life + style to you: every Friday

We’ve fallen hard for the girl-crush recently. Totally non-romantic, a “girl crush” is a total love of a—usually—famous lady and her style, her wardrobe, her look, her general awesomeness. We’re pretty sure you know what we’re talking about—we all have girl crushes.

For example, Zooey Deschanel. Is there anything cuter than this little pixie and her retro chic style? Also, we have a major crush on Blake Lively—the girl’s wardrobe gives us chills just thinking about it, and that hair! We dream of hair like that! Then there is the old favorite, Sarah Jessica Parker. Sex and the City, need we say more? We developed a new girl crush just the other day in fact, after attending the James Taylor-Carole King concert. We never knew we loved Carole King so much! She rocked that show and totally stole the show from JT—well into her sixties, she was amazing.

Clearly, we don’t have one type—we just have love and admiration for all of the strong, fabulous, talented and beautiful ladies out there! … Who’s your girl crush?

London, Paris, Tokyo

The other day we looked up the word “cosmopolitan” and realized it involved “international sophistication” on top of looking, feeling, and living our very best. Who knew? Since we think that we’re already the epitome of “sophisticated,” we knew we’d better get prepared for the international part of that equation. And then, darling, we will be the living and breathing “cosmopolitan”—with a capital “C.”

While waiting for our passport (the government takes forever!), we stopped by Wide World Books and Maps. It is the ultimate one-stop-shop for everything we need for our next trip. We grabbed a guidebook to learn the ins and outs of every culture, a map to hang on our walls for inspiration, a city guide to find all the hotspots, and some fabulous luggage tags, because honestly, our bags need to look as good as we do. (Especially if they end up in the hands of a man with a delicious foreign accent.) Our final impulse buy was a pack of “mapkins”—we couldn’t resist the amusement!

Two tickets to paradise, please.

Come On In

After years of living on hand-me-downs, and we mean literally living on hand-me-downs, we’ve got just enough money in the bank to pick out some of our own furniture. Which means, one thing—shopping!

As you may have guessed, most of our income goes to shoes, bags, and drinks on the town—a girl’s got to live it up, right? But, after tucking a bit away for the past few years, we’re ready to shell over some cold hard cash for a nice place to relax our behinds and lift up our pretty little feet—properly pedicured, of course. So off we went to Diggs and Dwellings, one of the best places around to buy furniture.

Not only is their stuff stylish in every possible way, but it’s custom made, so we can pick out the perfect color, fabric and shape… all for a fantastic price. We love their modern yet comfy designs, and we had just enough money left over to pick up a few eye-popping throw pillows… and maybe that new pair of espadrilles we’ve been eyeing downtown.

You Spin Me Right Round

When we were in junior high, we were obsessed with the movie Empire Records. We watched it weekly and were intent on emulating Liv Tyler’s character in her plaid skirts, belly-baring angora sweaters and combat boots…. complete with teen angst. The only problem was that we didn’t have a way cool record store to work in with all the artsy kids and major drama.

But last weekend we found Georgetown Records: vinyl heaven. As we flipped through record after record we were transported back to our adolescent obsession, and wouldn’t have been shocked if the Gin Blossoms started playing on the speakers or if our girlfriends felt compelled to launch into their own version of Sugar High. Georgetown Records is filled not only with a huge assortment of killer music, but also an amazing collection of comic books. We wouldn’t consider ourselves connoisseurs by any means, but that being said, their collection is artistically amazing, unusual, and light years from superhero stories.

So go—get your hands on some vinyl, and remember that music comes in forms other than a download.

Love Your Veggies

Vegetables aren't just healthy, but beautiful too. The different colors and textures—vegetables are a world unto themselves. Plus, we totally need to eat more of them. Maybe the adorable prints from Chavah’s Garden will inspire us to do so.

Her hand-painted vegetable portraits come as greeting cards, small posters and small original paintings—all celebrating the quirkiness of vegetable beauty. We’re already planning where to hang ours in the kitchen.

A Heartfelt Reminder

We want to talk to our mom every day—she’s hilarious, and her social life is better than ours. Mainly because she can afford to go out to dinner four nights a week.

But some folks don’t have that yen to bond with mama on a regular basis, so for them, we suggest this pillow that declares boldly: “Call Your Mother.” Handmade from 100% post-consumer recycled water bottles, it’s good for family harmony, and good for Mother Earth.

Swap ‘Til You Drop

After a spring-cleaning of our closet, we realized we’ve got some decent stuff to pass on. We may be done wearing some items, but they still deserve a little recycled respect.

Refashioner wants your outfit mistakes, too-valuable-to-give-aways, and one-wear wonders. Trade them with fellow style fiends by posting your pieces to the online closet and spending their value on other people’s stuff. Save cash, guilt, and the planet. Simply brilliant!
