life + style to you: every Friday
March 19th, 2010

We’ve fallen prey to the latest workout craze. It’s happened before—with Pilates, spinning, yoga—but this time around, it’s different. It’s Zumba, and we don’t care what anyone else thinks. We’re in love. Seriously, we can’t get enough, and we aren’t the type of girls that like working out—in fact, we hate it. But with Zumba, it’s a whole new ballgame. We actually can’t wait for class—the hour flies by in the blink of an eye and we forget we’re even working out because we’re having so much fun.

Yes, we look like total fools—we’re not too coordinated—but even if we’re messing up every step and butchering the Salsa, we’re burning those cupcake-calories right off our backsides. Doesn’t hurt that the instructor is a ridiculously hot Brazilian guy whose hips seem to move independently from his body. We’re not ashamed to say we watch him work it, and that in the end, that’s really what makes the moments fly, and this workout worth its weight in gold.

All Night Long

After a recent trip to NYC, we realized that Seattle doesn’t have enough all-night diners. Granted, we’ll hit the drive-thru with the best of ’em, but the idea of some more… shall we say… “gourmet” late-night grub, sounds like a lovely alternative… and kind of artistic, like we’re musicians or painters.

Enter The Night Kitchen, a new Belltown restaurant: 24-hour upscale comfort food, complete with a Late Night breakfast menu served 12:30 a.m.–4 a.m. (Cheese Grits with Red Eye Gravy are our new BFF). If you’re not in the mood for food and just want a place to study or gather, they also have a mural-filled Wi-Fi lounge inspired by the children’s book In the Night Kitchen. (One of our cool friends pointed this out. We had no idea.) We saw college students sipping espresso on flowered easy chairs in the lounge, while others (like us) were more focused on studying the menu in the café, feeling relieved that we no longer have to cram for exams.

Wait a minute. Did we leave our ID at that last bar? How embarrassing. Uh, hello? It’s college calling.

Burning Love

We’re always looking for something to light our fire. Preferably something strong, durable, generous, and full of character.  After the neighborhood firemen told us they were in the business of putting out fires, not getting them going, we had to move on.

For now, glassybaby will have to meet our fiery needs, and with a new location on the Eastside, we can continue to carry a torch. Glassybabys come in every color of the rainbow and then some. Handmade and made-to-last, you can find a glassybaby to match the changing of the seasons and the changing of your moods. The votives are aptly named “First Kiss,” “Seattle Sunset,” “Key Lime,” and “Jeffrey” (we’re getting up close and personal here) to inspire your emotions.  The “glassybaby of the month” club, where designers and art critics vote on their favorites and ship them directly to your home, is pretty brilliant too. There’s also a Seasonal Bouquet for that festive spirit of ours. They’re so pretty, we literally want one in every color.

So come on baby, light our fire.

Flavor Fusion

With a rainy Seattle spring on its way, we’ve been wishing we could hop on a plane and join a girlfriend in Phuket, Thailand, where she’s teaching this year. You know—sunny beaches, tropical nights and incredible flavors that dance on your tongue. (We so deserve it!) But then again, there is something to be said about spring in the northwest—the colors are amazing, and it’s a perfect chance to wear our cute Hunter wellies. If only there was a way we could have both…

Happiliy, there’s a new Thai place in town, and to make itself stand out in a neighborhood full of ethnic food, Thai Fusion is mixing the best of both worlds. The menu has traditional Thai favorites like Pad Thai and curry, but it also has the northwest staple Salmon, infused with Thai flavors. Genius! Plus, the décor is classically chic with hints of turquoise and orange bouncing off the white fixtures, and for Happy Hour you can enjoy several different types of meat skewers (chicken, beef, and pork) for $1 each.

So for now, we’ll just sip our Mandarin Ginger-Tini and picture ourselves on a hot sunny beach. In Seattle.

Rock On

Remember the Pet Rock? It just sat there, being a rock, and you were supposed to enjoy it. Huh. We didn’t get it. So we found another rock to brighten our day… one that’s more useful, colorful, and refreshing.

It’s the SoapRock from T.S. Pink. They are actual soaps with bright scents, and they “melt” away into colorful patterns as you use them. With whole-herb extracts and vitamins and minerals from aquatic, botanical and mineral sources, they’re even good for your skin.

Strike Anywhere

Have you ever suffered a major wardrobe malfunction? We have. And we went straight to the resale boutique post-work, barefoot, shoes in hand. No joke. It was that or sneakers, and those didn't go with our outfit.

Well, Matchsticks are just the kind of life-saving (er, wardrobe-saving) token we need on hand. Cute and compact, these booklets hold a stash of double-sided tape strips perfect for securing bra straps, repairing hems and hiding the infamous peek-a-boo blouse gap.

Olive Your Style

First there was Lucy and Ethel, then Wilma and Betty, and Rachel and Monica… and now, Olive and Myrtle.

This earth-friendly online boutique is meticulously stocked with things we love, like vibrant bamboo bowls, luxe organic sheets, and mod garden goods. They also carry Kobo candles (a longtime personal obsession) that are divinely aromatic and burn for freakin’ ever (70 hours!). The best part? This eco-chic purveyor is ultra-easy on the pocketbook.
