September 25th, 2009
We tried to resist it. We tried to hate it. But alas, we were sucked in, and now we are maybe, a tiny bit obsessed… with “The Rachel Zoe Project.”
Seriously, she has the coolest job—she spends her days shopping, handling Chanel couture, picking out clothes for movie stars, and playing with fashion—all while making beaucoup bucks. Is there anything better? We do happen to find her mildly annoying though—seriously, girl, eat a sandwich… or ten. But then we go shopping and find ourselves saying things like “I die” when we find that perfect leather jacket, or “A-MAY-ZING” when we slip on that 5-inch platform heel. Slightly embarrassing, yes, but we can’t help it, she’s slipped into our shopping subconscious completely undetected and we can’t get her out!

Sweetness and Light
We admit it: we’re obsessed with cupcakes and refuse to believe their moment in the sun is over! We’re not afraid to discuss our theory about how the miniature cake can enhance the quality of life (search “cupcake” in our archives for proof). So, we couldn’t have been happier when we headed across the lake and found a (fairly) new little bakery contributing to the cupcake craze—as well as offering gluten-free goodies to our more sensitive sweet-tooth ladies out there!
It’s hard not to use “cute” to describe the Sweet Cakes aesthetic, mainly because it’s all about the “C”: cakes, cookies, and cupcakes. We decided on the lemon bar, and we can vouch for the melt-in-your-mouth freshness that Sweet Cakes promises. Next time, we’re headed back for the gluten-free chocolate and cream cheese cupcake.
After we indulged, we noticed that Sweet Cakes also carries some thoughtful accessories to complement cake and cookies: A display of greeting cards and colorful paper plates make it one-stop-shopping if you’re headed to a party. Visit and help keep the cupcake dream alive!

No More Teacher’s Dirty Looks
The scent of freshly sharpened pencils, new backpacks and virgin Pee-Chees (soon to be doodled on). Yep, it’s back to school time and, surprisingly, we miss it! The excitement, the anxiety, the acne... hmmm, well not that last one. But really, we miss that stalwart harbinger of fall. Before we joined the working world, we always dreaded the start of school but now we know that the best part was the chance to redefine ourselves, and turn a fresh face to the world.
So we decided to force a new beginning with a new look courtesy of the totally Zen and mod Source Salon & Spa—and it was both refreshing and relaxing. First, we treated our tired skin to a nourishing body wrap followed by an anti-aging facial (we need all the help we can get). Then, since the sun and surf had really done a number on our hair, we put our raggedy, summer-ravaged locks in Lisa Pekar’s capable hands. A few deft snips (and a bit of color) later and we were ready to wow the cool kids.
Bring on the boots and corduroy—we’re ready for fall.

Simmer Down
We tend to be a little high strung. We try to blame it on our personality—this is just the way we were created—but as we start to approach our 30s, we realize we can’t keep using that excuse forever. We need to learn to chill out occasionally. We took yoga classes in college and enjoyed them but never really got what they were all about—we couldn’t quiet our minds long enough to stretch and relax on a non-skid mat.
When a friend suggested we try The Yoga Tree, we jumped at the chance—we are more mature now, after all. The Yoga Tree (in Fremont) offers a variety of classes (either drop-in or on a membership basis) that leave you feeling relaxed, refreshed and ready to face the world. We were amazed at how good it felt to just let go, breathe deep and let our worries and our muscles relax away. Plus, the instructors are super friendly and down-to-earth, and most of all, completely supportive of helping us calm down.
A few more classes and you may not even recognize us!

It’s The Little Things
We like to be surrounded by beautiful and stylish things. So when we ran across Full Circle Studios, handmade in the Seattle area, we were thrilled. They take the simple, seemingly mundane, everyday items—coasters, paperweights and switch plates—and make them stylish. Because truly, it’s the small things in life that deliver joy—especially when they’re this pretty.
In celebration of their tenth anniversary, Seattle Picks readers will receive 10% off their purchase—just enter “Seattle Picks” in the comments/notes section of the checkout page!

Tub Treats
We tend to have a pretty severe sweet tooth—cakes, pies, donuts, fudge. Too bad we don’t work in a bakery for the freebie—good for our waistline, though. We even love just the smell of baking goods (even if it does make us drool), so we indulge by way of Frilly Lilly Bundt Bath Cakes.
They dissolve in the tub, giving off the yummy aroma of Birthday Cake, Chocolate Fudge or even Strawberry Shortcake. Their whole line smells delicious and candy sweet—perhaps we also have a sweet nose?

These Boots Are Made for Walkin’
Summer is definitely our favorite season, but fall is a close second—simply for the clothes. Chunky sweaters, cozy coats, and the boots… oh, the boots! This year, thanks to the “R” word, there are no new boots in our closet, but we have found a way to make the old, new again.
The 2 Bandits dress up your boots with bands that slide over them—from embellished, metallic and Ikat print bands, to Native American-inspired designs and chains and jewels. It’s like a whole new world!
