June 26th, 2009
We consider ourselves to be pretty brave and independent girls. We aren’t afraid to go see a movie alone or be fixed up on a blind date. We’ll even occasionally dine alone—in public! But a few nights ago, all our bravery went out the window in one swift moment.
We were parked comfortably on the couch when the closet doors across the room started to bang around. Hmmm. Mere moments later, a small rodent dashed across the room and under the very couch we were sitting on. Eeeew.
And here is the thing about rodents… even small is too big. We jumped up on that couch in a nano-second and screamed the girliest of all girly screams—it was like something out of a cartoon. We were so terrified, we had to send out for reinforcements—of the brave male variety. (We’ll kill our own spiders, but that’s our limit.)
The intruder was eventually caught, but it reminded us that even big girls need a hero to rescue them from the scary things in life sometimes… especially the things with tails. |

The Right Amount of “Wow”
Summertime means having fun with your clothes. Time to wear bright coral-pink shorts, long floral-print maxi-dresses and bejeweled sandals. However, lately we’ve been feeling like our wardrobe is a little bland—too many jean and khaki shorts and drapey black tops. You know what we’re talking about. Everything is cute, but nothing is “wow!”
So this week, it was off to Dolce Vita where almost everything has at least a little bit of that wow-factor we have been looking for. It’s one of those places that has everything a girl could want: shoes, bags, belts, scarves, edgy skirts and dresses to make any guy melt. The kind of place you wish was just your big, walk-in closet because you could take at least one of everything in the store. Because our pocket book has been a bit, um… light, lately, we couldn’t afford everything in the store, but we were able to pick up a few key pieces that will definitely help our lackluster wardrobe pop.
Needless to say, when we get out next bonus, we know where we’re heading.

Don’t Hold the Anchovies
Thanks to our friend, the economy, our annual summer vacation is a not-so-much this year. Instead of roaming the narrow streets of Naples and feasting casually on Mediterranean culinary delights on a charming outdoor patio under the stars, we are staying put and doing the summer vacay thing in Seattle. It’s ok… really… we’ve just had to search for those special spots that make us feel like we’re anywhere else but here.
Between the cozy sleek interior and the creatively adventurous menu at Anchovies and Olives, we’re relishing in the regality of Seattle’s own culinary scene and feeling far from home. Brought to us by the masterminds of Tavolata and How to Cook a Wolf, it’s a haven for the epicurious. Featuring primarily seafood dishes, both the crudos and plates are artistic and delicious; pairing buttery, melt-in-your-mouth-fluke fish with prosciutto; smooth scallops in watermelon broth; and seared prawns with freshly whipped parsley pesto.
Sipping on gin and Campari with an orange twist and dining on delectable delicacies ain’t bad for a girl with no reservations.

Rug Rats
Lately we’ve found ourselves surrounded by babies… and they’re not ours. (Whew!) Many of our relatives and besties either have a bun in the oven or a recently welcomed tot, and at first we were all, “Hey, don’t forget about us! We miss you! Do things really have to change?” But now we’re all, “Awwww, look at that adorable tiny jumper,” and “Oh my gosh! I just have to get those booties for them!” (Any reason to shop, right?)
It seems the enthusiasm is contagious, and as long as pregnancy is not contagious, we’re game. But when we recently headed over to our fave baby boutique for some local, sustainable fashions for le petit, we were surprised to see Twig’s doors were closed! Fear not—they’re opening an online store and it’ll offer the same sassy and precious pieces that withstand the test of time (and peas, carrots, apple sauce and Cheerios). Especially with modern organics from lines like Amenity, Babylegs and Kate Quinn Organics.
Twig’s online store will take care of all those rug rats and ankle-biters, so stay tuned to their site for updates on the eLaunch!

Beachy Beautiful
Every summer when the heat and humidity roll around, our naturally wavy hair starts to rebel and we start to day dream about ways to style our hair in a cute way that doesn’t involve a blow dryer. How does Gisele get those perfect beachy waves?
She probably has a gazillion-dollar stylist, but we discovered something just as good—Pacifica Salt Water Spray from sidlab. It gave us perfect, sexy, full bodied, just-spent-a-day-at-the-beach waves—the ideal summer hairstyle.

A Girl’s Best Friend
We’ve been good little recessionistas lately—we’ve even been perfecting our own pedicure skills and considering at-home highlights. (Luckily for our locks, it stopped at considering.)
We think all this good behavior deserves a sparkly little treat, and as much as we would like a big shiny sapphire from Tiffany, we haven’t been that good. Then we found the Diamond Dust necklace from Individual Icons. With 3 carats of industrial diamonds turned into what looks like fairy dust. Whimsical and sparkly, it’s our new best friend.

Bon Voyage
We love the old-fashioned idea of taking a summer holiday abroad, traveling across Europe by train, wearing elegant little traveling suits and writing in our leather-bound journal as the train speeds towards Venice. Of course, in our fantasy we also have chic matching luggage—that part of the fantasy we can afford.
We’re in love with Steamline Luggage’s Editor Series with the matching vanity case, carry-on and stowaway and neon pink piping—even if we’re only going to the family cabin this summer.
