  SEATTLE PICKS
life + style to you: every Friday
May 29th, 2009

We have come to the somewhat unnerving realization that we may love our little furry pug companion beyond what most people would call “normal.” Our little egg-roll with an attitude got into her first (and let’s hope, last) altercation with another dog this past weekend and we’re pretty sure that the whole ordeal caused us to suffer a mini heart-attack – for reals. The problem is, our little one has a total Napolean complex in the worst kind of way. She challenges the big dogs and even after they walk away, she is still gunning for a piece. She is like that short guy at the bar that gets totally drunk and then thinks he can take on everyone for a fight and win.

When we finally pried the two dogs apart, we spent the rest of the day catering to our little one and asking her to never visit that big dog park in the sky because seriously, we may not survive it. Sometimes we are convinced that this little bundle of fat rolls is the love of our life – easy to do when you are single yet again – not to mention, a dog’s love is always unconditional. We realize not everyone may understand this love for our canine, and that we may treat her like our child a little too often, but hey, she’s a gal's best friend!

Rubber Baby Buggy Bumpers

Now that summer is definitely on its way, and the sunshine has basically obliterated any remembrance of rain (shhhh! Don’t ruin it for us), we seem to forget that our wallet isn’t a bottomless Mary Poppins bag—as much as we wish it were. But as we always say, “Ignorance is bliss!” Read: we’ll just keep spending.

Speaking of spending, with the arrival of our brand new baby nephew, we know just what to buy (everything, duh!), and just the place to find it. Buggy on Beacon Hill is bursting with beautiful buys for babies. What we love about Buggy is that they carry fresh, seasonal clothes alongside sweet, hand-picked vintage items. The combo of something old with something new helped us pull together a truly unique present for the new little guy. Plus, the owners have tiny tots themselves, so they know the importance of durable wares that’ll withstand the mud puddles and grass stains for years to come.

Make sure to check out their moving sale through the end of this month—Buggy will soon be moving to 34th Avenue in Madrona!

Let Them Eat Cake

We’re all about the cupcake explosion, and we’re not gonna feel bad about it. Why should we? It’s a miniature cake—not a whole one, and everyone deserves a little treat here and there. And when cupcakes combine with delicious, gourmet ingredients like Italian buttercream (not that Crisco junk we use when we slap together our own cupcake catastrophes) and charity, we definitely don’t feel bad—we feel hungry.

Yellow Leaf Cupcakes is the newest gourmet cupcake joint to hit Seattle, and in true Seattle form, their products are all carefully handcrafted with an emphasis on cupcake Epicureanism. They have more than 35 kinds of cupcakes and 20 bagged and loose-leaf teas for pairing with your fluffy frosted selection. Get the root beer “Yellow Heart” cupcake and $1.00 of your purchase will be donated to the Children’s Hospital of Seattle. Another reason not to feel guilty: their almost 100% compostable products, like the to-go coffee mugs that are biodegradable and decomposable in landfills within 1–5 years.

Cupcakes and eco-consciousness—what a delicious combination!

Kiss Bad Hair Days Goodbye

While we are true fashionistas, we don’t always love to be slaves to style. Don’t get us wrong, looking good is on the top of our list, but sometimes we want easy, breezy, effortless styles that just look like they took hours. So when we heard about a new treatment that creates sleek and soft hair—without spending hours styling it—we just had to share.

When we first told our guy we were heading to the salon for a new treatment—the Brazilian blowout—he wondered if we’d come back bald. We laughed at him and headed off to Robert Leonard, knowing he’d be pleased with the results. Our stylist washed, treated, dried and flat-ironed our hair, and the next time we washed it ourselves, we styled it in record time and were delighted with the sleek smoothness of our tresses. The treatment works best for those who have frizzy or damaged hair and lasts 2–4 months, so you’ll be saving time and looking great all summer long.

Hurry, before all the other fashionistas in town find out about it and snag all the openings!

Big Apple Beauty

The last time we dug into our makeup stash we nearly fell asleep from sheer boredom. Nothing but a sea of safe neutrals as far as the eye could see—yawn! So when we managed to snag some shadow in a luxe shade of green from Dex, we were stoked.

Their ultra-bold mineral shadows are loaded with anti-aging technology, are 100% paraben-free, and just what we need to add a little spring-zing to our faces.

Sweet Sarah

We have a knack for spotting the next big thing before most other people do. Yet somehow, our friends never listen to us—until someone else tells them later, and they come back and tell us about their new find that was ours to begin with!

Well, listen up—we found the latest independent designer darling and we’re thinking she’s Vogue material. Sarah Seven makes incredibly romantic, feminine dresses with cascading ruffles and perfect pleats, and naturally, we want everything she makes. Next big thing—called it.

Sign Language

No one will argue with the fact that Carrie Bradshaw was a trend-setter. Hello, the Carrie necklace, anyone? But, we’d bet money on the fact that were she a real person, she would have upgraded to one of Lorena Barrezueta’s Manual Communication Pendants.

These porcelain pendants come in black or white with the sign-language alphabet and different signs on them—totes original. We’re torn between the one with the sign for love and the thumbs up. Hmm…what would Carrie pick?
