  SEATTLE PICKS
life + style to you: every Friday
September 11th, 2009

We overcame hell and high water to bring you Seattle Picks this week, dearest readers. Well, more specifically, we fought through the haze of meds prescribed for the mono that is currently sucking the life from our bones to bring you this issue.

And can we just say that we are probably the only people in the history of the world that gained weight when they had mono??! Unbelievable—the only thing to cheer us up was the thought that we might shrink a size or two—and without having to do any real work. But no such luck. We can thank the pudding, ice cream, popsicles, gelato and more that we sucked down in a vain attempt to numb our incredibly painfully oversized tonsils (too much info?) this week for that!

Who even gets mono at 28 during the summer anyway? We wish it was from kissing too many cute boys (that might have been worth it), but truthfully, we haven’t the slightest clue where we got it. It has disrupted our whole end-of-summer party schedule—and it’s not even over yet! Argh. Can you tell we have perfected the art of whining and complaining over the last week in mono-hell? Oh well, this too shall pass, and at least there is always Seattle Picks to cheer a girl up!

Summer Lives On

It was one of those days. You know, when you feel utterly alone with nothing exciting on the horizon. We often refer to it as the day-after-prom syndrome. Even though we love tall boots and wrap-around sweaters, we’re feeling nostalgic about the summer dresses and espadrilles that will be stuck in the back of our closet in coming months. We needed a little pick-me-up, but with our pocketbook a little low, we found ourselves lacking options.

Contemplating getting a good chocolate fix, we wandered past a beautiful little shop, and miraculously forgot about the chocolate fix. With just our first few toes inside Terra Bella Flowers, we felt better. The aroma of fresh flowers, perfumed lotions and scented candles was mesmerizing, and the antique-looking photo albums would be perfect for reliving our summer memories, and the flowers... oh the flowers. Cascades of blossoms in every color and shape. Terra Bella also makes amazing arrangements—for the day we eventually walk down the aisle. To top it all off, everything is organic and sustainable!

How could we not feel better?

Back to the Future

Picture this: It’s the height of the Gold Rush and the railroads and ports were the way of life for the pioneers of the West. Life was tough, so when the sun set and a hard day’s work was done, booze, babes and burlesque were the way of the night. These days, we have a lot more options for evening activities… but there’s definitely some charm to the days of yore.

Madame K’s in Ballard is about as close as you can get to feeling some authenticity of the late 1800’s, with delicious Italian cuisine to boot! Set in a cozy hole in the wall historic storefront (rumored to be a brothel back in the day), Madame K’s keeps the old era alive with paintings of bordello babes and fun and naughty adornments on the walls— think feather boas, bedposts and sequined cabaret garments and corsets (available for customers to wear!). And with vintage tunes in the backdrop and flickering candles, romance (and marinara sauce) is a-brewin’!

From their specialty pizzas and pastas to their “Chocolate Chip Orgasm” (especially meant for sharing), Madame K’s is really all about the decadence!

Shaken, Not Stirred

We have eclectic tastes. From art deco and Craftsman to traditional, modern and Victorian with a sprinkling of mid-century thrown in for color, we love it all. And don’t even get us started on eclectic home decor. Sure, decorating with quirky, timeless style sounds fabulous, but for some reason in our hands it ends up looking like a yard sale.

However, fear not, because we are newly inspired after visiting Lemon Drop Boutique. This little store is jam-packed with vintage (and new) finds, all artfully arranged in vignettes based on color, use, or just the whim of the day. We were so delighted that we took notes! On each visit you’ll find something new and fabulous for you or your home (new to you, at least). Our weakness is vintage glassware, and on our last visit we were happy to indulge. We picked up some precious cordial glasses, a sweet light-up martini sign, vintage linens, and even the perfect dress—so we’re all set to have a “Mad Men”-style cocktail party.

We’re thinking lemon drop martinis will definitely be on the menu.

Shark Week

We spy with our little eye something cute and evil. Dangerous by design, sneaky by nature. One of the world's most fearsome creatures.

The token bad boy that stole your heart? No. Tell him and his crotch rocket to ride off on a permanent vacay. We're talking sharks. Like this bejeweled gold number from Cheeky Monkey Jewelry, complete with a fair-trade ruby, sapphire or recycled diamond for an eye. We’re hoping it will fend off any incoming bottom-feeders.

Giddy As Schoolgirls

No matter how old we get, we’re always swept away by fall’s back-to-school shopping fervor, heartily embracing cool-weather trends with the zest and zeal of a 16-year-old hipster.

This year’s obsession? Eco-friendly basics with a hint of luxe style, like those we found at Nixxi. This Canadian retailer offers up a cool selection of stylish organic threads that are perfect for vamping up our fall wardrobe—while simultaneously pleasing our inner environmentalist.

Boogie Nights

We can’t help but notice the onset of the “natural hair” look everywhere, evocative of a 70’s, California-cool, sun goddess-like vibe. Frankly, we can’t appropriate it—our dishwater blonde is not anywhere near vintage Farrah Fawcett.

But we can go the groovy route in terms of silky, interesting garments from Snoozer Loser. It’s a strange and oddly beautiful online shop, with natural and comfortable-looking fashion. We may artificially enhance our ’do, but miss this sultry 70’s trend? Dream on!
