Girl,” baby! We are head-over-heels for this deliciously racy soap and its drool-worthy fashions. And with the arrival of the new “90210,” the soapy-ness is about to get even better. Nothing will ever replace the original, but we have high hopes for the new class. And let us all give thanks this fall for the return of old favorites—Drs. McDreamy and McSteamy. As un-cool as it may sound, we can’t wait to stay in with our television this fall and indulge in a little escapism with our favorite characters.
In need of an outfit befitting a Serena or a Blair? Forward this issue of Seattle Picks to 5 friends and CC picks@seattlepicks.com, and you could win a $50 gift certificate to Sandylew! |

No Pain, No Gain!
Man, oh man, do we hate moving. We hate the trash we realized we’ve kept for way too long, the clothes we find while packing that don’t currently fit, and most of all we hate the actual moving from one place to the next. We get backaches, we get sweaty, and then we get to unpack all our stuff at the new place. Why hasn’t anyone figured out that Transporter-thingy from “Star Trek,” so next time we can just push a button and be done with the whole mess? Beam up all our crap, Scotty.
We decided to alleviate our backaches with retail therapy, since we knew the best way to make all our old (boring) stuff shine was to compliment it with a few new accents from Camelion Design. And did we hit the jackpot! We found the cutest bird-motif lantern for our front porch, a new ceramic party platter for our housewarming party from TAG, and long-stemmed matches in jacquard print boxes.
Stay tuned for your housewarming invite—we have a hankering to show off our new digs and all the newly acquired decorative pieces that make it sparkle!

Girls Just Want to Have Fun
A gaggle of giggly girls in a limo, tromping from bar to bar in Pioneer Square, searching for the next item on the scavenger hunt ... ahhh, those were not the days. Now that we’re a bit older and a whole lot wiser we opt for a chill night of handcrafted cocktails, hip atmosphere, and intimate conversation.
And we find it at Hazlewood, a tiny jewel box of a bar in Ballard. You might miss this narrow, two-story space if you’re not on the lookout (or in the know). Inside you’ll find exposed brick, sexy lighting, and tunes to make an aspiring DJ jealous. But really, Hazlewood is all about drinks. Perfectly balanced, pitch-perfect drinks! If you’re adventurous try one from the pre-prohibition era, or stay safe with a champagne cocktail. For the nostalgic in your bunch there’s always Schlitz in a can!
Once you step inside, head straight for the bar to order and try to snag a spot upstairs (we dare you to look in the peephole for a naughty surprise). Bachelorettes with tiaras and toilet-paper veils need not apply.

In Full Bloom
What is it about flowers? Is it the bright colors or the fragrant scent? It’s definitely not our ability to keep them alive and green. And why is it that women love flowers? We give our significant others extra brownie points when they bring home a bouquet, and yes, we declare that it is okay to buy ourselves flowers for no special reason, which we don’t do often enough!
When we’re in the mood for fresh-cut flowers or suddenly develop the energy to garden, we head to Best Buds in Madison Park. Not only does Best Buds offer reasonably priced bouquets, but also offers a pleasant horticultural shopping experience. Various varieties are displayed in a peaceful courtyard, as well as down the sidewalk and around a charmingly authentic British telephone booth. Step inside the cottage-like storefront to discover take-home ready flowers of all sizes and colors.
With the rainy Seattle fall all too close around the corner, we are dead set on enjoying the best of summer while it lasts, and lots of flowers!

Root Beer Floatini
Who doesn’t love a root beer float? Ice cream and soda combined in one frosty, frothy, tasty glass. And when someone figures out how to add alcohol to one of our favorite sweet treats, all the better! Three Olives makes all different kinds of flavored vodka—including root beer flavor, which can be used to give this timeless classic a little kick.
Root Beer Floatini:
1 ½ oz. Three Olives Root Beer Vodka
½ oz. Amaretto Liqueur
Root Beer
Shake hard over ice and strain into a glass. Float a melon-sized (or bigger!) ball of vanilla ice cream in the center. What a dreamy drink!

Because You Deserve It
As former Girl Scouts, we wish we could still get merit badges for the things we have accomplished in our adult lives, like surviving bad breakups, getting promotions, or just for being awesome. Our prayers were answered when we found these merit badges for grownups at Good Egg Industries.
Reward your best friend for “Rolling with the Punches” or better yet, mail the last guy you dated the patch for “Being a Dirt Bag.” We say, flaunt your accomplishments like you did when you were a kid.

Something to Hold On To
We are currently dreading the impending gloom and doom of the fall and winter season in Seattle. We feel like summer just barely arrived, and already we’re being plunged back into the gray wetness that makes our city so very special.
Not to worry, when it gets dreary outside, we’ll grab one of these clutches from Red Ruby Rose to brighten the day and our spirits. With bright colors, and prints and flowers on them, we may need to get several to get us through the months ahead.

Oh-So-Pretty
Ever since we read the “Great Gatsby” in high school, we have wanted to throw a Gatsby-themed party for ourselves—all glitz, champagne and romance. And oh, the costume options!
After we stumbled upon these amazing head-bands by Ban.Dō, we decided this was going to be the year. Handmade with satin ribbons, vintage flowers, tulle and feathers, we are head-over-heels for these perfectly lovely adornments—so much so that we don’t even need a party to wear them—we’ll wear them every day with our jeans.
