  SEATTLE PICKS
life + style to you: every Friday
July 31, 2009

Last weekend, we prepared to send yet another bestie off into married life with a booty-shakin’ bachelorette party—and when we say booty-shakin’, we mean booty-shakin’. The first stop on the party train was the Divine Movement pole-dancing studio in Wallingford. That’s right—we learned how to shake our thang—stripper style. We rolled our hips, popped our booty, spun around the pole and even learned how to give our man a tasteful lap dance. It was fun, it was empowering, it made us feel sexy and strong—and holy cow, did we get a workout.

We have to admit that previously, we didn’t get the whole strip-tease-pole-dancing workout thing. And truthfully, we even thought putting one in your home was only for Kim Kardashian or Playboy bunnies. Now we’re planning on taking regular classes and wondering where we could put a pole in our new condo! We are seriously recommending that every woman try it once. Go ahead—bring sexy back!

p.s. The only thing we love more than our new workout routine is a cupcake. Forward this issue of Seattle Picks to 5 or more friends and CC picks@seattlepicks.com and you could be one of four people to win a dozen cupcakes from Cupcake Royale!!!

What’s Old Is New Again

The other day we were rifling through racks of old party gowns in Grandma’s attic, staring longingly at a peach-hued chiffon number, imagining ourselves at a cocktail party drinking a Tom Collins and listening to Sinatra. Ahh, the good old days—turn Grandma’s chic, vintage attic into a store, and we’d be there every day.

Turns out, it’s already been done—at Private Screening in Fremont. Complete with photos of 1950s luaus and Elks Lodge parties, and that musty smell that can make anyone nostalgic, it’s pretty much the attic/closet of a fabulous socialite grandmother. There are cowboy boots lining the shelves, and drawers filled with vintage magazines—this might be the best vintage store we have ever seen. It is virtually impossible to go to Private Screening without being sucked into a silver-screen fantasy—imagine yourself in a dance sequence with Fred Astaire, wearing glittering heels and some sort of filmy, swirly dressing gown.

So to all you rockabilly and retro-loving cats out there, drive your Vespa over to Private Screening for some crazy threads. It’ll really razz your berries. You dig it Daddy-O?

A Little Pick Me Up

Sometimes we all need a little pick-me-up. It’s true isn’t it? There are those days when everything seems to be going all wrong—from the very start. Thankfully, there are options for how to deal with such days. Go shopping, head to the spa, stop by the salon for a mani-pedi, and definitely hit the wine bar with your BFF.

But what if you need a little something right away? With the plethora of coffee shops in Seattle, we all have our favorites. One that we’ve been loving lately is way more than just a coffee shop. Serendipity is a café-restaurant-coffee-shop-gelato bar that has something for everyone. Whether you want a morning boost of caffeine with a homemade pastry, you’re looking for a tasty lunch, or need an afternoon shot of sweetness with some creamy gelato, you can place your order at the register or sit down for some personal service.

And of course, they have free wi-fi for those days when the office is just way too far away. We feel better already.

Spa La La La La

We’re not big on the deep house-cleaning. We are big on the complaining about the deep cleaning, dragging our feet to get it done, and then accidentally (on purpose) injuring ourselves 15 minutes into the first project.  Unfortunately, when we’re the only one around, and responsible for all the cleaning, there’s no one to complain to, and if we get hurt, we still have more cleaning to do when we’re healed.

So we stretched the “spring” cleaning into summer, and now that we’re at a self-proclaimed stopping point, we feel it’s time to reward ourselves with a much-deserved spa day.  We popped into Spa Blix for a few treatments fit for royalty, including the Blix Manicure/Pedicure Package with Paraffin Dip, a brow wax (to freshen up after having a sweaty forehead, natch) and the mandatory Revive in Twenty-Five massage.

Can we just say—totally worth it. Not that we’re feelin’ the need to do more cleaning anytime soon, but we will go back to Spa Blix to reminisce about what a great job we did this time around.

All Grown Up

Our birthday is still a couple of months away, but naturally, we’ve already started planning this year’s festivities. This time around, we’re feeling the idea of turning kid party ideas into adult fun (we promise, that’s not as dirty as it sounds).

The first thing on the list is one of the disco-ball inspired Confetti System piñatas. Filled with handmade confetti, it’s sparkly and girly, and we can’t wait to twirl under the falling confetti like the princesses that we are.

One of a Kind

We love things that are one-of-a-kind, because truth be told, we kinda love having something that everyone admires but no one else has. Is that wrong? If it is, then when it comes to Necklush, we don’t wanna be right.

Is it a scarf? A necklace? A cowl? It’s all of the above! This all-in-one design with multiple seamless loops and dozens of prints and color options makes for endless possibilities. It’s simple, modern and fashion-forward—we can’t wait to show ours off.

Sweet Simplicity

Life has seemed so complicated lately. It’s like everything is up in the air and no decision is easy—life has once again gotten messy. When times like this roll around, we look to other areas of our life where things can be simple and easy.

The jewelry from Anne Kiel is simple and clean, with unfettered modern lines, and made for everyday wear. In short, we love it. Especially the Waterlily necklace and Tiny Bird Ring. If only all things were this beautifully simple.

Yee-Haw

We’re pretty sure that “Das Barbecü” at ACT is the most entertaining show to hit the Seattle stage so far this year. This fast-paced comedic musical combines German myth and Texas twang (don’t forget the big hair and big hats) for showstoppers like an ode to guacamole and a song titled “Hog-Tie Your Man.” Guten Tag indeed!

We are so inspired by the Julie/Julia movie. We’re planning on hitting the farmers’ markets and a bookstore to begin our own summer of culinary adventure. Or better yet, we’ll just try some new restaurants. Feeling the same way? Sign up a friend at www.SeattlePicks.com and help us spread the Shop Local Love!
