August 14th, 2009
We’re moving. Again. And it’s not that we’re not excited, because we are—it’s more the fact that we’ve moved more than six times in the last four years. We’re beginning to think it must be some kind of mid-twenties rite of passage—you must move at least a gazillion times, and most of the places you live must be either a) way below your standards, so as to be laughable or cringe-worthy when you look back later in life, and/or b) have a ridiculously high rent that you can barely afford.
We honestly can’t remember the last time we lived somewhere for longer than a year. And truthfully, it wouldn’t be all that bad—if we could find some way to just subtract the whole packing-unpacking-moving-heavy-things part of the equation. Every time we begin to pack up yet again, we wonder where all this junk comes from. Just when you think you are almost done, somehow you manage to fill another 10 boxes.
We’re so over it, we may have to live in this new place for the rest of our lives. But hey, at least there is a fabulous new house-warming party to look forward to! |

Learning to Fly
We just made the purchase of a lifetime… a 1971 cherry red Cutlass convertible. And it would have been criminal not to roll around the Georgetown streets, surrounded by charming weathered-brick buildings, custom-car garages and vintage boutiques… the perfect backdrop. But soon we realized it was time to park the ride and do some shopping!
Frida on Airport Way is a mosaic of fun and funk, literally! When we walked into the store we were greeted by the toll of a cowbell, a French Bulldog who sleeps in an antique cupboard drawer, and treasures and trinkets galore. From a giant tile peacock statue to garden gnomes, Bettie Page lamps and glittery Day of the Dead traditional folk art carefully displayed around a vintage 1957 seafoam green Vespa centerpiece, this boutique is nostalgically romantic. Frida is all about unique and eccentric style, featuring local, independent designers like Lekkerlife, as well as Frankenscarf free-stitched scarves, Sam Trout silk screened T-shirts and recycled saddle-like leather purses from Chemical Wedding.
Like Frida Kahlo once asked, “Feet, what do I need you for when I have wings to fly?” Frida in Georgetown is where we get our wings.

You Scream, We Scream
It’s true, when it comes to ice-cream in the summer we turn into squealing little girls. You know those hot summer nights when strolling along the street with a sweet, cool treat is the only thing that will get you out of the house? Well, it’s still summer, and we plan on hitting every ice cream shop within a 20-mile radius—’tis the season, after all.
Cocoa & Cream is every girl’s ice-cream dream—and then some. You can smell the aroma of waffle cones from across the street and once you step inside you feel transported to a ’50s-era soda shop. With the hot pink and chocolate-colored interior we almost feel like we’re 12 years old again. But it gets even better… they serve truffles, chocolate fondue, hot “liquid” chocolate, and several teas that you can purchase by the pound to take home with you.
And because we can never really say “no” to ice cream, and let’s be honest, all that other good stuff, we’re thankful that Cocoa & Cream is open all year long. Cause you never know when a gal’s gonna need a treat!

Hide and Go Drink
All this recession talk (and walk) has seriously been bringing us down. Every time we want to go pick up a new pair of Choos, we realize that they’re at least half of next months’ rent, and since we took a hit at work, we just can’t afford those stylish expenses anymore. We get all sad-faced, and call our best besties to meet up for a cocktail to commiserate, and drown our Choo-lessness in a Cosmo. (Yes, we’re still drinking them. Never say die.)
The best little-known joint to sulk in downtown isn’t really even in downtown. It’s the Hideout, and it’s on First Hill. We know we can relax in luxury for a bit less at The Hideout, with its velvet drapes, dark moody atmosphere, Euro-centric art, and over-the-top chandeliers. It’s like they knew we were coming, and decorated it just for the occasion. We love us some of their spinach artichoke dip, and if we’re really low on fundage, we’ll hit up the happy hour for the drink special of the day and some Theo Chocolate.
Works every time!

A Fabulous Fake
Remember when fake bakes made you look like you’d been soaking in henna? (See: Tara Reid, circa 2002. We adore you, you crazy girl, but OMG.) Happily, times and technology have changed. You can even get organic tans—you read that right!
And we are loving Lavera’s organic self-T. With vegetable-derived DHA, organic soy extracts and jojoba oil, plus calendula, aloe vera and rose water for ultimate moisturizing, it’s guilt-free, streak-free and totally natural-looking. Take that, UV rays! And take that, henna!

Yes, We Have No Bananas
We love giving journals as gifts, but sometimes we get to thinking… how many virgin trees were cut down to make that adorable little notepad? Gulp! Suddenly our altruism feels a tad sinister.
But then we found banana paper. Made from totally sustainable banana leaves, a banana journal not only sounds cute, but is good for the planet. Next time you’re in the mood to journal (or give a gift), check out the banana paper options at Eco Paper.com. Good for you!

Sock It Up
When we saw Chloe Sevigny at Coachella rocking ankle socks with a pair of orthopedic grandma sandals and a frilly dress right out of our senior-class yearbook (circa 1993), we couldn’t resist trying the look for ourselves.
Now we’re totally obsessed with Hansel from Basel silk ankle socks—pairing them with our favorite summertime fashion staples. Hansel’s socks have the right amount of sass and coolness to complete Chloe’s look, and they look great paired with thrift-store oxfords, a boyfriend button-down and denim cut-offs.
