life + style to you: every Friday
January 9th, 2009

We aren’t sure what to call it, but we have spent the past week in a state of total… hmm, how best to put it? Oh yeah, blaaaaah. Maybe it’s the dreary weather that prevents us from doing anything outside for fear of frostbite. Or maybe it’s the lull in exciting things coming our way now that the holidays are over—kind of like that feeling you got in high school after the Prom. You had looked forward to it and planned for it for so long, and then it happened, and afterward you were left wondering, “now what?”

In any case, we’re totally bored! We are totally over our usual weekend routines—we want to see something new, do something out of the ordinary. Perhaps we will visit a new restaurant and bar every weekend, or purchase a pair of earrings from a new shop we haven’t seen yet—anything to shake this mood. Pretty sure it’s detrimental to both our health and our boyfriend’s sanity. Anyone have any brilliant ideas?

Miracle on 2nd Street

When we were little, we believed in miracles. Our besties included Santa and The Tooth Fairy, and there was definitely a monster hiding in our closet. Now that we’ve grown up, we have a harder time believing in magic. We just don’t find spectacular things in the everyday anymore—even when we find the last dress in our size lying on the floor under a rack of puffer vests.

Imagine our surprise when we waltzed into Betty Lin to find Oscar, YSL and Dior, among other treasures. What were our Fairy Godmama Designers doing in a boutique near Pioneer Square? Why, they were waiting for us to take them all home—naturally! Betty Lin carries discounted treasures from
top fashion houses, in what can only be described as a shoe buffet meets a runway tornado. It was all we could do to keep ourselves from nabbing the DSquared2 patent platforms and the suede Dior clogs and the Pierre Hardy metallic peep toes. We made about a hundred mental notes to come back and rescue the rest of our new faves.

Who says miracles don’t happen in real life?

One Tequila, Two Tequila…

We still shudder when we think about our first experience with Tequila. We were eager, naïve college freshmen, and thanks to the encouragement of hollering, hormonal party animals, we were done with tequila for almost a decade of cocktails.

Thankfully, the Saint in Capitol Hill has showed us the finer
side of tequila dining. The Saint’s Alamo-style walls with antiqued iron-rod stain glass windows made us feel like we
were vacationing south of the border, and that made us feel adventurous—and daring enough to re-experience tequila.
For the more experienced palate, they serve Herradura Family Reserve and Don Julio Blanco, but for the dubious drinker, there’s the Fresas—fresh strawberries marinated in tequila,
and the Chihuahua—house-made agave syrup, tequila and grape juice (our personal favorite—both the miniature pup
and the drink).

And if “the sauce” isn’t your thing, try the other sauce—guacamole, carne asada, smoky mole, and the veggie enchiladas. So until our next vacation, we have The Saint to take us to the tropics. Is it May 5th yet?

A Pearl of Great Value

We’ve always wondered what it must be like to be a VIP—one
of the privileged ones. Sure, our dog thinks we’re VIP— but that’s about it. We dream of going into a club with our own private booth, complete with bottle service and personal server. Oh, to be one of the fortunate few behind the velvet ropes!

Dining at the brand-new restaurant Pearl, we finally got a small taste of what it was like to be “one of the cool kids.” The spacious eatery, serving contemporary Northwest cuisine, has a very urban, mod aesthetic to it. When we were shown to one of the booths with black organza curtains that could be pulled shut for privacy, we almost squealed in delight. We happily sipped our Silver Tequila Sour, made with sweet black vinegar and a lavender-salted rim, and noshed on the hands-down best Berkshire Pork Sliders we have ever had, followed by a drool-inducing Butterscotch Sundae with house-made butterscotch sauce. The whole experience was so posh—we truly felt like one of the glitterati.

Preppy Perfection

As teenagers, we dreamed about going away to a private boarding school, and how glamorous it would all be… right down to the cute plaid skirts and East Coast old-money heirs. And the pieces from Tomtom Jewelry would have been the perfect prepster accessories.

Unique and edgy with a preppy twist, we are in love with the Swallowed By The Sea necklace, handcrafted with navy ribbon and bronze, silver, enamel and brushed gold chains. Very Serena from “Gossip Girl”—natch!

Granny Panties Be Gone!

Amidst our New-Year-New-You fervor, we cleaned out the
old underwear drawer, and realized we were past due for
some new underpinnings—we had far too many “laundry day” panties. It was the perfect excuse to stock up on the ultra-feminine, luxurious, romantic pieces from SiBelle by Sibel Mesta.

We adore her Sweet Treats Gift Boxes with the 100% silk
chiffon sheer panties—not to mention the camis, garter skirts
and stretch silk bras. We love an underwear makeover—and so does our man!

Picture = A Thousand Words

We have been hunting for the perfect artwork to hang on the still blank walls of our bedroom. It has to be original (no posters of Van Gogh’s Starry Night) and it has to be an expression of our (great) taste. When we found the illustrations by Australian artist Kelly Smith, it was a match made in heaven.

Her prints are ethereal and heartbreakingly beautiful. They’re like fairytale high-fashion prints—and so girly! We can’t wait to adorn our room with her talent.

  Cocktail of the Week!

Let’s Keep the Party Going!

New Year’s Ever may have passed us by, but we are all for continuing the celebration right through the rest of the dreary (and cold) winter months. And we all know, there is no better way to celebrate and feel festive than champagne. Therefore,
for the remainder of this wet winter, you will be able to find us sipping on the Italian Champagne cocktails at Tulio downtown. Here is one of our favorites. Cheers!

Limone Champagne Cocktail
Limoncello
1 sugar cube
Prosecco

Add about an inch of limoncello to a champagne glass,
drop in one sugar cube, and top with Prosecco.
Happy New Year, indeed!
