  SEATTLE PICKS
life + style to you: every Friday
May 28, 2010

You know what’s not fair? Getting sick in spring or summer. We’ve been deathly ill since last Friday, and we are fed up. Okay, we may be a little dramatic right now—of course we aren’t deathly ill, but this cold is definitely putting a damper on our social lives. Getting sick during nice weather in Seattle is just totally unfair.

How unfair is it? It’s unfair like getting a free pair of shoes and finding out they are the wrong size is unfair. Unfair like not losing ten pounds when you have mono and you can’t even eat. Unfair like when some other girl gets to cash in on all the hard work you did on your ex-boyfriend to make him more dateable. … As you can see, we get grumbly and grumpy when we are sick—and it just doesn’t jive with sunshine in Seattle. It’s time to get over this cold (and the ex, apparently), and move on!

A Little of This, A Little of That

It’s no secret that we pride ourselves on the being the shopping connoisseurs of the Pacific Northwest. From Vancouver to Portland, we like to think we’ve seen it all, and are the best folks to tell you about it. And that’s why we’re here to tell you about the new blink-and-you’ll-miss-it gem in Ballard.

“Also” is a tiny shop and its hours are limited, so we have to give a giant thank-you to the shopping goddesses for letting us in on this secret. Hidden behind a delightful Secret Garden-esque wrought-iron gate, Also is filled with vintage and eclectic pieces. Dozens of greeting cards welcomed us in, and each one was far too pretty to ever give away. We’d rather save them and frame them as art pieces—ferreals. We also found a wonderfully varied assortment of goods for the house here at Also, along with some lovely little paintings we would die for, and a few other curious pieces that piqued our interest.

We’re happy to spread the news about Also, because shopping is never just an afterthought for us.

Spicing Things Up

Have you noticed? The sun has made an appearance! We’re praying it stays around for the next several months—on a regular basis. (We’re totally Sun Bunnies.) Sure, we’ve heard it all before—sun- and heat-loving folks like us probably shouldn’t live in Seattle, but for now, we’re staying put and frolicking in the glorious solar rays as much as we can.

And sometimes when the sun’s out, there’s nothing we want more than a nice, tangy, icy margarita—and of course some Mexican food to go with it. And right here in Seattle we have a new favorite place to calm our cravings. Laredos Grill is a tasty tex-mex place that has something for everyone. The warmly colored walls welcome you in, and the authentic food can keep you here for hours. We recommend the Tacos al Pastor and the Pollo Laredo, and one of these days, we’re taking our boyfriend back to try the Carne Asada Fries.

We predict it’s going to be the place to go for a margarita in Seattle this summer. Rain or shine.

Hot Hair? It’s What I Got

Sub-lime: divine, heavenly, awe-inspiring, supreme, outstanding, grand, magnificent, majestic, superb…  Now those are some words we like to hear when we walk out of a salon with a fresh new look, right? And we know we’ll get that reaction when we strut out of Sublime Salon in Belltown, thankyouverymuch!

Sublime Salon is all about contemporary styling and coloring techniques, featuring services like cuts, color, foils, scalp treatments, and even extensions.  And it doesn’t hurt that you’ll get your ’do did in what feels like a modern New York City art gallery, with high ceilings, hanging bubble lamps, minimalist devcor and sleek bamboo flooring. The chic surroundings kinda make us feel like we’re the art collection on display, and we love that!

Bottom line? We don’t need a thesaurus to help us describe the awesomeness of our hair (and attitude) when it’s freshly styled from the salon, ’cause all we need is one word: sublime.

If I Had a Hammer

We’ve noticed lately that every piece of jewelry that ends up on our must-own list has one thing in common—hammered metals.

While some metal jewelry can appear too harsh, shiny or mod, hammered metals are subtly edgy and much more organic in feel. Right now we’re loving sterling silver cuffs. Loose Wire Studio, based out of Minneapolis, achieves perfectly distressed and brushed metal pendants, cuffs and earrings.

Queen of Hearts

We don’t do a lot of shopping across the pond—even online—but sometimes an item comes along that’s worth international shipping. And we’ve found the most uh-dor-able heartfelt gifts from a British artist.

Veronica Pollard cuts out tiny hearts and arranges them in a box frame, and each artful creation is personalized with initials or images. We’re thinking buying one is a must-do for the next couple that says “I Do!”

Dashing Heels

Confession: Keeping up With the Kardashians keeps us glued to the tube. We have a thing for big-family reality shows, but this one has more drama and better-looking people than most, making it easily addictive.

So we were very interested to hear that Kim K. is behind a new personal shopping site that surveys you on shoe style and matches you to pairs that you can rent. Think Bag, Borrow or Steal for your tootsies!
