life + style to you: every Friday
May 22nd, 2009

We’ve been working our keyboard-pounding fingers to the bone all year long, and now that the sun is finally starting to rear its bright and shiny face, we’re due some quality R&R time. Besides, our Vitamin D stores were getting dangerously low, so really, it’s crucial to our health that we hit the beach. Ideally, we would love to be hob-nobbing on the beach in Cannes right now with Brad and Angelina, but since that might be a tiny bit too much for our pocketbooks at the moment, we’ll gladly take a Washington beach complete with campfires, beach bikes and kite flying. There really is something just so wholesome and comforting about a beach vacay in the Pacific Northwest – plus you don’t have to worry about any Euro-trash topless sunbathers or endlessly crowded beaches where you can’t even throw a stick for your pup. So bring on Memorial Day weekend, s’mores, cozy beach cottages and please, oh please, plenty of sunshine!

p.s. If you’re in the mood for endless beaches, communal firesides and fully furnished, gorgeous beach cottages, then Seabrook on Washington’s coast is the place for you. Check out their special offer in our Hip Happenings this week, and as if one special offer wasn’t enough, Seabrook is offering a Buy 1 Get 1 free special available to Seattle Picks readers for use prior to June 30th. Just call 1.877.779.9990 and use the promo code "Seattle Picks." We know how to hook you up!

Bringing the Hawtness

Our mothers always told us that true friendship is about loving and respecting our buds for who they are, not what they are. And as we all know, mothers are usually always right (except when it comes to our boyfriends).

For Nuvo Moda on 1st, it’s all about the what and not the who, and that goes for shoes, denim and cute cocktail dresses. Their philosophy is all about forgetting what’s super-trendy, and focusing on what always looks hot. It’s not all the big brand names, because when it comes down to it, it’s about the “money shot” in the mirror—not what the tag says. That’s not to say you won’t find popular lines here too, you’ll just know that they were hand-selected by their friendly personal stylists because it looks good. And the seasonal shoes, denim and cocktail lines are all selected to go together in perfect cohesion —you can easily find complementary pieces to make an entire look for Saturday night.

Look out, Seattle—things are about to get steamy around here!

Feeling a Little Sassy

With summer lurking just around the corner, our workout routine needs a serious kick in the pants. But we’ve been feeling a little bit more than disenchanted with the gym recently. The treadmill bores us, spinning classes make our quads too big for our skinny jeans, and we are so not coordinated enough for those step-cardio classes.

Lucky us, a friend let us in on the secret that is Sassy Fit—a mobile personal training company that will come train you in your home, office or nearby park. They are the perfect alternative to our boring and impersonal gym routine, and their customized workouts from a highly trained staff of certified personal trainers whipped us into shape fast. Their workouts are modeled after the highly coveted celebrity workouts of Cameron Diaz and Jessica Alba—need we say more? We love their Celebrity Boot Camp program which is great for losing a few pounds right before a big event, and the Sassy Pants program which gets your rear in gear.

We’ve never had a more enjoyable experience working out—and that says a lot, because working out is rarely fun for us.

Flirt Skirt

Spring has finally sprung in this burg (and not a moment too soon). We were so sick of the cold and the rain—and the snow on April Fool's Day—but let's not wallow. Anyhoo, on a fleeting, sunny spring day we were indulging in one of our favorite weekend activities—browsing the Ballard Farmer’s Market—and stumbled upon a stall stuffed with über-cute skirts. Perfect for the upcoming sunny weather (we’re trying to will it into reality).

Marmalade Originals specializes in fabulous, A-line, bias-cut skirts in small runs of hip fabrics. Translation: forgiving fit, and you won’t see a billion gals out there wearing your skirt. Their philosophy is that everyone deserves something beautiful and comfortable—everyone! So if you don’t see your size in your fabric choice, just ask and you can get one custom made with no extra charge for larger sizes. Marmalade Originals will even do skirt parties in your home. We can’t wait to plan one—any excuse for a party.

So get on out there and show a little leg (even if it is still blindingly white). Gotta start somewhere!

Pump You Up

With our renewed commitment to working out, we also have to revolutionize our eating habits (no more ice cream for dinner). That means finding a good nutrition bar to nosh on before our sweat sessions.

We can’t handle the Golds-Gym-body-builder bars, so for us it’s a Zing Nutritional Bar or nothing! All natural, and developed by practicing nutritionists, they’re full of healthy fats and high-quality protein. The best part? The actually taste good—it’s a wonder!

We’ll Take Two, Please!

As true Seattle Picks gals, we do love to be original and one-of-a-kind, but we confess, we also have our moments where we just want to carry that “It” bag that all the starlets and socialites have (we blame the influence of Us Weekly).

Our solution is to create our own “It” bag phenomenon, and the perfect candidate is the handcrafted Okinawa bag from Valhalla Brooklyn. Made in ultra-soft lambskin in colors like bright turquoise, we’re nominating it as our own personal “It” bag of the summer.

The Dark Side

We have a pair of J Brand denim skinnies that are so dark, it dyes our fingers just putting them on. In other words, they’re perfection. But, we have lost too many perfectly dark-washed denim jeans to fading in our washing machine, so this time we aren’t taking any chances.

We’re investing in the French Lanvender Dark Wash from Caldrea. It has a special enzyme that helps extend the color of your denim jeans. It’s our deepest darkest desire.

Below the Belt

We love the ACT Theatre because they’re constantly staging shows that make us think while keeping us thoroughly entertained. Their latest show, “Below the Belt,” a skewering of corporate culture starring acclaimed actor Judd Hirsch, is like an episode of “The Office” crossed with Samuel Beckett—darkly funny, and a great way to spend an evening.

What: “Below the Belt” at ACT Theatre
When: Friday, May 22–Sunday, June 21
Where: 700 Union St.
Call: 206.292.7660
Cost: Students: $10, 25 years or younger: $15,
Adults: $37.50 and up

Here’s to the bride!
