September 12th, 2008
We celebrated Ye Olde 27th birthday this past week, and we have to say, it may have been the first time that we didn’t welcome our special day with open arms. It may sound silly, but turning 27 felt old. We realize it’s not old at all, but we didn’t feel prepared to turn 27 quite yet—we haven’t accomplished half the things that we had planned to by this point in our lives. Back in high school and college, we thought that we would be so mature at this age, and that we would definitely have all our um—stuff—together. But most days, we feel like we are still 21, still trying to figure life out.
It didn’t help when we turned on the MTV Video Music Awards last week, hoping to see Britney perform (we were dying to see her redeem herself after last year’s disastrous performance), and saw that the most popular acts there were The Jonas Brothers and Miley Cyrus. That made us feel really, really old. In fact, in all of our newly found 27-year-old maturity, we came to realize that we may have finally outgrown MTV. Except for The Hills—we will always love The Hills. We just don’t love being that much closer to 30—guess its time to get crackin!
As present for you, dear readers, young or old, forward this issue of Seattle Picks to 5 friends and CC picks@seattlepicks.com, and you could win one of two gorgeous, unique and fun fabric belts from Obi Design! |

Back in the Saddle
Summer in Seattle never seems to last as long as we would like, but we’ve developed certain survival tactics to make the change in seasons a little smoother on our psyche. And our tried-and-true favorite is, of course, stocking up on what’s fresh and new for fall.
So imagine our delight when we discovered Fremont’s Show Pony, a fresh new boutique (from the creator of Olivine) stocked with everything we need to start the season off right: Prairie Underground hoodies to keep us cozy, scents by Suzanne Lang ad Lulu Beauty to keep us smelling lovely, handcrafted bags by Stich & Swash and Crystalyn Kae to keep all the essentials close at hand, and Suzy Jack paper goods for gals like us who long for the good ol’ days of school supply shopping.
Show Pony will officially open its doors on Saturday, Sept. 13, with an all-day party (11 am–6 pm) featuring door prizes and Trophy cupcakes. Wild horses couldn’t keep us away!

Spanish Snacks
We often reflect on the days when we were young baccalaureates, backpacking across Europe where the Mediterranean sun was ablaze (Spain was kinda our fave). We were broke as a joke, and avoided the sweltering heat of our 4th-floor hostel room by camping out on the terrace of our favorite café into the wee hours of the hot summer nights.
These days, we can capture a little bit of the Spanish summer here in Seattle by watching the Running of the Bulls on ESPN, but we’d rather go to Txori. This casual tapas bar brings the charm (and chorizo) of Spanish summer evenings to Belltown with an authentic menu of San Sebastian-style pintxos. Even at one a.m. we pulled up a bar stool, ordered a refreshing Kalimocho (red wine and Coca-cola) and snacked away—Basque style. We inhaled the gazpacho shots, calamares and empanadillas, and savored every morsel of the braised lamb and potato mousse.
Every dish made us feel like we were back in Spain, raiding our host family’s pantry for savory midnight delights—delicioso!

Walk This Way
We love love. We love seeing something for the first time and thinking, “How on earth did we live without this?!?” And there’s nothing we love more than our staple pair of heels. We love that they’re broken in just the right amount, that they’re so versatile and go with everything, and most of all, we love hearing “OMG! Where did you get those?!?”
What we don’t love is when what happened walking down 5th Avenue last Saturday. We realized we had mega-blisters from shopping in those favorite shoes—at the exact same time that we stepped in an air grate on the sidewalk and broke our heel off. Awesome. But honestly, it just gives us the chance to fall in love again. So we headed to Strut, where we couldn’t decide between the black heels with pin-tuck piping, or the black heels with chunky sling back, or the black heels with the peep toe, or, well, you get the idea. We ended up getting the black heels—all of them.
We love love, and we definitely love Strut.

Cocktail of the Week! |
| |
|

In honor of the world premiere of Shrek at the 5th Avenue Theatre, from now until Sept. 21 you can imbibe Shrek-themed drinks at Tulio restaurant. Our personal fave is the Gingee—the tastiest way we could think of to start (or finish) a night at the theater.
The Gingee:
Ginger-vanilla bean infused vodka
Muddled limes
Triple sec
Splash of milk
Don’t even try to make this one at home—it’s served up with a gingerbread rim!

Fashionably Responsible
With fall right around the corner, we have been making lists of what we’ll need to add to our wardrobe for the new season—including plenty of accessories in the color of the season—purple. Not to mention, this organic fleece trench coat we found at Fashion Ethic.
All items at Fashion Ethic come from companies that have some sort of ethical compass—whether it be using organic materials or implementing fair labor policies. And we’ll feel good about our ethical compass wearing this cozy, stylish coat come fall.

Shimmy Shimmy, Shop!
Remember getting carpooled? We specifically remember singin' shimmy shimmy coco puff at the top of our lungs and eating after-school snacks in minivans. Ah, such sweet, simple joy.
We still revel in simplicity (i.e. www.shopittome.com). Shop It To Me is a site that’s in tune with every shopper’s tastes. It’s free, and quite like having a personal shopper who lets you know when your fave brands are on sale, in your size. How joyous is that? Shimmy shimmy coco puff, shop it to me now!

Sweet Feet
If we could get away with wearing nothing but flip-flops year round, we would. As it is, we have been living in our sandals all summer long, and are now paying the price with dry, cracked feet—not cute.
To revive our tootsies, we are giving ourselves an at-home pedicure with Product Body Sugarfoot. A foot scrub made with pure sugar, organic coconut oil and shea butter, it moisturizes and exfoliates. Plus it comes in one of our favorite scents—cookie. Loverly.
