  SEATTLE PICKS
life + style to you: every Friday
April 10th, 2009

We’re adults—we pay our bills on time, we have a steady job, we have pets we take care of, we make smart, grown-up decisions (like paying our rent before we buy the new Tory Burch sandals). Well, most of the time, anyway. But there is one thing that never fails to make us feel like a kid... we hate staying home alone at night.

Especially for long periods of time, like when our boyfriend goes on week-long business trips or our roommate goes on vacation. We are completely ridiculous about it. We end up checking every nook, cranny and closet for scary attackers at least twice before we climb into bed, seriously consider sleeping with a big knife under our pillow for protection (and would do so if we weren’t afraid we would end up hurting ourselves with it), and finally, we resort to sleeping with the lights and television on. We only manage to catch a few winks of sleep between all the worrying and jumping up to check out every little noise we hear. It’s exhausting to be a grown-up (a scaredy-cat grown-up, that is).

Going Green—in Style

We’ve been feeling a little conflicted lately… but just a little. With all this talk about going green, we look down at our espadrilles and wonder if we should have searched for some that were made with natural dyes. Then we come back to our senses and realize there’s no way we could live without our latest splurge—natural or not, the bright blue color makes us giddy.

Then we found Eurostyle Your Life. This incredible shop tucked near the Fremont Bridge offers handcrafted designer goods from all over Europe, and most are more than just a tad “environmentally friendly.” We were immediately drawn to a collection of dark totes, and we were delighted find out they were made of inner tubes—perfect for Seattle rain. Next we discovered tiny sweaters knit by farmers’ wives in Switzerland, designer wool slippers from France, and felted placemats that will look great at our next dinner party—in hot pink. To top it all off, we were offered freshly brewed espresso as soon as we entered. Bonjour, indeed!

Not only are we now euro-chic, but we can stop feeling guilty about our little espadrilles.

Get Your Glam On

After months of bundling up, staying warm, and piling on the layers, we almost forgot what our skin looked like (hint: it’s nearly translucent from lack of sun). But with the weather beginning to ease up a bit, our skin is slowly coming out of hibernation. Unfortunately, that’s when we realize the neglect and anguish we’ve caused our poor epidermis.

Knowing we weren’t the only ones in town with this ailment, we called up our besties and a day of beauty ensued… in the comfort of our own home. When you have ants, you call the exterminator; for ghosts, you call the Ghostbusters; and when you have scaly, pasty skin, you call MOD Beauty Squad. The well-educated and well-equipped women of MOD Beauty Squad pulled up and started rollin’ in the fabulousness. They gave us facials, brow-shaping and spray tans (oh my!) while we caught up and melted away the winter blahs. The best part was, the more girlfriends we invited over, the easier it was on our pocketbooks.

Now we just need an excuse for the rest of the seasons…

Saving Grace

Frothy wedding dresses, signature cocktails, ring-bearer pillows and major anxiety—yes, its wedding (planning) season. Our cousin is getting married and her to-do list is longer than a 10-year-old’s for Santa… plus her stress level is immeasurable!

Luckily, she chose Poppies Floral and blithely crossed flowers off the list. We were happy to tag along to the mod little shop in Fremont. We are in love with their fabulous floral arrangements with unusual style. They work with any budget and adore color and texture—perfect for the big day. Not only can they infuse an event with elegance or whimsy, Poppies Floral carries the Sweet Petula Bath & Body line (to die for), fun candles and precious Egg Press cards, and on a recent visit we couldn’t resist the adorable (and affordable) little terrariums.

Poppies Floral strives to have items under $20 available for the spontaneous shopper—so do pop in! Buy yourself (or someone else) a little charm and grace to make their lives just a little more bright and beautiful.

Make Me Up

As complete and total product junkies, we have quite the collection of makeup. We love it all, from colored mascara to eye-shadow in every color of the rainbow—not to mention the million and one lip glosses we own.

So naturally, we need quite a few pretty containers for our treasures, and the makeup bags from Seattle-based designer Emilie Sloan are to die for. In several pretty patterns, the water-resistant cotton bags are stylish and durable—perfect for our vast collection of paint.

Breathe Deep

Have you ever noticed that every home has a distinct smell all its own (some better than others)? We take pride in having people walk into our home, breathe deeply, and exclaim “it smells great in here!”

Our secret isn’t Glah-day—it’s the fragrance diffusers from local company ilio. In four scent categories: clear, crisp, bright and still, they are deliciously subtle, ranging from D’Anjou Pear and Flower Shop to Amber Warmth and Lemon Drops. We’re such devoted customers that we think they should name one after us.

Our Latest “Go To”

You know what’s frustrating? Shopping in the springtime in Seattle. The boutiques are chock-full of cute tank tops, skirts and dresses, but it’s still cold and rainy—so we can’t wear any of our new purchases for a while.

Well, we solved that little problem—ha! —with the Fairweather shirt from Makool. In lightweight cotton, this is the button-down shirt with a modern twist—oversized pockets, a cowl neck and big buttons. Add a little cardi, and we don’t have to wait for July to flaunt this baby!
