life + style to you: every Friday
April 23, 2010

We recently realized that we are getting too old to do some things. We came to this realization last weekend after a Girls’ Night Out which involved lots of dancing—and lots of Mojitos. We had to be up early the next morning, and it was not pleasant. We just don’t bounce back the way we used to—we were still dragging two days later.

So it was time to draft a list of things we are definitely too old to do anymore… or at least, very often. We can’t cut it all out—we have to stay young at heart, after all— but included on the list of things we are “too old” for are: drinking and dancing until the wee hours of the morning when we have to be somewhere before 9 a.m., doing laundry at our parents’ place, not using eye cream, and spending grocery money on new shoes. … Okay, we lied about the last item. We may never outgrow that one.

Home City Home

We may have made a wee little mistake with our budgeting recently. We may or may not have accidentally blown our paychecks on some glorious little Chanel pumps that we just could not live without. Sadly, we forgot to look at the calendar and notice the part where it says “rent is due soon.” Oops. So we may or may not have a place to live as of next week.

But then we wandered into City Home, and decided to rethink next month’s spending. So many delicious treasures! And what’s ultra fantastic about the pieces in City Home is that you can actually fit them all into your city home—no matter how tiny it is. They specialize in small-scale furniture and unusual ways to create a chic environment without stuffing your casa with gigantic couches and dressers that are bigger than your bathroom. We personally crave the super-mod mirrors, the black and white paisley tapestry throw pillows, and the clear plastic dining-room chairs.

They even have a pretty amazing sale section. This, friends, is our new home.

The Most Delicious “Thank You”

We love when mom comes for a visit. She’s been to Seattle enough times that she doesn’t need the whole Pike Place/Space Needle circuit we normally take out-of-towners on. Instead, she’d rather cozy up on the couch and gab, or even help organize our cavernous closet. Ahh, the perfect out-of-town guest.

As our way of saying thanks for that closet re-org, we took her to lunch at Crepe Café and Wine Bar. Their atmosphere is very French without being snobby. We couldn’t make up our mind between a sweet or savory crepe, so we ordered both and split them. That’s the European way, right? Just order smaller portions of whatever you want. Right in front of us, we watched them transform batter on the counter grill into light fluffy crepes filled with asparagus, ham, swiss cheese and bechamel. The Nutella Banana crepe was sweet and gooey and a little bit brown on the outside. Ohhh, goodness.

Pretty sure we might have had a chocolate mustache right at that moment, but we didn’t care. Mom was there to clean it up.

Totally BFFs

We have noticed that the Eastside is now chock-full of shops carrying high-end designers, which is rock-star awesome for window shopping. We have no reservations about blowing one whole paycheck shopping, but we’re pretty sure spending two of them would cause our landlord to get a wee bit angry. And that’s just going to take up our precious shopping time.

But we’ve discovered the pot of gold at the end of this Jimmy Choo-lined rainbow: all those new designer goodies entering someone’s closet are pushing other things out, and those beautiful, gently used items are ending up in consignment shops right next door! Between Friends is the best of these, sandwiched between the freeway and the new mall in Bellevue. (So convenient!) Right now this place is overflowing with Kate Spade shoes, Michael Kors handbags, and lovely trench coats. Plus, Between Friends is designed to keep the merch moving—there are time limits on how long items can stay full-priced, so every visit promises something sparkling new.

Let’s keep this between us, k?

It’s a Dog’s World

We wuv our witto-bitty tail-wagging Chihuahua, Chino. From our picture-snapping obsession to creating custom pet ID tags, we love showing off our four-legged BFF to family and friends.

Of course, being our pet, Chino has a flair for good design. We know because she prefers nibbling on heels over flip-flops, and our chenille sofa to her doggy bed. We also know she’d love Mod Dog modern dog prints and note cards—perfect for the posh pet-lover!

Dish it Up!

With spring finally beginning to show its face in Seattle, we are craving bright, pretty colors to bring joy and color into our lives after months of gray, gray, and yes, more gray.

So when we found these dishes by Atelier BB, we were sold. We’re swooning over the vivid colors in every shade of the rainbow, and how thick and textured they are. Maybe, just maybe, the bright orange bowl will help us perk up while having breakfast on an early morning.

Hanging by a Thread

Any regular reader of Seattle Picks knows of our obsession with all things pretty, sparkly and shiny… especially when it comes to jewelry. We have a weakness for baubles, and we aren’t ashamed to admit it.

Our latest jewelry crush is on the Thread pieces from Asha Patel Designs. These East-meets-West pendants feature nine aura-centered designs on different colored cords. From Hamsa for peace, protection and happiness to Clover for good luck, we want one for each day of the week.
