life + style to you: every Friday
February 20th, 2009

Ever since “Confessions of a Shopaholic” came out, we have been wondering if we might really and truly be shopaholics ourselves. Q: Are you a shopaholic if you shop to cure boredom or a bad mood? (Yes and yes.) It occurred to us that we might have a problem after we had, once again, spent the afternoon at our favorite boutique, stimulating the economy with money we didn’t have.

Sure, we came home with some great stuff—an adorable plaid shirt we had been lusting after for months was finally on sale, and we couldn’t possibly pass it up! It may also be a tip-off that we have problems since we seem to spend the bulk of our salary on clothing, and yet we still have nothing cute to wear. Well, so be it—we’re Seattle Picks, and we’re shopaholics.

p.s. We are just weeks away from Seattle Picks’ 100th Issue, and in honor of the blessed event, we have incredible giveaways lined up for our loyal readers. Starting with this week… forward Seattle Picks to 5 of your friends and CC picks@SeattlePicks.com, and you could win a $50 gift card to Poppy or a $20 gift certificate to Show Pony!!!

A Whole Lot of Sol

We Seattle gals know that come these dreary January and February months (especially ones filled with five-foot snow drifts and pearl-sized hail) we are in desperate need of some sun! We long for white sandy beaches, sexy oiled-up cabana boys, fruity cocktails with pretty umbrellas, and a tan that will not wash off in 5–7 days.

We might not be making it to Mexico, but at least we can get a little flavor of Sol at Casita International. Walking by, we just couldn’t resist their eclectic window displays. They have everything from folk-art pieces to unique jewelry made by local artists, plus kitschy yet retro-fabulous oil drop cloths in eye-catching prints. We snatched up the cutest pair of hand-knit baby booties for a coworker’s new bambino, as well as a delicious-smelling candle for ourselves. And because so many of the things are made by hand, it’s hard to find any two things that are alike.

One thing is for sure… this little treasure trove has definitely captured our corazón.

Locks of Luxury

Yes, we’ve all seen those commercials with models walking the streets with bouncing, luminous, fantasy hair. We used to think that such a thing was only for the rich and famous—an exclusive and inaccessible state of hair and quality of life… until we stepped out of the newest designer hair salon in Seattle, and we became that girl.

Sassoon Salon, suitably located downtown next to Butch Blum and Louis Vuitton, is the salon for hair purists and fashion enthusiasts. Featuring “collections” in bespoke cuts and colors, as influenced by themes—shapes, lines and lighting—from fashion designers like Claire McCardell and the photography of Lillian Bassman, Sassoon draws its inspiration from draped cashmere and the textures and cuts of silk fabric. It’s easy to get intimidated by a salon that hosts teams of specialists for consultations who use words like “tailoring” instead of “cut,” and “beams” to imply “highlight” —especially when they have English accents like Tabitha Coffey from “Salon Takeover.”

Though they’re so NYC-chic, Sassoon is totally Seattle-centric by creating styles that are achievable at home, and “style to wear” for a rainy/windy/sometimes snowy Seattle. Ooh. La la.

Sinfully Delicious

If we could get away with it, we would eat chocolate cake for breakfast, and follow every meal with dessert—we are true dessert aficionados. But we can’t quite think of anything better than cheesecake, can you? There are chocolate-y rich brownies, deliciously chewy chocolate-chip cookies, tasty pies with flaky crusts (excuse us while we wipe the drool off our keyboards), but there is nothing like a decadently creamy cheesecake

So naturally, our new favorite place to indulge is The Confectional in the Pike Place Market—offering not only mini cheesecakes but cheesecake truffles—and all made with only the finest ingredients. Yes, that’s right, bite-sized balls of top-notch, mouth-watering, delectable cheesecake dipped in Guittard dark chocolate. Flavors include mochaccino, cookies and mint chocolate, peanut butter, and their most popular, Seattle New York-style—but most notable to us was the quadruple chocolate (of course) and raspberry white chocolate.

If there was ever a place to ditch your diet plans and satisfy your sweet tooth, this it. Being bad never felt so good.

Bottle It Up

In college, we carried a Nalgene bottle everywhere we went—it was totally “in” back then, we swear. Now that we’re workin’ gals, it’s a little too granola for our tastes—it just doesn’t match our stilettos and pencil skirts.

Luckily, there’s a fashionable alternative—the reusable glass bottle with a ceramic swing top lid by Love Bottle. They can be personalized with stickers, bands for grip and color, and you can even write directly on the bottle to express yourself. We’re always evolving!

Read My Lips

When we were in middle school, a mood ring was pretty much the coolest accessory a girl could rock. We had several, and we lived and died by the wisdom of the mood ring—convinced that it always told the truth.

So we were delighted to stumble upon the Mood Swing lip gloss from Too Faced. Ranging from clear to a deep fuschia, it gives us a more “grown up” chance to wear our emotions on our sleeve—er, lips.

Remember to Breathe

We admit that we can sometimes be kind of a freak. From time to time, we have major meltdowns over minor happenings. Like throwing clothes all over the place when we can’t find our favorite jeans, or flipping out when we encounter a sticky drawer that won't open.

In times like these, we could benefit from having this poster from sfgirlbybay—reminding us to Keep Calm and Carry On—a mantra we definitely need to practice.
