Remember that television show where they would put a hidden camera in people’s cars and see what they did while they drove around—completely unaware that they were being watched by thousands of viewers across the nation?
The other day, it occurred to us that this is our worst nightmare. We don’t really want to admit it, but since we’re all friends here… we were very loudly singing along with … Miley Cyrus’ “Party in the USA” … in our car. (Man, that song is catchy!) Yet if someone was secretly videotaping us? Mortified. Still, as a friend told us recently, ya gotta own it. Just don’t ever spy-cam us while we are busy owning it at the top of our lungs.
Anyhoo, really quick: We’re taking next week off for Thanksgiving. And just one more thing: Forward this issue of Seattle Picks to 5 or more of your friends and CC picks@seattlepicks.com, and you could win two tickets to Sister’s Christmas Catechism (see below) at ACT Theatre on Nov. 28! |

Field Day
When we were little girls, we may have watched Little House on the Prairie a little too often. But who can deny the absolute, unadulterated charm of the late 1800’s, with the frilly bell dresses, lace-up leather boots, paisley bonnets, and of course, Laura Ingalls’ braids? Or maybe you were more into Nelly and her ringlets?
We were probably born in the wrong generation, but at least we have Field House in Ballard to give us that feeling of western-rustic, old-world goodness. Field House is the sister store of the ever popular Blackbird. Featuring all kinds of fun randoms, this store is meant to emulate the old-timey, rural general stores, with cute odds and ends like candles, soaps, foods and seashells nestled in wooden barrels ready for scooping. But fear not, clothing and beauty addicts—Field House also has you covered with the classics like Pendleton, Woolrich Woolen Mills, April 77 and perfumes by Diptyque.
We may not be running through the wildflower fields, but we can still have our field day at Field House.

Sail Away
We find a certain romance in the changing of the leaves, the briskness of the wind, and the bite the cold has on the tip of our nose. We can’t quite place our finger on it, but it has something to do with our never-ending dream of being a native Parisian, circa 1960. We can’t stop drifting off, imagining ourselves at a canal-side café, sipping a morning cup, waiting for our Julia-esque omelette to appear via a sexy waiter.
No need to hop a 10-hour flight when we’ve got the Boat St. Café at our disposal! Indeed, they have the charm, ambiance (and of course, eggs to-die-for) that we’ve been dreaming of. And what’s more, no nasty second-hand smoke to ruin the aroma of the delicately crafted bechamel sauce that coats our favorite Benedict in town. (They also have the best crab cakes, fyi.) Nestled in the heart of the waterfront hustle and bustle, Boat St. has truly become an edible dream come true, fit for any Francophile this side of the Mississippi.
Breakfast, lunch and dinner? C’est vrai.

To Your Health
Recent research proves that wine is good for your heart and filled with antioxidants. As a result, we have decided that it’s time to get healthy and make a concerted effort to drink lots and lots of wine. So if we are going to do this right, we should expand our horizons a little and try some different varietals of “vitamins” from beyond the two-buck Chuck region.
This quest for health led us to find the local grape den, Fremont Wine Warehouse, where almost every bottle is $25 or less—far cheaper than at your average grocery store. There is a tasting every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 3–6 pm, but you don’t have to go to one to learn about your drink. The owner is as passionate about his collection as we are about our shoes, and believe us, that’s saying a lot. On our trip to the warehouse, we learned something quite valuable; wine sold there is meant to be drunk immediately. So by god, that is what we had to do.
Cheers!

Bon Voyage
That darned economy kept us from taking our dream vacation this year, but we are hopeful that in 2010 we will get to pack our bags and bid adieu to Seattle—at least for a week or two.
To keep the hope alive, we are going to bring some good energy into our life via the adorable passport covers from Bridget Davies. Hand-embroidered on silk with whimsical travel designs, we are sure we are going to need one soon. Any day now…

Who Loves Ya Baby?
Just when we were getting used to all of our friends getting married, all of a sudden, they all started getting knocked up. From bachelorette parties to baby showers, our heads are spinning, but at least we know what to get them.
The glass baby bottles from Wee Go are phthalate- and PVC-free, eco-friendly, and we love the modern design and brightly colored silicon sleeves (to keep the bottle from breaking, and making it easy to grip) that are perfect for tiny baby hands. You’re welcome.
