life + style to you:

September 26th, 2008
This past weekend we defied the odds the critics gave it, and went to see The Women. And despite what the critics said, we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and the on-screen female bonding. There were great shoes, bags and clothes, touchingly tearful moments, laugh-out-loud scenes and even lessons to be learned. And even more impressive, there was not a man to be found—and not just in the theatre—but not in one scene of the movie. Not even in the background!
And while we found ourselves wondering what was wrong with Meg Ryan’s face at certain points, it served to remind us how great women friends are. We have friends from as far back as sixth grade who that have seen us through thick and thin, break-ups and make-ups, bad clothes, bad hair, and the occasional life crisis—and they are completely irreplaceable. Sometimes we think it would be worse to break up with them than a boyfriend, since they are so essential to our lives. Well, maybe not, but you get the point. Just thank goodness for our girlie BFFs.
And thank goodness for our readers! To show our appreciation, forward this issue of Seattle Picks to 5 friends and CC picks@seattlepicks.com, and you could win a free reusable tote from Green Chic Bag Co.! See below for more details! |

Raw Talent
We have a fab friend with an amazing sense of style—and she always has our back in the fashion department. She insures that our closet only gets infused with chic, unique pieces, making her virtually indispensable on shopping trips.
Unfortunately, she has a life of her own. So when she's not around, we head to RAW Threads to peruse the ever-changing array of original clothing by local designers like Suzabelle, Mac Fashion House, and owner of RAW Threads herself, Audrise. Thus the name, “RAW” (Real Artists at Work), and we must say, they work it. This shop is hard to spot (it’s on the second level above the street) so keep your eyes open for a small sign pointing the way upstairs. On a recent trip we got a sneak peek at some of the new fall pieces. We loved a silk dress in deep purple with modern lines and flirty, feminine details. We also snatched up a new jacket for fall with bold topstitching and elegant oversized lapels.
Our friend will be so proud—one gold star for us!

Hooked on a Feelin’
The final days of fun in the sun are just about gone, and we’re slipping into that early fall “I-don’t-want-to-get-all-gussied-up, but-still-wanna-have-a-ladies-night-out-in-Belltown” mood. Whenever we get this way, we retreat to the little places in Seattle that manifests what we’re feeling: sweet and sexy, without trying too hard.
And the Local Vine fits it to a tee! We sat at the window with our BFF and gabbed about her recent travels abroad (aka “living vicariously through her Middle Eastern jaunts”) over roasted figs with blue cheese, and some rich Delice d’Argental (pasteurized cows’ milk cheese from France) with crostini. We heard a story so outrageous we knew she couldn’t have made it up while sipping white-peach nectar Bellinis, then switched to an earthy Pinot Noir from Trentino, Italy, before finishing with the signature chocolate cake.
All in all, it would’ve been the perfect early fall ladies’ night, if only we’d figured out how to enjoy all the food without actually consuming all the calories…

Triple Threat
We’re girly girls, yes, but it’s not like we wear stiletto heals and slinky, sex-kitten dresses every single day. Besides, there’s nothing un-girly about a pair of sneakers and jeans. Have you seen America’s Best Dance Crew? Those beat girls rock it in their hi-tops sneakers and warm-up suits.
We may not be break dancing beat girls like those on MTV, but we want their shoes! Triple in Ballard features cool lines of re-engineered “old-school” styled sport shoes (Reeboks, Puma, and the 1985 classic, Nike Dunks), in all colors of the rainbow and in just about every combination you can imagine. They also carry contemporary designer labels from Onitsuka and Jhung Yuro to Clae, in styles that harken back to the streets of San Francisco, circa 1983.
And if shoes weren’t enough, Triple features local DJs to spin records on the turntables while you shop. Match up a pair of grape colored Clae hi-tops with the current vinyl selection and go try out for So You Think You Can Dance!

These Boots are Made for Walkin’
We have a particular affinity for all things British—the accents, Coldplay, David Beckham, and great words like “bugger” and “daft.” Not to mention the style icons—hello, Kate Moss! We have always wanted to pull of her look—especially wearing a pair of “wellies” at a rock concert in the English countryside.
Now we can, in the high-quality rubber rain boots from Aigle that are handcrafted in Europe. They’re useful and stylish! Now, if we could just meet Prince William, we’d be golden.

Anything but Basic
Sometimes we get so swept up in the latest trends—like skinny jeans and boho chic—that we forget one of the most important fashion rules: always fill out your closet with basic, staple pieces.
This fall we are taking it to heart and stocking up on the wealth of stylish basic options from Shade Clothing. Our favorite is this cropped fleece jacket that will go with everything. Sometimes it feels good to follow the rules.

Shop with Eco-friendly Style
We are totally into reusable grocery bags recently. Most of the time, we don’t get to the grocery store until there is nothing left in our fridge but baking soda and condiments, so we happen to need a lot of them to haul home all our loot.
We recently added these eco-chic totes from Green Chic Bag Co. to our collection. Water-resistant and machine washable, they come in tons of great prints that keep us looking good as we peruse the produce aisle.
