March 6th, 2009
This week we had a momentary flash of domestic-ness, when we decided on a whim to whip up a batch of white chocolate hazelnut cupcakes with triple chocolate frosting—from scratch. Amazingly, they turned out quite delicious, and we scarfed down two or three before we finally gave the rest away. Our theory on baking regularly is that it’s fun and fabulous—as long as you don’t have to keep the fruits of your labor. That’s a recipe for bigger jeans.
And speaking of baking—this week we stumbled across a hilariously brilliant new blog—Cake Wrecks—that had us rolling with laughter. It’s filled with snarky comments and pictures of professional cakes that have gone horribly and hilariously wrong, and the hours of entertainment are never-ending. Our personal favorite is the Valentine’s Day heart that says “Huge Me” as opposed to “hug” me. Ha!
p.s. Only one more week to go before our 100th issue, and you know what that means—more giveaways! Forward Seattle Picks to 5 or more friends and CC picks@SeattlePicks.com, and you could win a $25 gift card to Amy Bengston Jewelry or a $50 gift certificate to Katie Kay! |

Land of the Free
Just the other day when we were walking home we noticed a glorious little thing—it wasn’t dark at 5 pm! Hallelujah, that must mean that spring is almost here! Get ready to set your clocks back, get a spring-fling crush and oh yeah, that thing we’ve been waiting for all year long—shopping for your spring and summer wardrobe. It’s never too early to start, we say.
Brought to you by the good people from Urban Outfitters (love them), Free People is bringing on the sweetness of spring with their signature touch of bohemian playfulness. Tie-dyed soft pastels mixed with electric pinks, greens and oranges on drapey crepe fabric totally capture that springtime spirit. And their baggy knits, beaded headbands and faded cut-offs make our little hearts pitter patter! We can see it now—strolling down Pike Street, peasant skirt blowing in the breeze, wearing trendy Wayfarer sunglasses and a fringed scarf, coffee in hand. Springtime in Seattle is complete bliss—especially when you have the latest fashions.
Now if it would only stop snowing so we could work on our tan!

It’s Always Spring Here
The crocuses are popping up and that’s what we choose to focus on—not the constant threat of hail, snow and sleet. The harbingers of spring are out there, waiting for their day in the sun, and soon spring’s crowning glory (cherry blossoms!) will burst forth. Punxsutawney Phil can stuff it because we just can’t wait anymore.
So we sought out a little indoor spring at Moshi Moshi Sushi to escape the madness. It’s fresh, its fun and it’s delicious! Step inside and sit beneath the electric cherry tree (8000 LED lights—always in bloom), sip your sake and take a chance on the omakase (chef’s choice) —you won’t be sorry. Recently, we dined on a wonderful array of sashimi and nigiri, all delightfully fresh (the aji tataki was to die for). If you don’t have time for dinner, don’t miss the grilled oysters in heavenly miso cream. We were nervous (not being oyster connoisseurs) but now we are oyster converts. And don’t forget the specialty cocktails!
Spring has sprung, ladies and gentlemen ... at least at one Seattle restaurant.

Leaving the Nest
After about two years in our current apartment (our first without roomies), it’s starting to feel like home—mostly because we finally put up curtains in the living room and found the perfect throw pillows to tie the room together. We find we enjoy being home a lot more these days, and are really appreciating having our own place (and no, that does not make us old).
Finally, with a home to call our own, we were happy to hear that Seattle’s Blackbird Tees now has a nest of its own in Flock, a brick-and-mortar storefront in Greenlake, home to their entire Talk Shirty to Me collection of cheeky-chic hand-illustrated tees, as well as printed bags and onesies for the lil’ chicks. Our fave is the art nouveau-esque “Classic Blackbird” baseball tee, but we like everything this itty-bitty shop has to offer, including handmade jewelry and accessories made by local artists.
Migrate on over to check ’em out. And don’t forget to mention that Seattle Picks sent you.

Size Really Does Matter
Oftentimes, when we ask someone to hand us our purse, they groan under the strain of lifting it. We can’t help it—we carry our lives around with us. As former Girl Scouts, we like to always be prepared. Books, water bottles, makeup, etc.
Which is why we love this canvas bag from Lomography. Perfect for compulsive hoarders, it comes in two sizes: large and extra large. It’s the perfect fit for us and all our junk!

Paris, J’taime
We’ve always dreamed of visiting Paris in the springtime—strolling hand in hand with a sexy Frenchman under the cherry blossoms and sipping coffee at a sidewalk table along the Seine. It’s the stuff that dreams are made of, and so is this charming, girly necklace from Blue Moss.
Made entirely from found and vintage items, we love the vintage pocketwatch face—reminding us that we’ll make it to the Eiffel Tower someday!

All Lathered Up
As bath and body product junkies, we have cupboards overflowing with products for every occasion. Recently we ran across a product from Seattle-based Red Leaf that will never find its way to the back of a drawer—it’s just that good.
Their soap and shave cube, made with coconut oil and glycerin, it's easy to hold, and such a welcome change from messy shaving foam. Plus, it comes in yummy scents like plumeria, lavender, basil lime and orange sherbet!

Cocktail of the Week! |

|

Absinthe is the hottest new thing in cocktails these days, with absinthe bars and drinks popping up all over Seattle. We admit we have been dying to try it, but have been a little apprehensive – what with all the rumors about “The Green Fairy” and her mythical properties. But, when we heard about the new absinthe cocktails at Morton’s we knew it was time – and rushed right over to sample the uniquely named, Monkey Gland. You know you wanna try it!
Monkey Gland
2oz Bombay Gin
1oz Orange Juice
1/2oz Grenadine
1/4oz Absinthe
Pour all ingredients into a Boston Shaker. Add ice and shake 15 times. Strain into a martini glass and garnish with an orange twist.
