We’re not much for vampires, though they’re everywhere lately. (Not literally—just on TV.) And when we recently received a copy of the book Twilight, we were more than a little skeptical to start reading it. Aside from the “teen scene” audience, the content (vampires) are so not our thing. We don’t do sci-fi, we don’t do the X-Files or anything like zombies and werewolves, so we thought, eh, pass—even though everyone and their mom seemed to be raving about it—not just the tween set.

And predictably, one chapter in we couldn’t put the darn thing down. We were absolutely riveted. We neglected our dog, boyfriend, family, work, everything to read the whole series (four books) in less than three weeks. As nerdy as it may sound, we are telling everyone to read it—it’s totally romantic—seriously.

Want to add some romance to your life another way? Forward this issue of Seattle Picks to 5 friends and CC picks@seattlepicks.com, and you could win this free necklace from Liebling Designs! See below for more details!

Where the Wind Blows

One of the best things about losing our tan and being cold all the time is that we get to experiment with our cold-weather wardrobe. After all, fall accessories are some of the most fun to play with. Okay, so maybe this is the only thing that’s good about losing out on sunshine, but hey, we’ll take any excuse for a new hat-scarf-glove combo.

Which is why we were stoked to see Parisian-inspired scarves, smoke-grey totes (one of the colors of the season, ladies!) and chunky silver rings the other day at Istina. It totally brought out our inner brooding poet, and we couldn’t resist imagining ourselves at a small café on the Champs-Elysees, sipping Chartreuse while wearing the saffron cashmere scarf with one of the cute sweaters from Babette, or toting the PETA-friendly bag from Matt & Nat.

No matter that the only place you’ll see us wearing them is on 5th Avenue, while engaging in some much needed retail therapy. It will help us forget that we won’t be in Paris anytime soon—darn those shopping debts!

The Moose is Loose

We are so tired of the ubiquitous Mexican restaurant. You know what we mean: Corona posters on the wall, bad margaritas, and way too much greasy, yellow cheese. Although really, a bad margarita is better than no margarita ... but we digress. The other day we stumbled upon Señor Moose Café and swooned with delight.

Don’t be fooled by the name or the moose paraphernalia. This charming—dare we call it a dive—is about really good food. Don’t expect pretentious trappings (or quick service) just delicious comida tipica (e.g.: real Mexican food). You will find dishes from all over Mexico, from Chihuahua to Oaxaca. We drooled over succulent pork cooked in a tropical mole made of plantains, pineapple, yummy spices and chile guajillo, and Vegan peeps will be thrilled (no need to order yet another veggie burrito) with the vegetarian mole—sans crema—made with no less than 25 ingredients.

Come for dinner or breakfast and you won’t be sorry. The wait may be long, but hang in there. Viva la Mexico! Long live the Moose!

Some Like it Cold (and Overcast)

Fall officially arrived last week, and in the face of nine straight months of overcast, chilly temperatures and pounding rain storms, we bravely command, "Bring it on." Some may call us crazy, but we say it’s no big deal when you've got chunky knitted scarves, cozy cashmere sweaters and Italian wool jackets to wear all season long.

Endless Knot in Belltown is all about the fall fashion, featuring classic autumn motifs like plaids, knits, and tweeds from BB Dakota and Tulle, and our favorite rain boots from Nomad. But with the colder weather comes fur and leather—so what is an eco-friendly girl to do when she wants to shop with a clear conscience? Endless Knot also has that fashion dilemma solved. We can relish all the layered lusciousness of fall fashion with 100% faux fur and faux leather in hats and vests from Happy Animals and bags and totes from Big Buddha.

Fall still may not be our favorite season in Seattle, but thanks to the cozy fashions from Endless Knot, fall is now totally hot.

Fall Flowers

As we move into fall and winter beyond, and the days get shorter, and face it, a little bit gloomier with each turn of the calendar page, we start to really crave something to brighten up our days. Something pretty that reminds us that the sun will come out again.

The Fall Blumen collection of necklaces from Liebling Designs is perfect—done in vintage fashion with different flowers and beads, they brighten up any outfit and make us think of sunnier days.

The Art of Compromise

When we moved in with our man, we got a lot of complaints about how there wasn’t enough of his stuff in the apartment. We can’t help it if his stuff included a Spuds Mackenzie lamp and life-sized poster of Randy Johnson.

In an effort to help him feel more at home in his home, we picked out these Montana-themed bottle-cap magnets to remind him of his glorious college days. Kate Grenier Designs has themes that fit any fridge—whatever your tastes.

The Year of the Scarf

One of our favorite fall/winter accessories, the scarf, is having its “moment in the sun” right now. It’s being worn year-round. So being the fashion mavens that we are, now that everyone is wearing scarves we have to kick it up a notch.

We are in love with the Scarflette from Marketa New York. This brilliant idea is warm and functional in cotton, leather and cashmere. They make our fall ensembles pop—and have everyone asking where we got them!
