life + style to you: every Friday

Transitioning from winter to spring is never easy. Suddenly, after months of hibernating beneath layers and generous sweaters, you have to start working out and shaving your legs every day… it’s a chore! So last week we decided to lighten our personal grooming load and get some pre-summer waxing done.

We’ve done it before—it’s gone off without a hitch, and a minimal amount of pain. This time? Not so much. We went in for our regular bikini wax, and somewhere along the line, wires were crossed and messages misconstrued—in short, we came out... ahem… bald. We knew it was taking longer than usual, but we were trying to distract ourselves from the task at hand (pun intended) and must not have not been paying close enough attention—until those last attention-grabbing rips. Hello! But by then, it was too late. We became a Brazilian Bombshell. And can we just say—ouch.

Leaving on a Jet Plane

We’re all about travel these days ... well, dreaming about travel that is. We don’t know if you’ve heard about this whole economic downturn thing, but it has us turning down a few extracurricular activities—including fun trips abroad.

Luckily, we can head on over to KOBO at Higo in the International District and get a taste of old Japan and contemporary Japan—and even take some home with us (everyone needs souvenirs). KOBO is eclecticism at its very best. The space is filled to the brim with local and international designers’ housewares, textiles, art and so much more. On a recent visit we had to have one of KOBO’s own graphic tees as well as a delicious enamel pendant by Tanya Owens. And this month is the opening of the museum wall celebrating the centennial of the original Higo Variety Store (whose space KOBO now occupies).

Now we’re off to measure the living room wall to see which Ken Taya Japanese pop art print (say that three times fast) will best fit above the couch. Thank goodness we don’t have to stuff it in our carry-on.

Biker Babes

Last week we went to our first roller derby, and from the roller girl’s costumes and retro-dos in the rink (yes, they still have rockin’ hair under their helmets) to the vintage cars and motorcycles in the lot, we were charmed by the classic cuteness of the 1950’s—not to mention the bad-ass babes in the rink.

So where do all these burlesque and biker babes go to get their fashion haircuts and Betty Boop-inspired pin-curls? They go to one of Seattle’s hippest hair salons, Helmet Head.
Set in the main strip of Georgetown, Helmet Head features men’s and women’s cuts, color, facials, nails and waxing services by some of the coolest stylists in the city. The Helmet Head staff is fun and friendly, sporting sassy ’dos and old-school tattoos. They even blow kisses to their little pugs (yes, pooches are allowed in the salon) in between styling. And the owner parks her motorcycle in the storefront… does it get any cooler?

From Wendy O’Williams ’hawks to Betty Page bangs, Helmet Head has your hotness covered. Now, can I get a milkshake with that twist, Toots?

Sugar Pie, Honey Bun

We’re not sure if it’s the semi-decent weather creeping in or just plain old spring fever, but we can’t stop eating sweets and we don’t even have a sweet tooth—or at least we didn’t use to have one. We’re still denying its existence, but when it starts nagging us every day around 4 pm, we just can’t ignore it anymore.

Lucky for us (but unlucky for our backsides) we found the pastry-perfect bakery, Sugar, a mere four blocks from our condo. We love their friendly staff, great art (for sale), perky pink-striped walls, and of course all the sweets waiting for us in the cases. We ordered this great bag of fresh baked cookies that were called something like “Economic Crunch Cookies”—we would’ve remembered the name if we weren’t busy unhinging our jaw and dumping them down our throat. We promise (to try) to read the label before inhaling next time. Also on our list for the next visit: one of their handmade sack lunches, the yummy tartlets, and a ham and cheese baby brioche.

We’re getting fat and happy just thinking about them!

Playing Peek-a-Boo

Our go-to LBD is getting a little boring—okay, a lot—but we know the way to survive hard economic times is to rework old outfits to make new ones. Having run out of new accessory options, we were delighted to find Your Slip is Showing.

They carry embellished slips in different lengths that are meant to be seen beneath your dress or skirt for a whole new look. From pleated organza to chiffon rosettes and beaded silk, our LBD is fun and flirty once again.

Represent!

NYC. LA. And now—Seattle. That’s right; Ork Posters has officially taken on Seattle’s patchwork of neighborhoods and we think the results are 100% wall-worthy.

From Phinney Ridge to Georgetown, every ’hood is reflected—even the teensy-tiniest. And in colors from “grunge brown” to “rainy day blue,” you’re sure to find one to complement existing décor. Natives or no, Seattleites love their hometown; who could ask for a better way to showcase our civic pride?

Pretty in Pink

Even as grown ladies, we sometimes find ourselves being drawn to frilly, pink, ultra-girly things, from clothing to home décor. So what if our five-year-old niece shares our taste sometimes? We own our girly-ness!

Our latest girly find is this necklace from dejarnette, with three layers of pleated pink tulle ruffles on a chunky antique silver chain. Oh-so-delicious. We’re picturing it with a distressed leather biker jacket—you know, just to maintain our street cred.
