  SEATTLE PICKS
life + style to you: every Friday
October 2nd, 2009

This week we finally got the chance to see "The September Issue," and it was everything we dreamed it would be. We’ve dreamed of working at "Vogue" forever – and it really only served to make us want to be a  staffer even more. Anna Wintour may be a little like Miranda Priestly a la "The Devil Wears Prada," but we’d do it anyway – and compliment her on the sunglasses she rocks day and night, indoors and out, and her fierce, unchanging Louis Brooks bob. She's a visionary and a genius – so if she’s a tad bit frosty, who cares?

And apparently, it really is as glamorous and we always dreamed it was. The bags, the shoes, the clothes, the designers, the models, Andre Leon Talley, Paris, London, Rome…we may have drooled in our popcorn…but only a little bit.

In short, run – don’t walk – to the theatre.

p.s. – Speaking of "Vogue," we know someone who should totally be included in the Fashion Bible – Amy Bengston. Forward this issue to 5 or more of your friends and CC picks@seattlepicks.com, and you could win this necklace from her new Pine collection.

Order Up

If you think about it, there’s not much difference between a traditional European, high-end delicatessen and swanky clothing boutique. They both sell fine goods, and we can’t really live without delicious food or fashion. Yes, fashion is that necessary.

Deli, the latest contemporary lifestyle clothing boutique to hit Pioneer Square, is where we get the best of both worlds. Deli features casual men and women’s clothing and accessories, including denim, T-shirts, pin-head hats and fedoras, watches, wallets, side satchels and skinny ties. And if the latest brand names like Penguin, Shades of Gray, and Green Apple Tree weren’t enough, Deli takes an artistic approach to their merchandising and display… kind of like a real delicatessen would… think T-shirts wrapped in waxed paper, satchels hanging from meat racks and hats and collared shirts in (un)refrigerated racks, looking good enough to eat!

For us, shopping always works up quite an appetite… but Deli makes us hungrier than ever!

KuKu for Popcorn

There are a few things that can only be described as American classics. Baseball games, Girl Scout cookies and James Dean, to name a few. Another American classic? Popcorn. And we’re not talking about Granny’s old-fashioned Jiffy Pop; we’re talking about gourmet, one of a kind, lick our lips to get the last morsel kind of popcorn.

Enter: KuKuRuZa. There are so many choices to choose from—we could have sat there drooling in our indecision for hours. Lucky for us they offer free samples, which did help out a bit… although we still could have eaten them all. We tried everything from Buffalo Wing and Blue Cheese to Cashew Carmel, and Butter and Sea Salt—even Natural Air-Popped. We finally settled on a favorite from the After 5 Collection, which includes flavors like Amaretto Almond, Burgundy Wine and Cheddar Cheese, and Irish Cream Liqueur with Espresso Cream (and yes, we’re still talking about popcorn).

So, this Friday night we will be having the Amaretto Almond, served straight up with a twist. In fact, we’ll make it a double (it has been a hard week, after all).

Perfect Vision

A lovely stroll through Ballard the other day left us seeing things very clearly. Perfectly, in fact. As much as we’d love to say we are referring to our eyesight, we are not; we are undoubtedly still blind as bats and have absolutely no depth perception. This clarity we speak of is not vision, but vintage.

20Twenty Vintage is a small storefront filled with retro goods primarily from the 1970’s and 80’s. Unlike many vintage shops filled to the brim with merchandise, this store is easy to navigate—you don’t have to have a black-belt in thrift shopping in order to leave with some good finds. They have a stellar selection of vintage boots (we happened to fall madly in love with a precious pair of pastel pink cowboy boots that reminded us of a pair we just had to have when we were kids). Along with clothes and accessories, 20Twenty also offers a collection of local art and vintage treasures, including our favorite childhood novelty, the Polaroid camera. They’ll even order the hard-to-find film for you.

Finally, thanks to 20Twenty, we can clearly see the vision that is vintage fashion.

We Heart Factory

"In the future everyone will be famous for 15 minutes."

Maybe so, Mr. Warhol. And if that should be true, we pray our 15 wasn't our 5th-grade spelling bee champ photo in the local paper but will be wearing one of I Love Factory's fabulous pieces to a beautiful bash. Composed of ribbons and lace, and lots of use of black and white, this Brooklyn duo's collection hit the masses via GG and will be seen at exclusive retailers. Edie would approve.

Fireside Luxuries

Sure, we may be jumping the gun, but every time we wake up at 6 a.m. to slam our windows closed because it’s cold and—let’s face it—pitch black outside, we know that summer has come to an end. Sigh.

We’re trying to ease the angst by planning for “cozy times” this winter. Thus our new obsession with luxurious blankets, and this cable-knit organic cotton throw from bambeco fits the bill perfectly. We can’t wait to cuddle up!

Pretty, Oh So Pretty

Why is jewelry so appealing? Is it the primal instinct to react to shiny things? The appreciation of artistry in such a delicate form? Or is it the need to find something to match that pink blouse? Eh, who cares when the choices are this good!

Kevia’s drop-dead gorge collection mixes precious and semi-precious stones in 18k gold, 22k gold vermeil and sterling silver. With prices starting at just $20, there’s something for everyone. Can you stand it?!?
