  SEATTLE PICKS
life + style to you: every Friday
April 16, 2010

While shopping with a dear friend last weekend, we had a major realization about our taste and style. In store after store that we visited, we found ourselves drawn to anything sparkly, shiny, pink, baby blue, violet, and/or covered in or embellished with sequins or glitter. Apparently, our tastes never developed past childhood

Now, don’t go picturing us clad in nothing but pastel shades and sparkles—we don’t indulge in every pretty piece we see! But for some reason, we love the girly glam. Maybe when we’re 90 and don’t care anymore we’ll rock nothing but pink glitter, but for now, we know better. We’ll just sprinkle it here and there in our wardrobe, and of course, pick up a pair of the sequined shorts that are so in this spring. Hooray!

P.S. Pink sparkles aren’t the only thing we love—we also love dining out. Forward this email to 5 friends and CC picks@seattlepicks.com and you could receive a $100 gift certificate to the participating restaurant of your choice for Seattle Restaurant Week!

A Gorgeous View

We were hanging with a few of our most glamorous girlfriends, drinking Bloody Marys and enjoying our Saturday, when we just about died at the sight of a glittery purple octopus sitting atop the finger of one of our ladies. Don’t fret, it wasn’t a real octopus. It was a stunning purple Swarovski crystal octopus ring. As self-proclaimed professional shoppers, we had to know more about this ring and where she found it. “At Vu, of course,” she said. No no, not The Vu, but VU. Big difference. One sells clothes for fancy ladies, and the other has fancy ladies without clothes.

Vu, a Mecca of animal rings and fabulous vintage fashions on 13th and East Pine, is a little hidden treasure. There is definitely an 80’s feel to the pieces, but there are also a few 1950’s bombshells that cannot be ignored. Our favorite was the black and white polka dot Bill Blass reincarnation that sat in the front window. We died! Who doesn’t like sparkles, vintage and recycled/repurposed designer duds?

Go check out the view at Vu now! Then we can all be in on the secret!

A Little Somethin’ Somethin’

Last Sunday afternoon we were feeling quite proud of ourselves. We’d cleaned our apartment, walked the dog, hit the Farmers Market and even squeezed in a run around Greenlake. But looking around our neat and tidy apartment, we felt it was lacking something to make it just a little more chic. It’s nothing we could put our finger on—not a big investment like a couch or new coffee table. But it just needed some charm to round it out… or maybe we just needed an excuse to shop.

So where does one go for a thingamabob, whirly gig or other such necessity? We headed to Furnishments in Greenlake; a consignment store that’s filled with all kinds of objects beautiful, curious and quirky. We contemplated four vintage champagne glasses or a curlicue brass lamp, but finally settled on curvy brilliant-blue enamel vase. We can already picture it bursting with daffodils or tulips on our kitchen counter. Pretty sure we’ll be back regularly to find more treats to perk up the pad.

But for now, we’re off to find some flowers for our new vase.

Goody Two Shoes

When we were little, weekends were always filled with some sort of sweet treat for "behaving" all week long. As much as we'd like to say we're still "behaving," that is not always the case (e.g.. not making a complete stop at that stop sign, keeping that $20 bill we found on the sidewalk, "borrowing" that box of pens from work... you get the idea). All that aside, it's perfectly acceptable to treat yourself now and then, and that is just what we did this weekend.

Strolling down 65th, off Roosevelt, we stumbled on our newest favorite sweet-treat location: Peaks. They serve the most amazing, most delicious, most rewarding indulgence for those of us out there "behaving": frozen custard! Denser than your standard ice cream, custard is made with eggs, and it contains less air, and did we mention that it’s really good? Picking just one item was a challenge, so we had two. (They have quite the selection—from custard affogato and sundaes to Italian sodas and root beer floats.)

Treat yourself; surely you've done something good today.

Make a Statement

We’re not gonna lie—we totally rocked all those t-shirts with dorky phrases on them, circa 2004. In fact, we loved them.

And now we can make a new statement and extol our love of books (with classic literature cutely emblazoned on our chests) thanks to Out of Print Clothing. But most importantly, we can make a difference—each shirt purchased sends a book to a community in need, through Books to Africa. “On the Road,” indeed.

The Wow Factor

We’ve always dreamt of designing shoes, but for our tootsies only. Our creations would have a touch of the unexpected—studs, ribbons, vintage patterns, an unexpected heel, and everyone would be envious.

Cue the dramatic music—we’ve found the way to make our dreams come true and boost our unique collection without mastering craftsmanship. Eidia Lush customized shoes, from classic to exotic styles, will definitely be the exclamation at the end of your outfit!

Top Model

One tiny little thorn in every wedding planner’s side is finding the right cake topper. Have you seen the cheap, cheesy, plastic pieces out there? This is forever we’re talking about here!

You deserve a clay couple that embodies the two of you. Does your hubby love to bust a move, but you’re more of a wallflower? Happily, the magic molder behind these toppers can capture just that. But book now—orders through summer are filling up fast!
