February 5th, 2010
We saw the disappearance of too many local boutiques last year, and we just don't think our little hearts can take anymore. We need our locals! We need the indie designers, the one-of-a-kind pieces, the hard-to-find lines, the cool jewelry designers who live in our neighborhood... things you can only find in independently owned shops.
So, ladies, this is a call to action—get out there and support your local small businesses. It’s the independents that make Seattle as great as it is—our city wouldn't be the same without them. They keep life interesting and unique, because after all, who wants to be exactly the same as every one else? So show them some love and tell them Seattle Picks sent ya! We know you can do it!
P.S. Speaking of great local boutiques and business owners, Jennifer Carroll of Bellefleur Lingerie has written a book, “Underneath it All,” that is absolutely fab. Forward this issue of Seattle Picks to 5 or more of your friends and CC picks@seattlepicks.com, and you could win a copy! Xoxo, darlings! |

Wrap it Up!
We thought that the gift-giving mania was behind us, at least for a month… or two. But then we remembered that our bestie’s bachelorette party is next week, our sister just got a promotion, and our nephew is turning 3. All of which deserve at least a little something to let them know we’re thinking of them.
Armed with a little time, and a remarkably empty wallet (ok, not so remarkable considering the amazing Via Spiga boots we bought last week), it only took 30 seconds to decide the perfect place to get everything we need—and maybe a little more. (Yes, we have a shopping problem. No, we don’t want help.) The aptly named “Gifted” is a quirky little shop with a little bit of everything, from the absurd and ridiculous (perfect for the bachelorette party) to handmade and sweet (for the 3-year-old), as well as stylish and trendy (for sis). This place has something for everyone. Literally.
Plus, with walls lined with hats, stationery, books, bags, toys, and more, we always find a treat for ourselves too. Naturally.

Scarlet Fever
Red… also known as scarlet, ginger, rouge, rose, ruby, blush, burgundy, cherry or brick. There are many great names for the color of power, courage and love, but our favorite is Crimson. Why? Probably because, well, you have to admit, it kinda rolls off the tongue all sexy and sassy like, but also because Crimson is Interbay's newest high-end hair salon that we heart forevs.
Crimson features cuts, color, styling, manicure and pedicure services, waxing, and our secret favorite, tanning (hey, it’s our dosage of endorphins during the nine straight months of unrelenting rain storms—give us a break, we only do it once in a blue moon). This salon offers a little bit of everything with amazing service, talent, and of course, a lot of style. After all, what says style better than a little leopard- and zebra-print furniture, loungie luxuries and drooping chandeliers throughout? Yummy.
Red is an important color… we sport it on our lips, nails, cheeks and hair. What better spot to go to than a salon named after the art itself?

Skipping Through the Meadow
Yesterday we heaved a big sigh because we still have a long stretch until summer. Since we always at least try to be the happy-go-lucky, glass-half-full type of girls, sometimes we need a good frolic to remind us that the sun is still shining somewhere… and the first place we’re going to see it is in the smile of the shop owner when we try to buy out her store.
Meadow Apparel, Gifts, & Home Décor is the perfect place for a winter frolic. The exquisitely lovely window displays beckon you in with their tasteful arrangement to find everything from purses and pillows to jewelry and datebooks. Plus, the soft and fuzzy sweater tunics by La Ciel are ah-may-zing. And just try to ignore the Valentine’s Day home décor. Hand towels adorned with animals in love and the Smudge Press cards are a sweet little way to show your affections, and the large pillar candles are dyed a vibrant hot pink to bring out some sass amidst all the sweetness.
Go ahead; take a frolic in the Meadow.

Hope for Rain
We have a love/hate relationship with Seattle’s rain. We love the coziness, hate the wetness. You know how it goes. But the love has grown since we found Hillary Day’s gorgeous (Portland-made) raincoats. Now, we’re truly hoping for rain.
Hillary uses a techy outdoor fabric to create super-stylish, ultra-feminine coats—pleats and fancy collars meet James Bond fabric. (Haute couture meets outdoor gear.) They’ll knock your socks off. (Just keep your Wellies on!)

Flip it Good
If a picture says a thousand words, what do 60 pictures in 7 seconds say? That’s math we can’t even do. And thankfully, we don’t hafta.
Fliptography makes you the star of your own momentary show—you can dance, do cartwheels, or just plain show off as the camera takes a series of 60 pictures. Mere seconds later, they are assembled (in order) into a flipbook that recreates your close-up again and again. How cute is that?
