June 12th, 2009
Last weekend we gathered for dinner and drinks with a bunch of friends and family at a local Mexican restaurant for a quiet evening of catching up. When we got up to place an order at the bar, we were approached by a man who was old enough to be our grandfather. He was at least 80—we kid you not. Reeking of alcohol, he politely inquired if we were married, and could he buy us a drink? HUH? We kept waiting for him to tell us about his handsome doctor grandson, but no, he proceeded to ask us out to go dancing at a Chinese restaurant down the street.
Was this really happening? We politely declined grandpa’s offer and booked it back to our table in shock. That was definitely the oldest guy to ever hit on us and we didn’t know whether to be flattered or totally grossed out. The thought did cross our minds that he could have been a millionaire and we just walked away from our sugar-daddy, but we’re okay with that. It’s better to be totally, oppressively single than twenty-something and dating an octogenarian.
p.s. If you aren’t laughing too hard to see the screen right now (or too weirded out to keep reading at the moment), get in on this: forward Seattle Picks to 5 or more friends and CC picks@SeattlePicks.com, and you could win a super-cute tote bag from Merin Designs (see below)! |

You Can Call Me Crazy
We adore boutique shopping (as if you didn’t already know that). Finding that one (okay, it’s usually more than one) unique, must-have piece is such a rush! What we don’t adore is an austere setting with three garments on the wall, snooty help and having to hock our first born to pay for a scarf. Thank Prada, we have found nirvana at Craze in West Seattle.
This tiny store (with happy, helpful owners) is filled to the brim with great style. We’re talking fun, modish, non-cookie-cutter pieces that are even affordable! In fact, you can walk away with an outfit or two and not feel your credit rating dip. Craze prides itself on being the purveyor of affordable fashion with a focus on quality. We fell in love with the Skunkfunk line—a hip and edgy, eco-friendly collection with fun and funky details like imaginative use of graphic screen prints, contrast top-stitching, and punchy, bold color. Craze also carries BCBG Generation (BCBG’s cute little sister), wonderful casual dresses by Bobi, and much, much more.
We’re crazy for cute new duds that won’t break the bank. We’re crazy for Craze!

Pilates Paradise
We just booked a ticket to the tropics, and awaiting us in paradise are the following: some sweet vitamin D, some pina colada action, and of course, our long-awaited swimsuit debut. We plan on showing off our fab vacation by uploading all of our pics to Facebook—our friends will be so jealous of our vacation and our hot bod.
Note: we didn’t get our tiny waistline easily—we got it at Belltown Pilates. Belltown Pilates offers one-on-one personal training and small (four or less) group mat classes to help us develop our core muscular strength—e.g. look hot. From post-acute rehabilitation and pregnant babes to the hardcore athletes, Pilates is accessible to all people and all levels of fitness. And thank goodness exercising doesn’t have to happen under fluorescent lights next to other sweaty people who don’t wipe down the equipment after they use it. (Yuck!) This spot is like a den of Zen with bamboo flooring, wooden-beam ceilings and tranquil plants to help you get your fitness on!
Hot, envy-inducing bikini? Check. Oversized straw hat and Jackie O sunglasses? Check. Tiny waistline and toned abs? Double check.

With Sizes For All
While we love trendy boutiques with unique styles, sometimes the styles look better on the hanger than they do on us. Hate that. You know what we’re talking about—it’s the very thing that keeps you from trying on the latest skinny jeans. No matter how hard we try, we may never be a size two, and we’re ok with that—we just wish all the designers would be too.
Happily, we found Pink Ginger. This trendy but unassuming treasure on Queen Anne is a girlie boutique that caters to all sizes. With pink-striped walls, local perfumes and lotions, plus adorably sweet—and slightly feisty—lingerie, this shop embraces women of all shapes and sizes. The hand-picked clothes range in size from 4 to 24, and their hats and bags will take you effortlessly from now all the way through fall. Vintage-inspired jewelry will have you sparkling in the sunshine, and some of the denim pieces can be found at other stores… for a whole lot more.
Now this is what we like to see.

A Sunny-Day Bag
It’s high time to start considering a beach bag, because you know we aren’t going to be carrying our precious designer handbags down to the shore to get filled with sand and bottles of leaking suntan lotion.
The solution is one of the super-cute but super-tough totes from Seattle-based Merin Designs. The bottom is waterproof to keep our stuff dry whether we’re on a boat at Seafair or people-watching at Golden Gardens, and it has all the right pockets for our stuff inside. Bring on the sunshine!

I Spy Something Sweet
Our obsession with cupcakes has, quite literally, become unhealthy, but we just can’t seem to quit these sweet little treats. We thought we had seen it all in the world of cupcakes, but then we stumbled upon Seattle’s Look Cupcake. Their cupcakes are filled.
Choose your cake, a filling (chocolate ganache or salted caramel anyone?), add the frosting of your choice, and enjoy. We love the lemon cake with strawberry crème filling and strawberry Swiss meringue buttercream—it’s summer in your hand!

The Cult of Cute
We have a weakness for all things miniature. When we see a mini version of something, we can’t help squealing like little girls—it’s completely ridiculous, but we seriously can’t help it—we love the cute.
So understandably, there was lots of squealing when we discovered Pretty Random Objects with their tiny ceramic animal vases. From the small heart vase to the petite bear-head vase and mini bunny sculpture, we want to display the whole cutesy collection on our windowsill.
