  SEATTLE PICKS
life + style to you: every Friday
November 21st, 2008

We are completely nuts for the holiday season. There is something about this time of year that just makes us act like giddy, carefree, happy kids. At the moment, we are highly anticipating Thanksgiving next week. We can’t wait to have a perfectly good reason to stuff ourselves beyond imagination with turkey, stuffing, and of course, pumpkin pie! Not to mention, there are few things in this world that we love more than having all of our loved ones together in one place at the same time.

This year, we are thankful for the new H&M locations in Seattle (we love cheap accessories!), that our puppy is finally house-trained, that we can finally fit back into our favorite pair of wide-leg jeans after working out hard core for the past few months, and thankful we have the best job and most devoted readers ever! Thank you for being a part of Seattle Picks.

p.s. Because we are so thankful for you, dearest readers, a treat: Forward this issue of Seattle Picks to 5 friends and CC picks@seattlepicks.com, and you could win the Gracia bag from Luma NYC (see details below).

Dress Me Up

Last week on Oprah, the topic was organizing your home. Motivated by Oprah and the enthusiasm the guests had (after getting their homes de-cluttered), we spent all weekend reorganizing our closet. We were pleased with the outcome, but faced a new dilemma when the dust had settled. What were we doing with five pairs of skinny jeans and no cute cocktail dresses that actually fit?

We love to shop, but why oh why do we always seem to buy the same thing? With holiday events coming up, it was definitely time to get some help with our wardrobe! So we called the style gurus at Inspire Style. They walked us through the entire process like a fun and honest BFF, and put an end to “a closet full of clothes but nothing to wear.” They deciphered the perfect items for our bodies and our lifestyle, and saved us time and money.

Plus they helped us create smoking hot looks with those skinny jeans, and found us the purrrrfect LBD—sooo Audrey Hepburn. Call them today—end your closet trauma!

Designer Burgers

Aged denim, a good trench, a favorite cashmere sweater—classic wardrobe pieces. But as every girl knows, sometimes you gotta kick it up a notch with some designer goods. Same goes for dinner.

Lunchbox Laboratory does for burgers what Ferragamo does for your closet. Fold yourself into this pocket-sized down-and-dirty diner lined with old-school lunchboxes and vintage kitsch. Make sure to scour the massive hand-written menu prior to lining up so you don’t fold under the pressure. This is build-your-own-burger on steroids. With patty choices like “the dork” (a decadent combo of duck and pork), buffalo, and top sirloin; more than 12 cheeses; sauces and much, much more, you’ve got your work cut out for you. You even choose which salt you’d like on your taters!

When we just can’t make one more decision, we like to order one of the cleverly named (and tasty) specials already assembled for us. These aren’t your everyday burgers (or your everyday prices) but when you’re ready to splurge on some inspired Americana, head on over to the lab.

Stocking Stuffers

We always attempt to spreading out holiday shopping year-round—under the guise of being more gentle to our pocketbook. Each year brings a varying level of success, because we always spend more than we should, and keep half the stuff we buy for ourselves.

But this year we really think we’ve found the ticket with Asher Anson. We love a boutique that caters to women—and the men who love us. Let’s face it, the entire store should be able to fold up and fit in our stocking. We couldn’t get enough of the handmade jewelry by local designer Erin Jane, or perfect wallets (his and hers) from MAKR. We daydreamed about wearing a Christys hat and SHAE sweater while enjoying the downtown holiday lights. And we almost lost it when we imagined our BF in the ruggedly yummy navy French Connection sweater with toggle closures.

Before we did too much financial damage, we promised ourselves we’d head back soon to continue the holiday present-shopping. (By which, of course, we mean buying all the Joes Jeans that lined the walls!)

  Cocktail of the Week!

With the state of the economy these days, it’s easy to become panic-stricken about the way of the world—and it would be fair to do so. But the best way to deal with these uncertain times is with a dash of good old-fashioned humor. Tulio is right on the (ahem) money with their new menu of cocktails based on the financial state of things. With the looming holiday season, our favorite is the Offshore Account.

Offshore Account:
1 part Vanilla Absolut
1 part Grand Marnier
1 part Mango Puree

We like to add them all to a cocktail shaker, give it a whirl and then pour into a chilled martini glass. We feel richer already.

Tantalizing Textiles

With the arrival of winter, we are craving all things cozy and comfy. And now that we plan on staying inside next to the fireplace with a good book on chilly nights, we need to re-vamp some of our furniture.

Bainbridge Blues’ new 2008 collection of heirloom-quality textiles, designed here and made in Italy, are the perfect solution. Woven from 100% natural, environmentally friendly hemp fiber in classic, simple patterns, they’ve made our living room the most appealing winter hideout.

Yes, Lover!

We have a new love in our life. Her name is Miranda, and she is one of the prettiest bags we have ever met. We would even go so far as to say, look out Balenciaga, the new “It” bag has arrived.

Hand-painted and made of 100% leather calfskin, we just can’t seem to go anywhere without her. Someday, we plan on owning several bags from Luma NYC—with their distinctive and unique look, they are the opposite of ho-hum.

It’s Raining, It’s Pouring…

While we do tend to get annoyed when television shows and movies only show Seattle through the pouring rain, we have to admit, we do see a little bit more of that drizzle here than we would like to.

On the other hand, it gives us the chance to accessorize our outfits with cute Wellies and umbrellas. The fashionable umbrellas at umbrellas.net are so chic, we can’t choose just one—so we ordered several—bring on the downpour!
