June 5th, 2009
Well, the unthinkable has happened—we are single yet again. And everyone knows what that means—the bad dates are back, people. Reviewing our past dating history, let’s just say we are less than enthusiastic about beginning the whole process over again. We have had so many dating disasters in our young-adult lives that we are actually thinking about writing a little book about our adventures. Just think of all the winners we could fill the pages with!
Like the guy who showed up for our second date in grungy sweatpants filled with holes, looking like a total scrub and thought nothing of it. Seriously? That should have been saved until we were at least a few months in… or never. Or the guy who took us to his frat dance in college (where we knew no one but him, mind you) and proceeded to spend the night getting sick in the bathroom or passed out from too much drinky-drinky on the floor. And that’s just the beginning of the list—no wonder we are feeling less than inspired to try dating again. Perhaps someone could just drop Prince Charming on our doorstep? Please? We’re just not sure our little hearts can handle one more disappointment. |

Boys Club No Longer
As you all know, we take the adornments with which we decorate ourselves very seriously and we don’t apologize for it—it’s a way of life for us. Obviously then, we can't very well tote with us a dude donned in nothing but dull duds. So on one of our frequent perusals of male-minded shops, we stopped by one of our favorite man-tastic digs, Blackbird.
Ballard's best male boutique never ceases to please. But this time, to our delight, we were introduced to Birgitta, Blackbird's brand new female boutique! Woot woot. Floating above the men's floor in an oh-so-modern loft, we were welcomed with a host of stunning flats, fresh spring trenches and Asian-inspired ensembles. In one corner we even found an imported collection of plates, cups and saucers painted with the least expected meal companions—snakes and spiders! We appreciated the inventiveness, but chose to continue shopping through their new makeup line and sunglasses instead.
We were quite satisfied by the pleasant marriage of interests; our beaus had their own floor of fashionable fare, and our shopping wasn't distracted by the musings of a bored boyfriend.

Get Serious
We adore Tom Douglas. We love his spice rubs, cookbooks and his big, fuzzy bear personality. We even love his beard—and we’re not facial-hair kind of people. In any case, we’ve never been disappointed with any of his many Seattle restaurants. Perhaps we should say empire? The man is unstoppable!
We knew he’d mastered seafood, the grill and (of course) coconut cream pie, and now he’s even proved his pizza prowess with Serious Pie. You won’t find your mama’s plain pepperoni pizza here, but you will find a short list of perfectly picked topping combos like roasted chanterelles with truffle cheese—an amazing mix of savory/salty goodness. Perhaps you’re in the mood for Penn Cove clams, house pancetta and lemon thyme? Sounds crazy, we know, but it totally works. And don’t even get us started on the yummy, bubbly, caramelized-in-a-brick-oven crust. It’s truly chewy perfection and the price ain’t bad either. Last visit we shared a few pies, salads and drinks with friends and still had some moolah left over for a gooey dessert.
Tom, you had us at hello.

Genie in a Bottle
We recently joined a book club with a bunch of our girlfriends, and we’re really loving the variety. Each month we read a classic, and gab about it (and our lives). Our latest pick made us crave the mystery and glam of both old Hollywood style as well as the Middle and Far East. It makes us wish we could take a Morrocan vacation—complete, of course, with our own personal staff of chefs, masseuses and hotties with palm fronds to keep us cool and feed us grapes in the shade.
Unfortunately, we’re about $20K short of that vacation, so with impending (dare we say) summer weather upon us, we headed over to Harem on Capitol Hill to recreate our own mystical Far East lounge for those hot summer nights. We picked up some beautiful scarves for the room and ourselves, as well as a couple intricate rugs and throw pillows for the full lounge effect. We had to stop ourselves from cleaning out their stock of unique purses and sensuous candles—but we’ll be back for them later.
Now if they only sold palm fronds and hotties….

Sweet Scent-sation
One of the nicest compliments you can pay a gal is that there’s just something about her—that certain je nais se quoi. Stars have it in spades—and we want some! And after discovering that stars like Madonna and Teri Hatcher are all die-hard devotees of LuLu Beauty perfumes, we think we’re on to their little secret.
These roll-on perfumes are hand-blended with 15–20 scents in each perfume, like gardenia, freesia and jasmine. Plus the packaging is oh-so-scrumptious. It’s our new secret weapon.

What’s In a Name?
We tend to get fanatic about certain things—things like cupcakes, Louboutin stilettos and skinny jeans. Another thing we’re fanatic about? “Gossip Girl.” (What of it?) So when we ran across this t-shirt from The Names Brand, we had to investigate further.
Their shirts are the perfect way to show some original and fun love for your favorite peeps, from Hanson and the Rat Pack to Full House and the Golden Girls. Our personal fave: Kelly, Dylan, Brandon and Brenda. Old-school “90210,” baby. Represent!

Put Some Pop Into It
We love a good theme party—the crazier and more original, the better. We could theme any get-together, and our next big thing is going to be dinner parties—with the help of PopMat recycled paper placemats from Publique.
Inspired by kids’ pop-up books, it’s a totally new and unique way to set your dinner table. We love the baby carriage for a baby-shower brunch, or the mailbox for a housewarming. So brilliant, we’re going to plan a party for each of the 15 different designs.

Cocktail of the Week! |

Honey Kiss from Sazerac
We go through phases where we will drink one cocktail exclusively until we just can’t take another sip. When we lived in Italy, it was a Tequila Sunrise, in college a Midori Sour, and of course, there was the Cosmo phase. This summer, we’re looking for something fruity and sweet to satisfy our cocktail cravings and we’re pretty sure the Honey Kiss from Sazerac is going to be the winner.
Honey Kiss
2 oz. Leblon Cachaca
3 medium strawberries, cut in half
½ lime, quartered
¾ oz. honey syrup
