  SEATTLE PICKS
life + style to you: every Friday
October 31st, 2008

We’ve always read that every woman needs a chic LBD to be stylish and well put together. Just ask Tim Gunn—the importance of a wardrobe staple like the Little Black Dress is unparalleled. But we never had one (horrifying, we know) until now.

Never mind the fact that we had to max out Ye Olde Credit Card to get it. It’s the perfect black column sheath dress that hits just at the knee and fits like a dream. In fact, it’s as comfortable as a pair of sweats—seriously. (We told you it was perfect!) And the icing on the cake is the keyhole back and the pearl and crystal-encrusted collar—swoon. Some may consider extolling the virtues of a new dress a sickness, but we think you, dear readers, will understand just where we are coming from.

p.s. Forward this issue of Seattle Picks to 5 friends and CC picks@seattlepicks.com, and you could win a $100 gift certificate to Rocco e Dante (see below) to spend on the perfect accessory for your LBD!

A Passion for Fashion

As women, we have always celebrated our endless fashion choices. But lately, with all the be-suited politicians running around, we’ve been a little jealous of the luscious colors and slimming look of the power tie. Though we can’t wear them ourselves, we can’t wait to buy a few for our boyfriend.

Unfortunately, as most of our gift-buying excursions go, we recently found ourselves purchasing more for ourselves than the boyfriend at Kuhlman. The tiny boutique in Belltown specializes in men’s suits and tailoring but we were quickly drawn to their women’s section. We loved the soft hats by Coal and collection of Joe’s Jeans. It was only after a half hour of trying on tops from Nice Collective and Mosley Tribes that we grabbed a tie or two and added them to our bounty.

While we still can’t get enough of those power ties, Kuhlman helped us realize one of the main reasons we love being women. Our love for men’s neckwear could never compete with our passion for kitten heels, pencil skirts and empire waists.

A-Picnicking We Will Go

One of our favorite things to do in the summer is to sit on the hilltop at Gasworks with our boyfriend, watching the sailboats and having a romantic sunset picnic. Realizing we only got to do that twice before fall had ruined all chances of more picnicking this year, we were way bummed.

Until, that is, we realized we could make our BF take us to an even fancier picnic indoors, at Picnic. Since we only recognized about five bottles of their worldly stock, we enjoyed choosing wines from the far reaches of Spain and Australia. But the best part was the food, oh the food! Classic French delights filled Picnic with a heavenly scent. We inhaled aged salami, bold bleu cheese, and a beautiful watermelon beet salad that was perfectly paired with the richness of the pork rillette.

And when we couldn’t decide between the scrumptious chicken salad with basil and pine nuts or the Picnic pâté, the Chef graciously offered samples—of everything. We had to be rolled home we were so stuffed.

Monster Mash

We happen to be chickens when it comes to scary stuff—we’ve been known to get a bit spooked by our own shadow. But just ’cause we’re scaredy cats doesn’t mean we don’t love monsters. Of course not the real kind (like what used to be under our beds when we were six) but cute and quirky, vector-styled, animé-ish monsters featured on silk-screened T-shirts.

Monster Art and Clothing in Ballard features an awesome array of tees, hoodies, hats, scarves, skirts, socks and accessories by local artists and designers, all with an emphasis on being easy on their customers' pocket books. And as if affordability and cuteness wasn’t enough, most of the lines are also created from sustainable products like up-cycled fibers and recycled materials. Even if the monster theme isn’t your dig, check out the chunky, refurbished patch-knitted skirts, which are perfectly cozy for the fall and winter season, and the shrine of socks (“regular” and naughty knee-highs).

Monster Art and Clothing is a ghoulishly great place to shop! (Sorry, we had to say it.)

No Bah-Humbugs This Year

We love the holiday season—and we mean love. Our house in the past few years has come to resemble a Clark Griswold-like creation. However, combined with our love for hosting parties, by the end of the holiday season, we are frazzled.

This year, we aren’t going to cut back on any hosting duties—instead, we are calling in the pros from JW Events,
with ten-plus years of event planning experience to handle the details and responsibility while we sit back and enjoy the
egg nog.

You Saucy Girl

Now that fall is here, our thoughts become more amorous. What's better than cozying up under a blanket with your main squeeze? And we definitely feel more romantic when the sun sets before 9 pm. Our clocks just work that way.

But to spark the fires burning within, we still need a little help. This seductively scented votive from the uber-hip lingerie house Agent Provocateur is just what we need to ignite the flames of loooove.
