life + style to you: every Friday
April 2nd, 2010

We’ve been on a workout kick recently. Hey—a breakup will do that to you. All of a sudden you have to start dating again, so you gotta tone up, plus you have all this free time in the evenings that needs to be filled, and let’s not forget wanting to look so amazing that the fool who let you get away regrets it for life.

However, since kicking it up a notch in the workout department, we have developed some serious pet peeves when it comes to gym behavior. People who aren’t aware of their space in a workout class are Numero Uno. Seriously, hit us in the face one more time and we’re gonna start something. Also, to the showoffs in said workout classes? Do what everyone else is doing—don’t do a plank when everyone else is stretching out their hamstrings. And finally, please keep your loud workout noises to yourself—hearing you grunt and moan really doesn’t do it for us. Much obliged, and see you at spinning!

Bonjour, My Sweets

As much as we love Girl Scout cookie season, sometimes a packaged cookie just doesn’t do it. So predictable, always crunchy, and no aroma of fresh-baked goods to tease our senses. This year we’re going to skip the great American pastime of the Girl Scout cookie (don’t tell our sister’s kids!) and indulge in something fresh and French from Belle Pastry. And that means we get to feel all Euro-fabulous while we’re at it.

This little café is right on a great people-watching street in Bellevue, so we grabbed our cappuccino and a sweet little treat and settled in. It was a tough call between the classic croissant, the blueberry tartlet, the signature “Northwest” petit cake, and a tiramisu, but in the end we decided to do justice to the French and order the cream-filled chocolate éclair. Belle Pastry also offers sandwiches, soups, and gelato for the days we need a little more nourishment than caffeine and cream. Mmm, we’re thinking about going back right now.

Because not all carbs are created evil.

House of Love

Valentine’s Day came and went this year, and instead of the typical outing with our single gals, drinking pink champagne and celebrating our fabulousness and freedom, we enjoyed a night at home—drifting in and out of our stucco terrace, watching the sunset, reading a good book, and feeling really grateful for our beautiful life in Seattle. Okay, okay, we also shopped a bit. Okay, maybe a lot.

For our day of solitary celebration at our home—the soon-to-be sanctuary—we treated ourselves to a little household beauty, and made our home feel like our own personal West Coast haven at Liave in downtown. Think indoor and outdoor/patio table settings, contemporary wall art, candelabras and other natural, artisan crafted designs—perfect for the upcoming spring and summer days meant for relaxing and enjoying life. Each thing is unique but also functional—and we love things that are beautiful and useable. Double the fun!

Sometimes shopping really is the best medicine— and our beautifully decorated and stylish home seconds that sentiment!

Practice Being a Princess

When we were little, we loved having tea parties. We’d put on our pink tiara, set up a circle of chairs around our mini play table, and pour “tea” into the plastic pink cups. Sometimes a Cabbage Patch Kid or teddy bear would join us, and we’d sit and sip for hours.

Fast-forward a few decades, and we miss the relaxing indulgence of having afternoon tea with all our besties. It might be the arrival of the newest Alice in Wonderland flick (starring one of our faves—Johnny Depp), or it may be that with every birthday our childhood seems further and further away, but regardless, we had the urge for a tea party. And the only place to go is the Queen Mary Tea Room.  The flowers and wallpaper are oh so Victorian—perfectly girly. The desserts are decadently delicious, and the tea and the décor will make you feel like you’re practicing to be the Princess of England. Plus they sell all sorts of tea accessories, including tiaras, so you can pretend to be a princess any day.

Yep, we’re bringing the tea party back.

The Original Journey Pendant

We love to travel internationally. Well, we should say that we know we would love to one day. Until then, the Travel Channel, magazines and books will continue to whisk us away until we’ve stashed enough cash for that Med Cruise we’ve been dreaming about.

Perhaps that is what intrigues us about the gold-strand gems by Laura Stark, whose creations are inspired by museums, travels, and boxes of photographs, drawings, and images found in magazines. Youthful and worldly!

Lip-Smackin’ Latte Lurve

We really like drinking coffee, but our hypersensitivity to caffeine means we can only have half a cup, and before 10 am. Womp-womp.

Happily, Portland-based Andersen Soap Company takes our love of Morning Joe and makes it even more tempting with their luscious Café Latte lip balm. Made by hand with essential oils and coffee butter, it’s chemical-free and smells divine. It will love your lips… and it just might be “the best part of waking up.”

Fluff and Fold

We’ve got a long list of boozy tricks to make any party rock the hizzy. But when it comes to décor, we often get stuck after “setting the table.”

Prost to the Host to the rescue! They create absolutely adorable tissue-paper poms in an array of gorgeous colors—just fluff and hang to create a festive atmosphere for any occasion—weddings, birthdays, showers, New Year’s Eve. You can fold them up for easy storage/future use, but we might leave ours up permanently.
