life + style to you: every Friday
July 10th, 2009

One of our best friends used to say that she was going to peak at 30—that's when her life would really come together and be the best it's ever been. For us, 30 represented that the fun part of life was officially over—it's our "scary age" after all. You know, the age where you can no longer get away with things like mini-skirts, debauched nights out and “searching” for your true passion in life by regularly switching jobs.

Lately, though, the closer we get to 30, the more we’ve come to realize that it’s not that old. And although our twenties have been fun, free-spirited and exciting, they have also been turbulent and confusing. Maybe there is something to the fact that people always say they wouldn’t ever re-live their twenties, and that they are happier at 40 than ever before.

Light-bulb moment: 30 is no longer our scary age—in fact, we don’t have one—we’re living and loving every moment!

The Sweet Spot

All work and no play when it’s sunny and warm in Seattle makes us very grumpy girls. It also makes us crave a little somethin’ somethin’ to sweeten up the days behind the desk and hold us over till we can get out in the sun.

And what cures the blues quicker than brightly colored lollipops from Curio? These are not your doctor’s lollies—we’re talking sweet little hand-crafted numbers in flavors like tangerine, grapefruit and apple. Or perhaps house-made marshmallows flip your switch—Valrhona chocolate, Oreo, strawberry—the list goes on. Curio offers amazing baked treats (savory and sweet) and even wine and beer. What more could we ask for? On a recent visit we devoured a lovely savory quiche and some patés de fruit. But we couldn’t stop there—we snagged an assortment of the cutest tartlets we’ve ever seen. The French macaroons were wonderful too—a perfect blend of delightful filling and airy, chewy crunch. The menu changes daily as everything is handmade in small batches, so rest assured everything is fresh as a daisy.

Hot or cold, Curio hits the spot.

With Liberty for All

One of the things we love about Seattle’s “boroughs” is that you can just pick one on a whim, head over and get lost for an entire day. We love to pick a certain part of town and go where the wind (or rain, or sometimes sun) takes us. The back side of Capitol Hill is one of our faves. We love its more relaxed, family-neighborhood vibe, and the slow—almost Southern—pace at which everyone saunters down the sidewalks, admiring the little shops along the way.

One of our “must haves” of the area is Liberty Bar. Nestled away on 15th Avenue, Liberty focuses on their (many) well concocted libations, but also has an amazing spread of sushi to choose from. On our last trip to Liberty, we were celebrating our bestie’s new found singledom with a late night party of five BFFs for cocktails. We loved the French 75 for its whimsy, and the Lady Liberty (for obvious reasons). We stuffed our face with sushi, and don’t even remember what we ordered, to tell you the truth, but we do remember loving it!

What’s better than a summertime adventure in your own backyard?

Spanish Style

At last, the season of sun has come to Seattle! In celebration, we tossed our sweaters deep into the closet and threw on our flip flops. Newly clad, we wandered happily in the warm sun toward south Seattle’s Columbia City, in search of this season’s hot finds.

None to our surprise, we stumbled upon the sweet and inventively titled boutique, Andaluz. Named after the Andalusian region of Spain, it certainly adds an eclectic Castilian spice to our style and the décor of our apartment. We were stunned by the floor-to-ceiling pieces with which to decorate, clothe and entertain, and were especially impressed by the focus on local designers. The exotic quirkiness of colorful jewelry, intoxicating bath soaps and creative housewares were so fabulous that we were ready to start dancing the Andalusian Flamenco!
After spending countless hours pining over every little trinket we had to have, we found ourselves realizing one thing. Once you discover Andaluz, you'll find that you're ready to migrate south, rev up your spring wardrobe, and make it a regular twinkle in your decorative eye.

The Party’s Over

Fourth of July this year was totes fun—if perhaps a little indulgent. We weren’t expecting it to happen, but someone brought Sangria (our kryptonite), and by the end of the night, we were sleeping with one foot on the floor if you know what we mean.

A night like that calls for Shenui’s Hangover Pep Serum. Made fresh to order, it reduces puffiness, boosts skins oxygen content and is the perfect cocktail for our puffy dehydrated morning-after-skin. Dark sunglasses, and we’re ready to face the world again.

That’s A Wrap

When it comes to gifts, to us it’s not just the thought that counts, but also what said thoughtfulness is wrapped up in, so we always hit Kate’s Paperie for stylish outers that are as lust-worthy as the giveables themselves.

This lovely paper haven is loaded with the hippest selection of gift wrap, with punchy prints sporting everything from flowers to pop-culture references. They also offer a bevy of cool gift tags, albums, and other paper-oriented goodies, making them paper perfection!

Bright Sunshine-y Day

We’re having a definite yellow moment. To be honest, we never thought we could wear yellow; it’s one of those colors that scares us into wondering if we would be put on a worst-dressed list. Then we met the Canary Dress by Holly Stalder, and all reservations went out the window.

The Portland-based designer has created the perfect layered silk chiffon dress—her designs are so romantic and girly, and we have been searching everywhere for the perfect place to wear this dress—too much for work? Nah.

  Cocktail of the Week!

We take our hats off to all the bartenders across our fair city—how do they manage to keep coming up with such tasty new ideas for cocktails month after month? It’s genius, we tell you! Normally, it’s hard to get us to stray far from our Mojitos during the summer months, but the new Shiso Wild Drop at Pearl Bar and Dining has us thinking twice. Sounds to us like the perfect summer patio drink. Cheers!

Shiso Wild Drop

1 part Finlandia Wildberry Vodka
1 part Triple Sec
1 part House-made lemon sour
Muddled Shiso leaf
Huckleberry tea sugar rim

Rim the glass with the sugar, and shake the ingredients in a cocktail shaker. This creative cocktail is best enjoyed at Pearl Bar and Dining, but what the heck—now you can try your own version at home!
