  SEATTLE PICKS
life + style to you: every Friday
December 19th, 2008

This time of year always brings about an onslaught of holiday parties with
too much booze, stale Christmas cookies and endless rounds of Yankee Swap. Frankly, by the time January rolls around, we are so sick of the holiday parties
we could scream—and that is serious coming from us, because we love the holiday season.

Thankfully, this year our best friend is throwing a holiday party to really
switch things up. It’s such a fun and original idea—we are in awe—and even
more impressive, we are actually looking forward to this one! She is throwing a Holiday Soup Party, complete with several courses of gourmet soups to warm everyone up and get into the spirit. Knowing her superior cooking skills, we can’t wait to indulge—especially on the Gorgonzola Pear one. As an added bonus, the one who wears the ugliest Christmas sweater gets a prize! Sweater and soup? Totally retro-chic.

Be Your Own Top Chef

Hooray! The new season of “Top Chef” is finally here and we fully admit we are addicted. We love to watch each week as the culinary geniuses come up with a new, inspired dish (while cussing like sailors and sweating buckets). Unfortunately, in our own kitchen we just cuss and sweat and never actually produce anything inspired. We subscribe more to the one-pot not-so-wonderful type of cooking, so it’s time to work on our A game.

An “A” game requires that we properly outfit our kitchen—so it’s off to Dish It Up! in Magnolia. This wonder of a shop has gadgets galore along with drool-worthy Le Crueset cookware. And now that we look like we know what we’re doing, we are signing up for cooking classes. For not only do they carry kitchenware, they have a beautiful open space in the back (complete with those cooking-show televisions so you can look directly into the pot to see all the action) where top chefs hold intimate hands-on and demonstration classes.

If all goes well, look for us on “Top Chef” next season!

High Tea

We have a love/hate relationship with the rain. We love that it gives us time to catch up on old episodes of “Friends” that we haven’t seen in ages. We hate that it ruins every attempt to have good hair during the winter. We love that it allows us to buy multiple umbrellas and wellies to suit different moods. We hate that our pant legs get wet up to our kneecaps.

It’s pretty much been a 50/50 relationship, until recently when we found Remedy Tea in Capitol Hill. Walking inside is like a present to our nose—all the sweet and savory smells tickled their way to our schnoz. We were instantly attracted to the quiet, crisp atmosphere, and the wall of 150 organic teas that we could try either brewed by the pot on the spot, or packed loose-leaf to take home. The fresh eats prepared in their quaint kitchen were tantalizing, too, and the soothing music had us checking to make sure we hadn’t walked into a spa. We’re totally taking the girls here for Full Tea Service ASAP, although we might have to splurge for a tea smoothie.

We still find reasons to hate the rain, but Remedy Tea has totally tipped the scales.

Boum, Baby

We share an office with two brides-to-be, so we can’t help but share in their wedding planning successes and stresses. We knew it was time for professional help when we spent an entire afternoon scouring the Net in search of the perfect wedding favors. When we discovered Studio Boum, it was love at first sight.

Located in a stylish Fremont loft, Studio Boum is the next generation in event planning. For the bargain price of $95, you can purchase a six-month membership that gives you unlimited access to the studio’s bounty of resources—portfolios, magazines, computers, and a one-hour personal consultation with the Event Maven who creates your customized “Boum Sheet”—a guide to your best-matched vendors. Use the studio’s couches and conference tables to meet with these vendors, or to sit back and sip champagne with your bridal party while drawing up seating charts. Members also score invitations to exclusive events: cake tastings, fashion shows, groom etiquette night, etc.

If you’re planning a wedding—or any other event—say “I do!” to Studio Boum. It will be the beginning of a beautiful relationship.

  Drink of the Week!

Gourmet Soda Pop

With all of our hosting duties this holiday season, we’ve had an urge to shake things up and put something original on the table. Sure, we’ll have the regular wine, beer and cocktail options, but we’re adding DRY Soda to the mix. All-natural and lightly-sweetened, they even come with food-pairing recommendations. We’re going with the two newest flavors, Vanilla Bean (roast chicken and panna cotta) and Juniper Berry (quail and mussels). It’s sure to be a tasty holiday!

Butter Me Up

During the winter months, we tend to get that gross alligator-
skin thing going on. It’s on our elbows, hands, everywhere. Since we are pretty sure our boyfriend isn’t too keen on rubbing elbows with the Lizard Queen, we have started using the Whipped Body Butter from Winks and Co—made with actual crushed saltwater pearls.

It comes in every scent imaginable—including our favorites, Citrus Jasmine and Toasted Coconut Vanilla. It gives us dewy soft skin like he’s never felt before.

Problem-Solver

We are a little embarrassed to admit it, but we love those bizarre
products (usually seen on late-night infomercials) that are really like12 products in one. Like the broom that's also a vacuum and a microphone.

Lucky for us, we found an all-in-one product that is actually cool to love and incredibly useful. Bliss "Problem Salved" is a wonder balm in a stick for fixing chapping, chafing, blisters, unruly eyebrows, flyaway hairs and more. It's a dream come true!

Kiss and Makeup

We love to play with makeup, but have always struggled with
the more refined techniques of the smoky eye and the perfect application of bronzer. So, when we recently stumbled upon the Beauty in a Box sets from Face Time Cosmetics, we stocked up.

Each box has an array of beauty products and step-by-step lessons on how to apply the whole look—whether you
choose Sultry, Romantic or Stunning. We’re ready for our close-ups, Mr. deMille…
